This article will provide a detailed breakdown of Volusion and BigCommerce, including all of their key features.
Volusion and BigCommerce are two powerful ecommerce platforms. It’s understandable why you might have trouble deciding between them!
BigCommerce is a leading ecommerce brand, committed to driving growth for its customers. Since its founding in 2009, BigCommerce has generated more than $17 billion in merchant sales.
Volusion is another ecommerce specific platform. Founded in 1999, this seasoned builder focuses on giving its clients top quality analytics. It’s used by over 180,000 entrepreneurs worldwide.
Overall, BigCommerce is the better ecommerce platform out of the two. It may be the younger brand, but its drive for growth and quality built-in features are able to topple Volusion.
Of course, BigCommerce may not be best for you. Each business has a different fit – like trying on shoes, you need to find the platform that suits you best.
BigCommerce is best for large and fast-growing businesses in search of a boost. It has more built-in features than any of its competitors, so everything you need to succeed is right there at your fingertips.
Volusion is best for data-driven businesses who want tons of insight into their performance through analytics. It’s not so hot on delivering the full package like BigCommerce does, but if it’s data you’re after rather than design, Volusion is the builder for you.
If you research BigCommerce and Volusion online, you’ll find rave reviews – and some that aren’t so glowing. With so much out there, it can be really hard to make a decision – especially when opinion is so often disguised as fact.
On the internet, everyone’s an expert. But we’re actually experts, and we’ve got the research to prove it – we put every builder through its paces to give you the best, most accurate information, so you can come away with a clear head and an easy decision ahead of you.
That’s just what this comparison will do. We’ll get down into the nitty gritty of all the important areas of website building, from ease of use and features to build time and beyond. By the end, you’ll know whether BigCommerce or Volusion is the right choice for you.
There’s no time to waste – here’s a quick summary of how BigCommmerce and Volusion scored:
- Sell anywhere – with excellent multi-channel integration, you can sell across different social channels such as Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest.
- Get found – fantastic SEO tools will help your business appear higher up in search engine result pages.
- Quality features – all the features you need to be successful are built-in, with more on offer than any of BigCommerce’s competitors.
- Poor ease of use – the editing interface is hard to navigate, making certain features difficult to locate.
- No mobile app – you can’t edit or manage your online store while you’re on the go.
- Technical language – beginners may struggle to understand certain terms and features due to complex terminology.
- Help and support – personal help and support, plus useful on-page prompts to guide you.
- Great tools – offers tons of data and insight with analytics tools, and has a very clear inventory system with great prompts.
- Mobile app – stay connected with your store by managing and making edits on the go.
- Limited product types – while you can sell physical goods, you can’t sell digital products through your website.
- No clear direction – doesn’t have a niche or speciality like other platforms, and those other builders provide much better services. Volusion is in the middle, trying to be a website builder but failing.
- Lack of website features – it’s not always about pushing a hard sell – you need a developed brand, too. If you want a well-rounded online store with more developed features, Volusion doesn’t have much to offer – for example, there is no blogging feature.
Building an online store can be tricky, but choosing the right platform can help make your life a hundred times easier. Before you get swept away by a builder’s features, it’s always a good idea to look at just how easy it is to use.
As well as testing BigCommerce and Volusion ourselves, we got everyday people to try them out too. That way, we can give you real insight into how these builders are to use, based on feedback from people in the same boat as you.
Both BigCommerce and Volusion are dedicated ecommerce builders, and neither of them scored very highly in our ease of use testing. This is because it can be difficult to balance powerful ecommerce tools with a simple and straightforward design.
BigCommerce uses complex terminology, which may be confusing for beginners. This builder is more suitable for people who know what to look for, and where – unless you have a basic understanding of these complex terms, building can be a slow and frustrating process, with a lot of guesswork and open Google tabs.
Like a lot of ecommerce builders, BigCommerce’s design interface is split between two areas. This means you manage the “engine” of your store, such as products and shipping, in one area, and control the design of your storefront in the other.
This is something a lot of our users struggled with, but there is good news. BigCommerce has now released a new feature called Store Design, so you can see how your changes will look as you edit them on your storefront. This makes customizing your site much easier!
BigCommerce isn’t the easiest builder to use, but that’s because of all the advanced tools that it comes packed with. Here’s what one user thought about BigCommerce:
“Everything was where it should be, but there were just so many options – trying to find the one you want will take a while.”
Volusion struggled in our ease of use testing because of its design tools, which aren’t the easiest to use. If you don’t want much creative control, then you should find Volusion easy enough to manage.
However, some users found the platform clunky, and were frustrated at being directed to the storefront first. When they started by working on their design, as you would with a pure website builder, they realized it’s far too difficult to customize Volusion’s storefront without any products set up in the backend.
For ease of use, we recommend building your store in the backend first, and then editing your storefront. In trying to guide its users to do the opposite, Volusion tries to act like a website builder – this is where it falls down, because it’s not designed in the same way as Wix and Squarespace.
Volusion received some contrasting feedback from our users. Overall, it seemed that people appreciated the features on offer, but found Volusion clunky to use and restrictive when it came to design:
“Use Volusion for the inventory and analytic features they provide, not the customization or web creation.”
“I found it difficult to use. It was clunky and irritating, and didn’t do things the way I thought it would.”
Overall, BigCommerce scored 3.5 out of 5 stars for ease of use, while Volusion only received 3 out of 5.
As a business owner, you might find yourself only focussed on the tools you need to run your store. Shipping, product uploads, analytics – they’re all super important to you, but the customer can’t see any of that. The first thing they’ll notice is your storefront’s design, and how the products actually look on your website.
BigCommerce has over 100 themes for you to choose from. The paid themes range in price from $145 to $235, but there are seven free themes available too. You can easily search for a suitable theme either by layout (for example, featuring large images), industry, or by using the search bar. You can even filter the results by price.
You can preview any BigCommerce theme before selecting one, to make sure you’re happy with its design. Different themes will come packed with different features, depending on the industry, so it’s a good idea to pick one which has the features to match your store’s purpose.
Once you’ve chosen, you can customize your design. This has been made much easier by BigCommerce’s Store Design tool. This lets you make edits right there on the page in front of you, instead of having to switch between the backend and your storefront design.
All BigCommerce themes are mobile responsive, meaning your pages will automatically reformat to fit mobile and tablet screens.
Volusion offers 14 free themes and 34 paid ones, which cost $180 each. It covers a lot more industries than BigCommerce, giving you an even wider range to choose from, and an even better chance of finding your perfect match.
Like BigCommerce, Volusion’s themes are very feature-dependent, so it’s important to pick one that includes any tools which will be important to your business.
You can switch your theme anytime you like, even after your website has gone live. Plus, all themes are mobile responsive, and you can even edit and manage your store on the go using Volusion’s mobile app.
The main drawback here is that editing the design of your theme can be challenging and restrictive. Unlike BigCommerce, you still have to go to and fro between the backend and the storefront, which a lot of our users complained about when testing Volusion.
Overall, though, Volusion’s strengths lie in its industry specific themes and broad coverage of different businesses.
If you want a store online quickly, you don’t want to a builder that will take you forever to use. But how are you meant to know how long a builder will take without wasting even more precious time? That’s where we come in.
We’ve built stores with both BigCommerce and Volusion, and can safely say Volusion is a quicker platform to build with than BigCommerce.
Because BigCommerce is such a powerful tool, it takes longer to get to grips with. It’s like learning to drive in a supercar rather than your Mom’s old Ford. If you want to make the most of BigCommerce, you’ll need some technical skill.
Volusion is more beginner-friendly, with helpful prompts to guide you as you learn. It doesn’t have the same powerful tools that BigCommerce provides, meaning it can be quicker to set up. However, our users ran into trouble customizing their storefronts, so if design is important to you, this could really hold you up.
We’ve teased you enough mentioning BigCommerce’s powerful in-house features and Volusion’s excellent data reports. Time to give you all the juicy details you’ve been waiting for!
BigCommerce has the best built-in features of any ecommerce platform on the market.
Everything you need to succeed is automatically included, meaning you don’t have to pay extra for high quality tools that will help your business grow.
There are tons of these fancy features – you can see a full list on BigCommerce’s website – but how do they help you run your online store?
Firstly, all BigCommerce stores include a free SSL certificate. SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificates are used to encrypt your customers’ data, making them essential for ensuring online payments are safe and secure.
All plans come with unlimited bandwidth and file storage, giving your store room to grow. You can sell an unlimited amount of products, and upload them in bulk to save you time and hassle. Physical, digital, and service-based products are all supported by BigCommerce, without having to download an app.
You can sell through multiple channels, such as Facebook, Instagram, eBay, and Amazon, which integrate with your BigCommerce store. That means you can manage all those sales from one place, saving you from headaches as you expand your store’s reach.
When you’re selling across that many channels, you’re going to have lots of orders to ship! Fortunately, BigCommerce makes shipping infinitely easier, providing in-house tools such as real time shipping quotes and shipping label discounts.
Last, but definitely not least, is the holy grail of ecommerce tools – abandoned cart recovery. If a customer visits your store and abandons their order at the checkout, this feature will send them an email to entice them back – potentially saving you a lost sale.
This is unlocked once you upgrade to BigCommerce’s $71.95 per month Plus plan (or above).
Volusion prides itself on being “the all-in-one ecommerce website builder”, as well as providing built-in tools. It can’t stand up against BigCommerce in terms of its features, but it does have some great selling tools on offer.
For starters, you can sell unlimited products on all of Volusion’s plans, including physical goods and services. Volusion doesn’t support digital downloads yet, but this seems to be under evaluation by the company, so watch this space.
All Volusion plans include:
- Unlimited storage
- Automatic tax calculator
- Inventory management
- Coupon creation
- Product variants
- Manual order creation
- SSL security
These features provide a great foundation for an online store. SSL security is included, encrypting user information and making it safe to process online payments. Unlimited storage gives you room to expand, and product variants mean you can categorize your goods to make it easier for shoppers.
Not only that, but with its automatic tax calculator and inventory management suite, Volusion is doing its best to make running your store as seamless as possible.
One of the strongest of Volusion’s features is its analytics and data reporting tools. Analyze customer behaviors, easily monitor stock, keep up with your revenue and total orders, and track conversions, all from one place.
Volusion helps you make sure everything is running smoothly, while giving you valuable insight into the progress of your business.
If you upgrade to the $79 per month plan or above, you can unlock features such as abandoned cart reports, bulk order processing, ratings and reviews functions, phone orders, and more. This doesn’t give you the same amount of scope for scaling up your store as BigCommerce, but it’s enough to let your business stretch its wings and really start to flourish.
First things first – neither Volusion nor BigCommerce will charge you transaction fees on your sales. The only fee you’ll find is the regular credit card charge made by payment gateways, which is standard across all platforms.
BigCommerce supports a wide range of payment options, including:
- Apple Pay
In total, you have more than 10 payment gateways to choose from. It’s not as many as competitors like Shopify, which offers over 100, but it should be enough to cover most bases.
Volusion is more limited than BigCommerce, offering only PayPal, Stripe, and Apple Pay. While these are three major payment gateways, it would still be nice to have more choice.
When you’re shopping online for a new top, a car, or even a place to order food, how often do you click through to the second or third pages of Google’s search results? We’re betting it’s not that often.
That’s where the sacred art of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) comes in. By adding keywords, optimizing headings and images, and setting alt text, you can give your site the best chance of ranking highly in search result pages.
BigCommerce is all about helping your business succeed and grow, so it makes sense it’d have advanced SEO tools built-in. These features include search-friendly themes, SSL security, optimized URLs, automatic sitemaps, customizable features, and more.
Volusion’s basic SEO tools will help you get started, and can help search engines rank your website in the right result pages.
Volusion’s built-in SEO tools include search-friendly URLs, customizable metadata, and sitemap indexing. All these things make your store easier for search engines to find, which in turn makes it easier for shoppers to find you!
If you want more advanced SEO, Volusion recommends its Marketing Services agency, which gives you access to expert keyword research and technical optimization.
Both platforms have help guides to get you started on your SEO journey, although BigCommerce’s articles are more in-depth than Volusion’s.
It’s the hot spot of online attention – if you want to really get noticed and build up a following, chances are your brand will need some kind of social media presence.
With BigCommerce, you can put links to your social media accounts – such as Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest – on your storefront. This is a great way of encouraging customers to follow and share your business.
You can also use apps to integrate your social feeds with your online store, so visitors can check out your channels without leaving your website!
Meanwhile, Volusion supports apps which can connect your store to a range of social accounts. It also has its own built-in tools, which give you the option of sharing your content across Facebook and Twitter. You can also let your customers share your content across their own social pages, including Pinterest, Twitter, and Facebook.
BigCommerce is the undisputed ruler of multi-channel integration. Its “Sell everywhere” omni-channel integration makes your life super simple. With the BigCommerce Channel Manager, you can manage all your channels from one place.
BigCommerce is the only ecommerce platform which has in-house integrations with Facebook, eBay, Amazon, Pinterest, and Google Shopping.
Volusion lets you sell through Facebook, eBay, and Amazon. You can set up a Facebook Store with links back to your own website, making it easy to manage directly from your site’s dashboard.
Volusion also lets you use apps to expand your store’s outreach across other channels, including the Amazon Product Ads app.
BigCommerce makes it easy to connect your store to email marketing platforms such as MailChimp and HubSpot. It also has tools which sync customer groups to your chosen platform, allowing you to run tailored email campaigns.
Volusion has built-in email marketing tools to let you run campaigns. If you want extra control over marketing, you can use an app such as MailChimp or Privy. For more choice you can always use Zapier, which connects your store to tons of apps like these.
Both BigCommerce and Volusion allow you to create and run newsletters.
Blogging is a great way of building your brand and engaging with customers.
BigCommerce has basic built-in blogging tools. If you want more powerful blogging features, you can link your store with WordPress or Blogger.
Volusion doesn’t have any blogging capabilities, but with Zapier, you could connect a blogging platform like WordPress with your online store. For creating an external blog, the most popular blogging tools amongst Volusion users are WordPress and Blogger.
As you’ve probably noticed, it’s hard to talk about tools and features without mentioning apps. While both Volusion and BigCommerce pride themselves on their inhouse features, they also have their own app stores, meaning you can expand your store’s functions by integrating third-party apps.
If the thought of all those features, SEO tools and multi-channel integrations has got you breaking out in a sweat, don’t worry. Take a seat as we go through the help and support options available from these mighty ecommerce platforms.
BigCommerce offers a range of support features, including:
- 24/7 phone support
- 24/7 live chat
- Community forum
- Help center
- Email support
- Video tutorials
- Advanced support on Enterprise plan
This gives you a good range of options depending on your needs. The BigCommerce Help Center is clearly laid out, and gives you the option of searching directly for your query.
If you need more direct support, you can use the 24/7 phone or live chat help resources, or make use of email support if you prefer. Those who sign up to the Enterprise plan gain priority support and an onboarding consultant, plus connections to the most senior support agents to deal with your issues.
Meanwhile, Volusion has the following support options:
- Help Center
- 24/7 live chat
- Phone support
- Community forum
- Video tutorials
- Onsite editor help
- Advanced support on Business and Prime plans
Volusion values personal service, which is why it doesn’t offer email support – instead, you’re encouraged to use either the phone or live chat help options.
The Help Center is laid out clearly, and while you may not always find what you’re looking for, it’s a great place to start with simple queries you might have. Volusion also gives you on-page support and helpful prompts to guide you through setup.

The Business plan’s extra features consist mainly of more advanced support options. This is Volusion’s most popular plan, and can support $500k in online sales per year.
Volusion’s most advanced plan is the Prime plan, which has custom pricing and adds even more support onto the features included in the Business plan.
Both Volusion and BigCommerce offer free trials – we always recommend you try before you buy!
Volusion’s free trial lasts for 14 days. You don’t need to enter any credit card details, so you can give it a go without any pressure.
Just to one-up its competitors, BigCommerce offers a 15-day free trial. Again, you don’t need to give over any payment details, unless you actually decide to sign up to a paid plan.

So who should you choose?
Volusion is best for anyone who wants data over all else, and isn’t ready for the powerful ecommerce tools offered by BigCommerce. Apart from data, it doesn’t have one particular strength, but if you’re after a beginner-friendly way into ecommerce, this is a better choice than BigCommerce.
BigCommerce is best for large and fast growing businesses. It’s the most scalable platform on the market – whether you’re just getting started or running an established brand, if you’re looking for growth, this is the best option for you.
Overall, BigCommerce is the winner! It has better built-in features than Volusion, and gives your store much more room and support for it to grow. For long-term success, you can’t beat BigCommerce.
Are Volusion or BigCommerce better than Shopify?
Shopify is the best all-round ecommerce platform on the market. When we tested it, it scored much higher than Volusion, but was only two places ahead of BigCommerce. So while it may be better than both these brands, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best for you!
Which is cheaper, Volusion or BigCommerce?
It’s pretty close, but on the lowest plan, Volusion just steals the title of cheapest. In the long-term, BigCommerce’s higher plans come out as cheaper than Volusion’s (based on annual plans.) Overall, BigCommerce will give you better value for your money, as long as you’re making full use of the features it provides.

Which is better for creating a stunning storefront, Volusion or BigCommerce?
BigCommerce is easier to customize than Volusion, so we would recommend going with that if you really care about your storefront’s design. Volusion is more flexible – for example, you can edit your store on the go with its Mobile App – but our users struggled with its customization tools.
If design is super important to your store, and products come second to your brand, why not try another ecommerce website builder? Read our Wix eCommerce Review or our Squarespace Ecommerce Review and find out how you can create a stunning online store.
