So you want to sell on Shopify, eh? Good choice.

But before you dive in – and set about creating, customizing, and shouting about your online store – there’s one crucial question you’ll need to figure out…

What exactly are you going to be selling online?

If you’re still umming and ahhing over the answer, don’t fret. We can help.

With the assistance of Shopify itself, we’ve used real data to pull together a list of the seven best products to sell on Shopify. With consistently high demand, juicy profit margins, and growing popularity, these products provide the perfect place to start your ecommerce journey.

What Is Shopify?

Shopify is an ecommerce platform that allows you to build – and customize – your own online store.

When you’re all set up, you won’t just be able to sell products, but manage your inventory, payments, and shipping. (All from a single, intuitive dashboard, too.)

Why Sell on Shopify?

Powering over 500,000 sites, Shopify is a well-loved, well-trusted ecommerce platform – and it’s not hard to see why.

In our dedicated Shopify review, we scored it 4.6 out of 5 – making it one of the best ecommerce platforms on the market. So why sell on Shopify?

  • Easy to use: Shopify is as beginner-friendly as they come, so you won’t need much in the way of tech-savviness or coding skills.
  • Affordable: Shopify’s pricing plans start at $29 per month, which is reasonable, especially considering what you get, and what other platforms are charging.
  • Round-the-clock support: Your ecommerce business doesn’t sleep, and neither do Shopify’s support agents. Seek technical assistance 24/7.
  • Scalable: Shopify’s versatile pricing plans make it ideal for ambitious small businesses looking to grow.
  • Feature-rich: Shopify sports a range of specialized features – including shipping tools and inventory tracking – and integrates with 1,200+ apps to enhance its functionality.

In our roundup of the best ecommerce website builders, Shopify’s 4.6 places it a narrow second out of seven – pipped only by Wix’s 4.7 rating. Still…for user-friendliness, price, and raw, unadulterated functionality, they don’t come much better than Shopify!

7 Products That Sell Well on Shopify

So, now you know that you want to sell on Shopify. But what should you sell?

For that all-important inspo, we looked to the data: namely, Shopify’s own list of the top trending products in 2022.

We’ve distilled that list down from 17 to just seven. So without further ado, here are the best products to sell on Shopify this year. Enjoy!

#1. Print Books and Ebooks

When we think of bookstores, we tend to think of physical ones – warm, cozy places where we can snuggle up. (And rifle through the pages of the latest paperback before we buy.)

But that doesn’t mean consumers aren’t searching for – and buying – books online.

According to Shopify, there were 2.24 million average monthly searches for “books”. Fuelled by the ongoing pandemic, the global order growth of print books boomed by 21,627%, with ebooks seeing a 335% increase.

One Shopify store doing it particularly well? Cookbook Village. Specializing in rare, vintage cookbooks, the store has carved out a tasty niche in the online book selling trade – and is thriving in it.

#2. Vinyl LPs and CDs

Whether it’s dropping the needle on an old 45” or flipping through a CD collection, different music formats can transport us back in time: taking us on a nostalgic trip to yesteryear.

Which is probably why in 2022, CDs and vinyls are still flying off the shelves.

The global market size for records is $1.3 billion, and continuing to surge. CDs, meanwhile, experienced 5,404% year-over-year global order growth. Not bad for a format that was supposed to have died in 2003!

So don’t overlook the opportunities selling vinyl LPs and CDs on Shopify will present – now, and ongoing. But if you need inspo, check out Dutch Vinyl. With a couple of brick-and-mortar locations complementing a beautiful Shopify store, it’s proof that LPs and CDs aren’t done just yet.

#3. Belt Buckles

90,500 monthly searches. High profit margins. A seemingly insatiable demand. It’s no wonder belt buckles are one of the products that sell well on Shopify – and consistently, too.

Take the amount of monthly searches for belt buckle-related keywords as an example. Try “custom belt buckles” (14,800), “belt buckles for men” (27,100), and – our favorite – “western belt buckles” (9,900), and this uber-niche product’s stock has never been higher. Yeehaw!

And for inspo? Look no further than Shopify store Buckle My Belt – which must have done its keyword research, because it sells Western belt buckles. (Plus those of the pagan, graffiti, and “Dragon Gold” variety. Spoilt for choice!)

#4. False Eyelash Accessories

A strange one, perhaps, but true – false eyelash accessories are booming.

Tied, undoubtedly, to the rise of influencer culture and more visual forms of social media – TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram all come to mind – the beauty industry has been on a slow, steady rise for a while.

But of course, creating a “catch all” beauty business will be difficult to build and grow – particularly when you have big players like L’Oreal and P&G to compete with. Instead, you need to differentiate – and here’s where the niche market of false eyelash accessories comes into its own.

Fortunately, Shopify provides professionally designed themes, app integrations, and features to help you create a good-looking, high-selling eyelash site. (Just ask GladGirl, which is a prime example). With a bit of time and effort, you’ll create a Shopify store your customers won’t be able to take their eyes off!

#5. Cleaning Products

When you get on Shopify, it may not be your store’s look and feel alone that’s clean – it might just be your inventory, too.

The cleaning supplies market is, after all, on fire. According to Fortune Business Insights, the global household cleaning supplies market is forecast to hit $320.8 billion by 2028. So, while your customers are giving their home’s sinks, showers, and toilets a freshening up, you’ll be doing the same – to your wallet.

For a quick look at a Shopify store already cleaning up in this game, check out Blueland. Its store is as easy on the eye as it is on the environment.

#6. Circuit Boards & Components

Alright – so they sound a bit boring. (To the non-technical, at least.) But circuit boards and components are in so many of the things we love: from gaming consoles and computers to home appliances, and even medical devices.

It’s unsurprising, then, that circuit board and component search volume – and sales – are only going one way. Up.

Every month, almost half a million people search for “motherboards”, while online retailers are scrambling to stack their stores with transformers, resistors, capacitors, and inductors.

There’s competition out there, sure (the Shopify-built Circuit Breaker Wholesale, for one!). But with a fresh approach and your own slick Shopify store, you have every chance of cutting yourself a sweet, circuit-shaped slice of that pie.

#7. Play Vehicle Accessories

With a global order growth of 1,418% and 22,200 monthly searches, we’re not playing when we say that the play vehicles market is taking off.

Driven by high-demand (and the child), toy vehicles – from battery-powered train sets to toy trucks – are one of the best products to sell on Shopify. They’re not just for kids, either – Auto World Store has built its brand on diecast model cars for people of all ages. And on Shopify, of course!

Finding Products to Sell on Shopify

Even though these products are what sell the most on Shopify, that doesn’t mean they’ll be the right fit for all burgeoning ecommerce businesses.

Because, by nature of being Shopify’s top trending products in 2022, the seven we’ve featured here have already peaked. Meaning these industries are already characterized by hefty competition, and these businesses (and Shopify stores) are already well established.

Almost always, having a passion for a product – or an interest in a particularly service or space – is more valuable than finding trending products. When you’re genuinely invested in an area, that verve and zeal for it will always come through via your store’s look, feel, branding, and overall “personality.”

So start with what you love, rather than what’s popular!

(Though if there’s nothing you love enough, check out our guides to how to source products to sell online.)

Summary

So, what’ll it be? Belt buckles? False eyelash accessories? A miniaturized version of the Mystery Machine from Scooby Doo?

Just kidding. As we said, what’s hot now won’t always be what lights your fire. So stick to something that’s close to your heart, and you won’t go far wrong. (Especially with Shopify as your ecommerce platform – we don’t list it among our best ecommerce platforms for nothing!)

Good luck, and let us know how your Shopify odyssey comes along in the comments. (And, if you’d like, your stance on Western belt buckles.) Or for more info, stick around – our guides to how Shopify works and the best Shopify store examples will be right up your street.
