Features

InMotion doesn’t skimp on useful tools, even on its most basic shared plans – they come with unlimited bandwidth and free SSL certificates. If you skip the Core plan, you even get unlimited storage and websites. It’s really no wonder that this hosting provider scored 4.3 out of 5 in the “features” category of our research.

InMotion is a great option for both shared and VPS hosting. If you’re running a very small or new store, then InMotion’s shared plans are a great place to start, because you can easily scale up to a VPS plan later on. The Power shared plan comes “E-Commerce Ready,” with one-click shopping cart installations and multiple ecommerce apps to choose from, including PrestaShop, WooCommerce, Magento, and OpenCart.

All InMotion plans also come with free SSDs (solid-state drives), which allow for faster content delivery than hard disk drives, and provide enough speed to keep even the most impatient customers satisfied. Each InMotion plan also comes with $150 worth of free advertising credits, to give you a leg up when it comes to promoting your business on popular search engines.

Support & Security

InMotion scored a perfect 5 out of 5 for help and support. Its staff undertakes 160 hours of customer support training before starting the job, so you can trust that you’re getting informative answers whenever you decide to take advantage of its 24/7 live chat, phone, and email support.

InMotion’s basic security offerings include a free SSL certificate, scheduled automatic backups to secure your data, and regular malware protection. InMotion’s security features aren’t as robust as those of its competitors, but you’ll still be adequately set up to protect your store.

Pricing

InMotion’s prices offer fantastic value for money, and this provider came out on top in our testing with a score of 4.5 out of 5. Its shared plan prices range from $2.29–$12.99/month, with exclusive discounts offered to WBE users, while its VPS plan prices range from $19.99–$89.99/month.

We recommend starting with InMotion’s Power shared plan ($4.99/month). It’s the exact same price as the Launch plan, but comes “E-Commerce Ready,” with one-click shopping cart installs.

Cons

  • Expensive ecommerce plans
  • Uptime only 99.95%
  • No shared ecommerce plans
Read Review

Features

In our research, A2 Hosting scored 3.6 out of 5 for its features, placing in the middle of the pack. However, despite not sitting as high up as InMotion, A2 still has a lot going for it. Its Turbo Servers offer page load speeds up to 20x faster than regular servers, and other features like SSD storage and unmetered disk space also contribute to a swift user experience. And speed is important, since even a one-second delay can reduce conversions by 7%.

Although A2 Hosting offers a range of different hosting types, it only has ecommerce-specific plans for WordPress, VPS, and dedicated hosting. That’s not to say that you can’t host your online store on a shared plan, but it might just lack some useful ecommerce features, such as ultra-fast CPU performance and greater traffic capacity.

Although A2 Hosting comes with many perks, uptime isn’t one of them. Its uptime guarantee sits at a pretty mediocre 99.95%, which, although respectable, isn’t as high as it could be. In fact, out of the six builders in this list, A2 came second to last in this category, with a score of 2.5 out of 5.

However, 99.95% is just the minimum guarantee, meaning you could well experience much better uptime than this. And what A2 Hosting lacks in uptime, it makes up for in speed and customer service – so it’s just a question of which of those factors you value the most.

Support & Security

A2 Hosting’s customer support is one of its standout features. The Guru Crew, as the support team likes to be called, is available 24/7 via phone and live chat. In addition to the Guru Crew, there’s also a searchable knowledge base full of helpful articles that you can access at any time.

As far as security goes, the free SSL certificate included with every plan ensures that your site – and your shoppers – will be safe. But A2 Hosting goes beyond the basics with its own Perpetual Security initiative, which includes free HackScan protection to prevent attacks, reinforced distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) protection, and a dual hosting firewall to block unauthorized users.

Pricing

If you want to keep your costs down, A2’s cheapest plans are its shared hosting plans. These start from as little as $2.99 per month, if you commit to a 36-month plan.

Shared hosting plans are perfect if you’re just starting out and your online store doesn’t need to deal with huge traffic surges. We recommend skipping the cheapest plans, though, and going straight to the Turbo Boost option. At $6.99, it’s still pretty cheap, and comes with turbo servers and more power.

However, if you know that you’re planning to scale your ecommerce store in the near term, we’d recommend taking a look at A2’s ecommerce-specific VPS and dedicated plans instead. These are pricier, ranging from $11.99 all the way up to $569.99, but they’re optimized to provide the best features for online stores.

Best for Ecommerce Features

Features

Auto-installation is a lifesaver that makes the setup process much easier for you, while CDNs (Content Discovery Networks) like Cloudflare improve site speed and make your visitors happy.

SiteGround’s ecommerce plans also offer free shopping carts (installation included), free eShop transfer, and an eCommerce Optimized Server. Multiple server locations across three continents mean better site speed for visitors the world over, while unmetered data transfer ensures scalability as your site grows. We gave SiteGround the title of Best for Ecommerce Features, and we weren’t kidding – it scored 4.8 out of 5 in this category.  The variety of features that simply come included on most plans is definitely not the norm!

SiteGround’s uptime guarantee is around 99.98% – not as great as HostGator’s 99.99% guarantee, but still very impressive. 99.98% uptime converts to about one hour and 45 minutes of downtime per year. For an ecommerce site, you’ll want to keep that window as tiny as possible, and under two hours is not bad.

Support & Security

SiteGround’s knowledge base and 24/7 phone and live chat support put it on par with A2 Hosting and InMotion in terms of customer service. But what about security?

SiteGround supplies the usual free Let’s Encrypt SSL certificate, but it also has an in-house monitoring system that checks your server status every half second, to detect and automatically fix many ongoing issues and prevent future problems. SiteGround also offers advanced spam protection at no additional cost, which provides a filter for incoming and outgoing email messages. In short, SiteGround’s huge supply of features even extends to its security offerings.

Pricing

siteground logo

Save 80% on Siteground plans in September

Not only is Siteground offering 80% off annual shared hosting plans until September 30th, it’s also offering free website transfers for all plans. So no matter which plan you pick, it will come with one fast, completely free website transfer.

Siteground is a great option to consider if you’ve built your store using WordPress’ WooCommerce plugin, because there are three price plans to choose from, and prices start at $2.99 per month when you commit to a one-year plan.

The StartUp WooCommerce plan is SiteGround’s cheapest plan with ecommerce capabilities. The StartUp plan is only suitable for very small stores which aren’t really walking (or selling) yet, so we recommend skipping straight to either the $4.99 per month GrowBig plan or the $7.49 per month GoGeek plan. While slightly pricier, both of these plans provide more scalable features, like PCI compliant servers and SuperCacher for better site speeds.

When you sign up for any SiteGround plan, you’re entitled to its 30-day money-back guarantee. This makes trying out SiteGround a low-risk option – and potentially high reward, too!

#4. HostGator

Best for Uptime

HostGator

Best for uptime

Excellent

4.6

out of 5
  • Very reliable
  • Plenty of disk space
  • Not the cheapest

Paid Plans: $3.95 - $159.99 / month

Pros

  • The best uptime
  • Robust and responsive help and support
  • Ecommerce features on all hosting plans

Cons

  • More expensive than others
  • No WooCommerce-specific plans
  • No money-back policy for dedicated plans
Read Review

Features

Scoring a 3.3 out of 5, HostGator doesn’t come with the most ecommerce features out there. However, that doesn’t mean its plans are seriously lacking. They all come with unlimited file transfer protocol (FTP) accounts, which allow you to transfer files from a computer to a network. Each plan also comes with unlimited bandwidth and unlimited email accounts, and you get a free domain for the first year – although you’ll have to pay to renew your domain name after that.

Uptime is a particularly impressive feature for this provider – it scored 4.5 out of 5 in our research. At 99.99%, HostGator’s uptime guarantee exceeds the industry standard, and amounts to just under an hour of downtime per year. Since 100% uptime is impossible to guarantee, this is about as good as it gets.

Support & Security

HostGator’s help and support services are excellent, which is why we awarded it full marks in this category. It offers 24/7 live chat and phone service, and also has an extensive, searchable knowledge base that provides in-depth assistance on all things hosting related. One benefit of the knowledge base is that you can access it on your own time – and not only will you get an answer to your initial question, but you may just fall down a rabbit hole and learn more than you bargained for thanks to the many useful tidbits posted there.

Aside from the standard free SSL certificate, HostGator also provides 24/7 server monitoring and enables flood protection to prevent DDoS attacks. The Business plan, at $5.95/month, also includes private SSL to enhance your site security, and all of the WordPress plans come with two free security solutions on top: SiteLock Fix and CodeGuard.

Pricing

HostGator offers shared, WordPress, VPS, dedicated, and cloud hosting plans. You can start an ecommerce store on any HostGator plan, but we recommend the Business shared plan ($5.25/month) because it includes a dedicated SSL and dedicated IP address, and allows shopping carts and payment gateways.

HostGator’s 45-day money-back guarantee, while longer than the 30-day industry standard, doesn’t apply to dedicated plans or plans paid for by check, money order, or bank wire transfer. It’s almost guaranteed that you won’t need to start with a dedicated plan, but it’s worth keeping these conditions in mind before you choose a payment method!

4.3

  • Reliable Service
  • Great for WordPress
  • Strong features

Paid Plans: $2.95 - $139.99 / month

Pros

  • Reliable uptime
  • The best help and support
  • Regular automatic backups

Cons

  • More expensive than others
  • Small amount of storage on basic plans
  • Additional costs at checkout
Read Review

Features

Scoring 4 out of 5 in our research, Bluehost’s 99.98% uptime comes out to about one hour and 45 minutes of downtime per year, which is pretty close to perfect. Good uptime is vital for online stores in particular, because time is literally money – the longer your site is down, the longer you’ll be losing out on sales.

Despite its great uptime, Bluehost does fall down slightly in the features category. We scored it 3.3 out of 5, putting it on a par with HostGator. This is mostly because Bluehost doesn’t offer free backups on its cheapest plan, and although it’s great for those building a store with WooCommerce, it doesn’t support Magento or other ecommerce options.

However, Bluehost does have a good showing on its mid-tier plans, which are ideal for newer online stores. Bluehost’s Plus shared plan ($5.45/month) comes with unlimited SSD storage, unmetered bandwidth, and unlimited websites.

Bluehost really stands out from the crowd when it comes to making WordPress sites.

In fact, it’s the number one provider recommended by WordPress itself, and one-click installations mean it couldn’t be easier to set up a WordPress site through Bluehost. WordPress’ WooCommerce plugin lets you fully customize your online store, and Bluehost’s Standard WooCommerce plan ($15.95/month) includes a pre-installed Storefront Theme, 100 GB SSD storage, and a free two-hour setup call with a WooCommerce expert – so you’ll have all the support you need to get your store looking professional.

Support & Security

Bluehost’s customer service options range from email tickets to 24/7 phone and live chat support. We tested Bluehost’s live chat ourselves and found that the responses were quick and tailored to our specific questions.

Bluehost’s Help and Support Performance

Bluehost excelled in our in-house research. It surpassed our customer service expectations by 9% overall, more than any other hosting provider we tested.

That 9% is an average of two separate scores: Bluehost’s live chat exceeded our expectations by 3%, and its knowledge center exceeded our expectations by 15%. Quick live chat responses and informative knowledge base articles are what make Bluehost a competitive performer in help and support.

As far as security goes, Bluehost provides a free SSL certificate, Spam Assassin protection, hotlink protection, and Secure Shell access (SSH). By signing up to a Bluehost plan, you’ll be ensuring that your site has all of the standard protection measures in place.

Since you’ll be running an ecommerce site where visitors will be sharing personal information, you might be thinking about taking security measures up a notch. With Bluehost, you can do so by purchasing SiteLock Find for $35.88/year, which scans your website for malware.

Pricing

bluehost best wordpress ecommerce hosting
Bluehost is ideal for sites built using WordPress, and has a special ecommerce package designed for stores using WooCommerce.

If you’re starting an online store with Bluehost, we recommend using the WordPress eCommerce plans, because they offer seamless integration with the WooCommerce plugin. There are two WordPress eCommerce plans to choose from, which range from $15.95–$32.95/month. Of those, we recommend starting with the Standard plan, at $15.95/month.

While the Standard plan only offers 100 GB SSD storage, as opposed to the unmetered SSD storage of the Premium WooCommerce plan, 100 GB will still be more than enough to get a new store up and running smoothly.

Bluehost also offers the industry standard 30-day money-back guarantee, so regardless of which plan you’re leaning towards, you can test it out stress free.

#6. DreamHost

Best for Beginners

DreamHost

Best for beginners

Above Average

3.2

out of 5
  • Good shared plans
  • Poor uptime
  • Support lacking

Paid Plans: $2.95 - $279 / month

Pros

  • Free daily backups
  • Free WordPress migrations
  • Unlimited storage and bandwidth

Cons

  • Doesn't use industry-standard cPanel
  • No 24/7 or direct phone support
  • Only supports one store across all plans
Read Review

Features

DreamHost performed pretty well in this category and as a result, we awarded it 3.8 out of 5. It provides “unlimited traffic” on every plan, which just means that DreamHost doesn’t track bandwidth or traffic, so you won’t be charged for exceeding any certain amount. This isn’t so different from the “unmetered bandwidth” that you’ll see from a lot of other providers, and it means that your site won’t be punished for growing!

DreamHost also provides free daily backups on all of its plans, which can be a lifesaver if you’re just starting out because you won’t have to worry about losing all of your progress from one mistake. Domain names come free for the first year when you register a .com, .org, .club, .net, or .info domain, and unlimited email is included on every plan. However, its plans don’t include a dedicated IP address.

DreamHost’s shared and VPS plans are more than up to the task of powering a new ecommerce store – the sheer amount of features included on its shared plans are what makes DreamHost so great for beginners. But it’s worth noting that DreamHost’s dedicated plans are unimpressive. This shouldn’t affect your decision too much, though, since very few online stores will need the massive capacity of a dedicated plan.

Alongside Shared and VPS, DreamHost also offers WooCommerce-specific plans. These are tailored to support online stores, and the cheapest DreamPress plan comes with unlimited email, WooCommerce pre-installed, 30 GB of storage, and on-demand backups in addition to the usual daily ones. DreamHost doesn’t track traffic, but it does recommend the DreamPress plan for no more than 100k monthly visitors.  If you exceed this, though, your store won’t be shut down – your performance might just be slightly reduced!

It is worth noting that DreamHost only supports WooCommerce. It doesn’t have a Magento-specific plan, and it also isn’t compatible with other shopping cart software such as OpenCart.

Support & Security

DreamHost’s customer support is one of its major drawbacks, and it only scored 2.5 out of 5 in our research.  This is because you can’t contact support directly over the phone. The support team can call you back in response to a query, but you can’t reach out first, which can be annoying. Instead, DreamHost’s live chat function is available from 5:30am to 9:30pm PST, seven days a week, although you may have to wait a bit at peak times.

DreamHost’s security measures are more impressive than its customer support. Every DreamHost plan comes with the industry-standard of a free SSL certificate, but you also get access to DreamHost’s internally built (and pretty self-explanatory) malware remover, which finds and fixes malware on your site.

Pricing

dreamhost shared pricing screenshot
DreamHost has two different Shared hosting plans to choose from, and they're both great value for money.

Although not bad value for money, DreamHost isn’t the best of the bunch. It scored 3.2 out of 5 in our research, putting it in last place out of the six platforms we’ve explored. This is because its ecommerce-focused WooCommerce plans can be pretty expensive, starting from $16.95/month. And if you want more storage and greater traffic capacity, you could be looking at as much as $71.95/month with its most expensive DreamPress Pro plan.

Of course, you don’t need to start out on the WooCommerce-specific plan, especially if your store is only small. In this case, one of DreamHost’s shared plans will do. These range from $2.59–$3.95/month. We recommend starting on the $3.95/month Shared Unlimited plan, because it has everything you’ll need: unlimited traffic, WordPress pre-installed, fast SSD storage, and unlimited email @ your domain.

The cheaper Shared Starter plan has most of these features, but you’ll have to pay an additional $1.67/month for email hosting – and the cost of Shared Starter plus $1.67/month means you won’t be paying much less per year than the full price of the Shared Unlimited plan.

DreamHost offers a 97-day money-back guarantee, but note that this only applies to credit and debit card payments made for shared hosting plans – which, if you’re just starting out with DreamHost, will probably include you! If, however, you fall outside of these terms, you’ll only get 30 days to change your mind.

Best Ecommerce Hosting Providers: Summary

This article has broken down the best ecommerce hosting providers, with details to help you decide which one is best for your online store. Choosing the right ecommerce hosting couldn’t be more important – you need a speedy, reliable provider with good support and features to help your store succeed. This is why we’ve rated InMotion as our number one choice

Sadly, your customers will never compliment you on your hosting, but make no mistake: it is the invisible force encouraging them to buy from you rather than from your competitors. Slow loading pages or site crashes will lose you sales, but a solid hosting provider will have your customers coming back again and again.

Here’s another look at our top choices for ecommerce hosting:

6 Best Ecommerce Hosting Providers

  1. InMotion Best all-around ecommerce hosting provider
  2. A2 Hosting Best page speed
  3. SiteGround Best for ecommerce features
  4. HostGator Best for uptime
  5. Bluehost Best for help and support
  6. DreamHost Best for beginners

You can’t go wrong with InMotion, especially on account of its stellar customer service, quality features, and excellent value for money. However, if features are your top priority – and that’s a perfectly logical top priority – then SiteGround will be a great fit. And if you’re most concerned with guaranteeing a reliable service, HostGator delivers the best uptime possible.

On the other hand, some people don’t have the time, money, or technical know-how to choose an ecommerce hosting provider and build a store from scratch – and that’s okay! There are other platforms that will host your store for you. You can build, manage, and grow your store all in one place, under one price, keeping it simple but no less effective. The best of these platforms is Shopify, which combines power with ease of use.

Give your store a solid foundation with one of these top ecommerce hosting providers, and say hello to fast site speeds and soaring sales!

Best Ecommerce Hosting Providers: FAQs

Some do, yes! Sometimes you’ll find plans labelled as “ecommerce,” but in reality they’re just the same as the normal shared or VPS hosting package. This just means that those plans are already optimized for ecommerce. Other providers have actual packages dedicated to ecommerce, such as Bluehost’s WooCommerce plans, which come with even more specialized features.
No – Shopify’s platform integrates its hosting with its store builder, so you can’t have one without the other. Shopify provides PCI compliant ecommerce hosting with unlimited bandwidth for your online store, at no extra cost.

Find out more in our full Shopify Review.

That depends! Some hosting providers have website builders, such as HostGator’s builder, Gator. On the whole though, we don’t recommend using these builders for your store, as they’re usually fairly simple platforms. Instead, look at services like Magento or WordPress for more power, or Shopify or BigCommerce for all-in-one convenience.
