Here is our Wix review summary – To help you evaluate whether Wix is a good website builder for you:
|1) Introduction to Wix||
Based on our review of Wix, Wix is one of the best drag & drop website builders in website building world today.
Why? They’re easy to use, have beautiful designs, and you don’t actually need to know how to code!
You just have to look at some of these example websites here to see that Wix gives you the ability to create beautiful and professional websites.
Wix currently has over 92 million registered users, and more than 2.29 million subscribers have upgraded to their monthly paid plans. This demonstrates that a lot of people have “voted with their wallets”, so to speak. Here are some stories from Wix users which will show you what they’ve built and how their websites have helped them.
Of course, you should always test out their website builder on your own to see if you like using their services or not. You can test them out for free, for an unlimited amount of time without any pressure of upgrading.
|2) What We Like About Wix||
Here is a couple of things that we think Wix does way better than its competitors:
1) Wix is a much more innovative website builder than other drag & drop website builders.
Wix has a steady history of adding new features and designs. This is good for you, as the last thing you want is a website builder that is stagnant and doesn’t keep on trend. You can see a list of their monthly tools / features additions here.
2) Wix’s designs are up-to-date with the latest design trends.
Have you seen trendy websites that showcase 1-pager parallax designs? Video backgrounds? Multiple, distinct sections on a page? You would think creating these designs require you to be a code guru, or that you’d need to hire an expensive coder.
Wix actually empowers you to create these designs without coding at all. You can see them in action here.
If you had a chance to try other website builders, you’ll quickly see that they just don’t offer these sort of design flexibility to you.
That’s why Wix is a good option for you if you want to work with a website builder that is continuous growing and investing in its platform. Ultimately, it is the users that will benefit.
|3) Things You Should Be Aware Of||
As much as Wix is a solid website builder, there are a couple of things you should be aware of:
1) After you pick a design template, you can’t easily change it.
This limitation can be a bit annoying. To be clear, Wix doesn’t lock you into one single design. You can change to a new template, but your existing content will not automatically flow into the new template. You will have to manually re-insert your text, images, etc, into the new template you pick.
2) Visible advertisements if you are using the free Wix plan.
If you decide not to upgrade to one of Wix’s premium, paid plans, you can still continue to use their website builder and you can still publish a live website. However, your website will display a very prominent advertisement, and you cannot use your own custom domain name. Your domain name will be an extension of Wix, so people will know you are using Wix.
It’s understandable that Wix will prominently display their brand on websites built with their free plan. So to remove these ads, you’ll need to upgrade to at least their “Combo” plan.
We have more Wix pricing discussions below.
|4) Is Wix Ideal For You?||
If you’re not a technical person or don’t know how to code, Wix can be a good website builder for you to test out.
They’re easy to use (drag & drop user interface), easy on the budget (you no longer need to hire professionals to help) and you don’t have to wait days or weeks to publish your website (as you would if you had to hire someone).
Further, they have an extensive collection of professionally designed templates that cover a broad range of industries, such as:
So Wix’s coverage is really broad and there is a good chance you will find the right design template that will meet your design needs (more discussions about design templates below).
|5) Ease of Use||
Wix’s drag & drop tools are designed to help non-technical people build professional looking websites.
Once you sign up with just your email address and pick a design template, you can start adding content and dragging them around your webpages with your mouse. That’s all.
There is no coding involved, and you don’t have to hire anyone to help you. You no longer have to build websites the “old” way – by hiring a designer and coder and pay them a lot of money to build a website for you, while you sit around and wait.
There are also no technical moving parts for you to manage. Unlike more advanced platforms such as WordPress, all the technical aspects of building websites (such as managing your hosting / servers) are handled for you by Wix.
With Wix, it’s quite possible that you can sign up in the morning, and have a very good working draft of your website published by the end of the day.
|6) Wix Template Options||
Wix offers you over 500 design templates that you can choose from. They’re stylish and professional looking, and as mentioned, they cover a very broad range of industries so you have a good chance of finding something you like.
Wix’s templates are quite updated and on trend. Combined with their innovative drag & drop tools, you can create a fantastic looking website even if you are not technical or if you’re not born with natural design skills.
One thing we really like about Wix’s templates is that they come pre-populated with sample content. So you just replace their content with your own and your webpages are almost there. There is nothing more frustrating than staring at a blank webpage, not knowing how to layout your content. Wix takes care of this for you.
If you’re a bit adventurous and want to start with a blank canvas, they also offer you this option. You can design and populate content on a blank page, however you want to.
As mentioned above, one of the drawbacks of using Wix is that it is not easy to switch designs. Once you pick a template and use it, if you want to switch to another design, you’ll have to re-insert your content. It’s a bit of a bummer, so make sure you invest a bit more time into selecting the right design for your website!
Overall, Wix offers you a good collection of design templates. In combination with their tools, that’s a pretty good website building combo!
|7) Wix Support & Resources||
When you’re building your website with Wix, you can get help in a few different ways:
If you want to call them, Wix’s support team is available between 9am and 8pm EST (6am and 5pm PST). If it gets a bit too busy, you can schedule a time and they will call you back.
Note: If you sign up to their VIP plan, you get direct access to their VIP Support Team.
One thing about their Help Center is that they have an immense amount of tutorials in there, in both text and video formats. Their guides are excellent (step-by-step walk through’s).
Further, they make their tutorials very accessible when you are building your website. They strategically place help buttons on all their website building functions, so you can just get help “on the spot”, instead of opening up another window to load their help guides(which you can also do, if you want to).
Websites built with Wix are mobile friendly, but they are not mobile responsive.
They offer you a dedicated mobile editorwhich will enable you to edit your mobile site on a standalone basis. You can re-arrange your content, or even hide content on your mobile webpages.
This comes in quite handy when you are shrinking a website from a typical desktop view (large viewing monitors), down to a compressed, mobile screen. You can hide content that is not critical, and only display content that is important on the mobile version of your website.
What this means is that the mobile version of your website can be slightly different than the desktop version of your website. As such, you can create a unique mobile experience for your visitors.
|9) App Market||
Another thing that makes Wix stand out from other drag & drop website builders, is that they have an App Market where you can“bolt on” more advanced tools to grow your website.
Just to clarify, these apps are additional tools on top of the existing set of tools that Wix gives you.
Some of these apps are created by external (non-Wix) developers, so they give you more options and flexibility to supercharge your website when you are ready to do so.
Note that most website builders will not offer you apps. So this is something we quite like about Wix.
You can check out their App Market here, just to take a peek to see if you can find something you just might use down the road.
|10) Wix SEO||
When it comes to being discoverable by search engines such as Google, Wix has all the basics SEO tools covered (click here to see Wix’s full SEO guide).
Wix websites are search engine friendly, and are actually highlighted in Google’s own Webmaster Guidelines, under the “Help Google Understand Your Pages” section (right next to WordPress).
This suggests that Google recognizes Wix as a legit website builder, and can read and understand Wix websites.
John Mueller of Google also addressed a commonly asked question in Google Webmaster Central Help Forum, asking whether Google dislikes Wix when it comes to SEO and if websites built with Wix do not rank well in search results.
Google was pretty explicit in saying that websites built with Wix rank just fine in Google search results, and that Google does not favor any specific website building platforms especially there are a lot of discussions claiming WordPress is a favored website builder.
Further, Wix enables you to customize your webpage addresses which is something most other drag & drop website builders don’t offer you.
What this means is that you can alter your page address URL to whatever you want. This gives you a bit of an advantage as you can change your page addresses to something that focus on the topics you are trying to be discovered for.
For instance, if your page is about how to fix a washing machine, you can edit your Wix web page address to be “www.example.com/washing-machine-repair”, or something along that line.

|11) Hosting & Export Options||
If you are not a technical person or don’t have the time or interest to learn the in’s and out’s of managing the technical aspects of your website, then Wix has you covered.
Wix provides all hosting needs for you, and they have full-time, dedicated technicians to monitor this for you.
As such, you can spend your (limited) time to focus on other important things while you can just let Wix handle technical web-related tasks – such as security upgrades.
However, one drawback of using Wix is that there is no export function.
This is not uncommon amongst various drag & drop website builders, as once your content is outside of their proprietary platform, you lose the ability to use Wix’s tools to continue building / editing your website.
|12) Wix Pricing||
Wix offers you 5 different pricing plans (in addition to a free plan, if you are not ready to upgrade yet):
The higher the plan, the more features you have access to.
Considering that you don’t have to pay for separate hosting services, this will save you around $4 – $6 per month right off the bat.
Wix also gives you a free custom domain name for your first year, if you subscribe to the Combo or higher plans. This will save you about $10 – $12 for your first year.
More importantly, the hidden savings that you might not realize is that you don’t have to spend days, weeks or even months figuring out all the technical aspects of operating and building a website.
Wix has a dedicated help team for you, in addition to their own technicians that will keep your website working.
So given what you get from Wix (code-free way of building websites, new features being introduced on a regular basis, design templates, dedicated help), the monthly fee is well worth it, in our view.
