Simple Yet Powerful SEO Tip – Anchor Text

Last updated on October 26, 2016

SEO Tips website buildersOne extremely effective SEO tip that will help your backlinks efforts is to use anchor text.  I have seen many people drop their full website URL in discussion forums.  For example, I may leave an URL in a forum like this:

“ABCD is awesome, they have the best product ever! Check it out at http://www.ABCD.com

What I did above is not the best way to drop backlinks.  Not to mention if I did left that kind of comment, the webmaster of the forum may even mark me as a spammer and rip out the post.

The proper and best practice is to use anchor text.  Something like this:

“In my experience, ABCD is a fantastic EFGH provider……..”

Now, bring your mouse cursor over the ““EFGH provider”” phrase.  You see that?  It’s a link.  If you click on it, it will literally bring you to a target website – the link is buried within the phrase.  This is the text that is “anchored” on the site.  It would be best to determine what are the best keyword phrases that describe your online business, and anchor text them as backlinks in order to receive more favourable search engine rankings.

Now, I can attempt to explain why search engines, especially Google, love anchor text for SEO purposes, but I won’t.  This is just the way it is and I’m sure you can find SEO experts that will agree.  Takes a little bit more effort to set up anchor text but it’s really not bad.  Here’s an example of the HTML coding for anchor texts:

<a href=”http://www.yourwebsiteaddress.com”>Your Keyword Phrase</a>

Remember, try your best to promote keywords or keyword phrases that are strategically important to your business.  These keywords should be the ones that really define your business, such as dating for Match.com, or website builder for Weebly, Wix, Jimdo, etc.

Look up “Long Tail Keyword” if you have an interest in learning a bit more about the importance of keywords.  Here’s one of the first articles that popped up on Google – http://www.marketinghub.info/long-tail-versus-short-tail-keywords/

The downside is that not all website forums will accept this HTML coding.  Give it a go, if it works, great.  If not, dropping your full URL for your online business is better than nothing at all.

I hope I shared a bit more knowledge through this discussion.  In my view, building quality backlinks and using anchor texts are very effective techniques in SEO.  Persevere and you will be rewarded with higher search engine rankings.

    Hi Jeremy,

Great article. I thought I’d share something I found recently from Neil Patel re: anchor text. He recommends NOT using keyword/keyword phrase for your anchor text. Why? Because it puts you at risk of being penalized by Google. Instead, he recommends “Instead of using keywords, use sentence fragments, branded terms, or other innocuous words in your anchor text.” For your reference, article can be found here: http://contentmarketinginstitute.com/2015/07/linking-techniques-content-ranked/

    Hope this proves helpful.

      Hi Laura,

Yes you’re right! I do admit that our discussion here is a bit outdated.

Using keywords as anchor text is not a bad thing if it is used “sparingly”. If it is over-optimzied, or used too often purely for SEO purposes, then it can potentially do a bit more harm than good.

As a general rule of thumb, SEO experts are recommending to write and link as “naturally” as possible. So link to other pages / sources naturally and can help improve readers’ experiences.

Using keywords as anchor text is not a completely bad thing. For instance, Wikipedia does that, but it is a very good resource. So create content for users, not for SEO!
