KEY THINGS THE BEST PHOTOGRAPHY WEBSITE TEMPLATES HAVE

“Using a template equipped with the features and functions you need out of the box can save time and hassle in the future.”

Using a template is the quickest way of getting your website online as soon as possible.

Not only are there lots of attractive designs available, but the best ones have all sorts of built-in features ready for immediate use. This saves you the trouble of spending time in the editor adding features one-by-one!

In my experience, it’s not very fun spending hours obsessing over every little detail on your website. It’s much better to hit the ground running with a template designed with your needs in mind.

The best photography templates save you time and effort because they come with:

  1. An eye-catching design
  2. A blog (or room to add one!)
  3. Easy gallery navigation
  4. Contact forms (for fans + commissions)
  5. The capacity to sell

1. An eye-catching design

“Your website is a reflection of you and your work, so pick a template that catches the eye. This will cut down the need for editing, saving you time.”

Online, everybody judges a book by its cover. In fact, Adobe (the PDF people + technology super-company!) found that 38% of users won’t even engage with your website if the design is unattractive!

That’s a high price to pay for something you can solve pretty easily, right?

Picking an attractive template for your photography website is the easiest way of grabbing the attention of visitors (and we’ll show you some of these shortly!).

Plus, if the design already looks great then there’s no real need to customize it. This frees you up to spend more time editing shots or planning your next shoot!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so choose an eye-catching photography template to keep your visitors engaged. Attractive templates also minimize the amount of editing you need to do – freeing you up more important matters.

2. A blog (or room to add one!)

“Picking a photography template with a built-in blog saves you the hassle of setting one up.”

You want to spend more time writing your blog than you do setting it up. So it makes sense to opt for a photography template equipped with blog.

Blogs let you share your expertise, which can help grow your website traffic. For example, if you consistently write about pet photography, you’ll be more likely to appear in related Google search results.

This is a great way of getting your website noticed, gaining more visitors and building your brand.

Make life easy for yourself and pick a photography template with a built in blog. After all, isn’t your time better spent behind a lens than in front of a computer?

Having a blog is important if you want to grow your brand and increase your website’s traffic. It can be fiddly to add, so save yourself the hassle and pick a template with one built in .

3. Easy gallery navigation

“It’s easy to grab someone’s attention but hard to keep hold of it. Choose a template that not only highlights your photos but makes them easy to browse too.”

Your photographs might be some of the most striking images ever taken. But if it’s hard to browse from one to the next – then who’s going to take the time to care?

It makes sense to pick a photography template with a built in gallery or portfolio page that you can quickly populate with images. This isn’t just time-saving, it’s also really convenient!

Choosing a website template that puts your photos front and center is essential. It’s the most convenient way of ensuring your shots are easy to browse for clients and fans.

4. Contact forms (for fans + commissions)

“Picking a website template with a contact form ready to go will make it easy for potential clients to get in touch with you immediately”

Being easy to contact is key if you want to grow your hobby into a business.

A study by Ko Marketing found that 51% of people believe that ‘thorough contact information’ is the most important thing missing from many websites. Don’t let it be missing from yours!

Keep things simple for yourself by picking a photography website template with a built in contact form.

This saves you the trouble of adding one to your website from scratch. It’s also a convenient jumping off point if you want to add extra fields, such as a ‘subject line’.

Choosing a photography template with a built-in contact form is the easiest way of letting people get in touch with you. It also saves you time in the editor.

5. The capacity to sell

“Picking a photography website template that can help you earn some extra cash is a no-brainer, right?”

Not every photographer wants to turn his or her hobby into a job.

But there’s no reason why you can’t make a few extra bucks by choosing a template that can monetize your photography.

You could sell prints, books, or even clothing – it’s up to you! The main thing is having to option to sell.

Picking a photography template with a ‘store’ page is the most convenient way to start selling.

Selling templates come with demo products laid out on the page + a shopping cart installed. This cuts out a lot of design work on your part and is a real time saver.

Note: Remember, to sell goods through your website you’ll need to sign up to an ecommerce plan on your chosen website builder.

Keep things convenient and pick a template that gives you the option to sell. Having this option is important because when your photography blows up, you’ll be ready to sell right away!

1) Wix Photography Templates (110+ million websites)

“Wix is the most versatile website builder around. It’s easy to use and offers an insane amount of template choices.”

Wix has an impressive 500+ templates for you to pick from and almost 40 dedicated just to photography!

That’s a whole lot of choice….

Wix’s templates are bold and innovative. They grab the attention with quirky galleries and interesting ways of displaying your photos.

They are surprisingly feature-rich. This can save you a lot of time and effort as everything you need should already be on the template.

And if it’s not? Well, the Wix editor is very easy to use so you’ll have no trouble personalizing your website or adding extra content.

The Photojournalist Template

I’m a huge fan of Wix’s ‘Photojournalist’ template. It’s bold, attention-grabbing and super easy to navigate.

You’ve got a lot of room to show off your photographs and the white space really helps to emphasize your work. Strong, chunky fonts encourage you to keep text to a minimum and puts the focus on your images.

This template is equipped to sell and comes with a demo store, which is a very handy time-saver. You’ll need to add in a blog though – or you could just re-appropriate the ‘Bio’ page.

You’ll have a photography website online in no time if you opt for this feature-rich design.

An eye-catching design?
A blog (or room to add one!)?
(room to add one)
Easy gallery navigation?

The capacity to sell?
Freedom to customize this template? 9/10

Urban Photography Website Template

The ‘Urban Photography’ template is a lot more image-heavy than the template above – so you’ll need to be careful when uploading photos. Having too many large image files on one web-page can slow down the load speed, which leaves your visitors waiting around. Not good.

I’m a fan of the full-page hero shots that sit underneath transparent text boxes. It’s a great way of sharing both information and your work at the same time.

You’ll love the in-built contact form, which has its on dedicated page. It’s really handy to have this kind of feature present from the off, as it can be fiddly to add it in later.

You’ve also got a ‘services’ page on which you can promote your skills to potential customers. Even if you weren’t thinking about it at first, this is a very convenient way of monetizing your hobby.

Out of the box, does this template have…
An eye-catching design?
A blog (or room to add one!)?
(room to add one)
Easy gallery navigation?
Contact forms (for fans + commissions)?
The capacity to sell?

Aerial Photography Website Template

This is a really functional and attractive template that is ideal for more business-minded photographers.

It’s a multi-page design that also uses long-scrolls to share information and photos. It’s a very convenient way of unveiling information about yourself or your business stage by stage.

You’re ready to sell out-the-box with a ‘services’ page, while the wall-to-wall mosaic gallery is extremely eye catching. It can also support videos as well as photos, so you can quickly make your website stand out.

Out of the box, does this template have…
An eye-catching design?
A blog (or room to add one!)?
(room to add one)

2) Squarespace Photography Templates (1+ million websites)

“Squarespace is the home of high-end photography templates that put your photos front and center.”

Squarespace has more than 80 templates for you to choose from, with about 11 of these designed specifically for photographers.

Squarespace’s designs are more subtle than Wix’s, offering lots of full page images and white space. They have a really professional feel to them, so if your site will be client facing, Squarespace can make life very easy for you indeed.

The Squarespace editor is fairly easy to use, which can go some way to simplifying things if you want to add additional pages or add a store to your template.

Wells Template

I absolutely love the classic look of Squarespace’s ‘Wells’ template. It is clean, sparse and puts all of the emphasis on your photographs. It’s a template designed for one purpose – to promote your work.

The in-built blog is very handy and saves you the task of adding one in (as we’ve seen with other templates). The ‘Read Me’ page can easily be edited into another content-rich page if you feel you need it – maybe a quick-fix to adding an ‘about me’ page?

Wells puts your photographs front and center so that they catch the eye of fans and clients alike. The bold simplicity of the design makes it very easy to edit and populate with your own images.

Out of the box, does this template have…
An eye-catching design?
A blog (or room to add one!)?
Easy gallery navigation?
Contact forms (for fans + commissions)?
The capacity to sell?
(need to add)
Freedom to customize this template? 7/10

Forte Template

‘Forte’ is a brighter, more powerful template than the more understated ‘Wells’ above. Your visitors will be greeted by full-screen photos that instantly grab their attention and hold it.

There’s a blog integrated into the design and a ‘read me’ page that can easily be tweaked into an ‘about’ page or another gallery.

Image navigation isa joy with a lovely sideways scroll that really stands out from the usual downward-scroll galleries.

This is a template that will leave a long-lasting impact on anyone visiting your photography website.

Out of the box, does this template have…
An eye-catching design?
A blog (or room to add one!)?
Easy gallery navigation?
Contact forms (for fans + commissions)?
The capacity to sell?
(need to add)
Freedom to customize this template? 7/10

3) Weebly Photography Templates (40+ million websites)

“Weebly is a user-friendly website builder that is really easy to use.”

Weebly offers more than 50 templates (or themes in Weebly-ese). Of these designs roughly 6-7 are aimed specifically at photographers like you.

The available template designs are really attractive, but also quite basic. They aren’t as innovative as Wix’s, nor as high-end as Squarespace.

If you want a simple photography website template that is easy to customize, then Weebly is the platform for you.

Cento Template

Weebly’s ‘Cento’ template is the most functional design in our rundown. It is a simple photography template that is designed to help you showcase your photographs and not much else.

You’re lacking both a blog and a store – but if you’re not interested in those things and just want a portfolio of images, then ‘Cento’ is ideal for that!

This is a template that puts practically above design, so if you want a basic website design and a template you can easily edit, then ‘Cento’ is worth a look.

Out of the box, does this template have…
An eye-catching design?
A blog (or room to add one!)?
(need to add)
Easy gallery navigation?
Contact forms (for fans + commissions)?
The capacity to sell?
(need to add)
Freedom to customize this template? 8/10

Journey Template

I’m a really big fan of the ‘Journey’ template from Weebly. It combines a lot of great features we’ve seen above and parcels them in a wonderfully attractive template.

There’s several ways to display your snaps, including full-screen images, thumbnail galleries and long-scroll galleries. This variety is useful to have as it saves you the effort of digging up unique gallery styles – you can just use the built-in selection!

You’ve also got an ‘about me’ and a blog integrated into the long-scroll homepage. This can prove time-saving as it means you only have to edit one (admittedly long) page when personalizing the design.

Out of the box, does this template have…
An eye-catching design?
A blog (or room to add one!)?
Easy gallery navigation?
Contact forms (for fans + commissions)?
The capacity to sell?
(need to add)
Freedom to customize this template? 8/10

4) SmugMug Photography Templates

“SmugMug is a specialized photograph ywebsite builder that can help you monetize your work through partnerships with printing companies.”

SmugMug provides around 30 photography templates for you to pick from.

Their designs are very attractive, but can lack functionality when you start to edit them. It can be a little frustrating adding in extra pages that were present in the demos, not to mention you could spend your time more wisely.

SmugMug’s key selling point is its integration with professional printing companies, so you can start selling good as soon as you publish your photography website – this is really convenient!

Sierra Template

SmugMug’s ‘Sierra’ template is a simple and functional template. It sways between full-page images and smaller thumbnail galleries, so there’s a good variety of ways to display your photos.

Navigation is super simple because there’s only three pages! It’s a really time-saving template simply because it is so basic.

‘Sierra’ is similar to the Weebly templates above in terms of practicality, but is a little lacking in terms of overall design.

If you want a straightforward photography template, you can’t go wrong with ‘Sierra’.

SmugMug also make it super simple to add an online store (it’s their main selling point!), so if you want to make a bit of cash too, then this is the platform for you.

Out of the box, does this template have…
An eye-catching design?
(more of a practical design)
A blog (or room to add one!)?
Easy gallery navigation?
Contact forms (for fans + commissions)?
The capacity to sell?
(need to add)
Freedom to customize this template? 9/10

Octavia Template

SmugMug’s ‘Octavia’ template is a stripped back version of Squarespace’s ‘Wells’ template. It has the same gorgeous white design with lots of space to frame your photographs.

This is a great template for putting your images front + center. It’s also super easy to navigate as it’s a very simple design – this will save you time when making any edits you feel are needed.

As above, SmugMug make it easy to add a store and start selling prints, so don’t worry that the store isn’t present by default (you literally switch it on in your editor!).

Out of the box, does this template have…
An eye-catching design?
A blog (or room to add one!)?
(need to add)
Easy gallery navigation?

Our hand-picked photography templates have been judged on their looks and their out-the-box functionality. They’re an ideal shortcut to help you stand out from the crowd, wow your visitors, and help you turn your hobby into a business.

For us, Wix is the home of the best photography website templates around. Their designs not only look great, but are very well equipped with all sorts of features that can make your photography pop!

Wix templates can used straight out of the box with minimal editing. This makes it easy to simply replace the demo content with your own – a real-time saver. There’s also no need to splash out on apps for extra features as everything you need should already be present.

If you do want to tweak your photography template, then the Wix editor is easy to use. You’ll find it’s easy to pick up and nowhere near as hard to master as your DSLR!

Squarespace’s photography templates are guaranteed to make an impact. However, while feature rich they lack the capacity to be easily monetized. If you’re looking for an artistic portfolio for your images then Squarespace is an ideal choice.

Weebly’s photography templates are simple and attractive, but you’ll need to invest some time if you want to blog or sell alongside your photographs. This isn’t the end of the world, but out-the-box, Weebly is lacking when compared to Wix + Squarespace.

SmugMug’s templates look good but for a specialized photography platform I expected more. The designs are practical rather than eye-catching, which is a shame. The fact it’s easy to sell is a bonus, but you’d be better served by a template equipped with a store rather than having to add it in yourself!

If you’re looking for a photography website template that can show off your snaps to the world, it’s definitely worth giving Wix a look. Wix’s templates are the best shortcut to a gorgeous website that catches the eye and shows off your skills to the world – show off your shots today!
