KEY THINGS THE BEST PORTFOLIO WEBSITE TEMPLATES HAVE

“Think of your portfolio template as a shortcut to a website that looks great and has all the features you need. But just because everything is done for you, it doesn’t mean you’re not free to edit it as much as you want to! ”

Templates exist to make your life easy. It really is as simple as that.

Now, you could invest hours of time and effort creating your own portfolio website from scratch.

But wouldn’t you rather use a professionally-designed template and have a stunning portfolio ready to go in just 13 minutes?

Think of what you could do with all that extra time!

A few extra hours means you could start work on a new painting. It means you could reply to all your email enquiries. And if you’re feeling extra productive, you could even get on top of your freelancer taxes!

In our opinion, using a template is the smartest way of getting online fast with a portfolio that you can be proud of.

We recommend using a template if you think your personal portfolio website will need:

  1. A stunning website design
  2. A mobile-friendly, responsive design
  3. An easy to browse gallery of your work
  4. A contact form
  5. A blog
  6. An ‘About Me’

1. A stunning design

“Portfolio website templates look great because they’re designed by professionals. This saves you a job and lets you focus your energy on creating.”
Creating a website with an eye-catching design is hard. It’s even harder when your stunning design needs to be functional and easy to use too.

So why not let the professionals take care of this tricky task for you?

The portfolio template you choose will have been designed and tested by professionals. This means that not only will it grab your visitors attention, but they’ll find it easy to use too.

This is a huge weight off your shoulders. It also frees up time that you’d have otherwise spent designing, tweaking and testing your website.

Portfolio templates give you a website that looks amazing from day one. This means you can spend a lot less time customizing and still have a website design that engages your visitors.

2. A responsive design

“You don’t know where your online visitors are going to come from. A responsive template ensures that your portfolio website looks good anytime, anywhere and on any device.”

More than 33% of all internet traffic comes from smartphones.

In this day and age, you’d have to be pretty crazy (or pretty brave!) to not use a mobile responsive portfolio template.

Responsive and mobile-friendly templates auto-optimize your portfolio for different screen sizes. This ensures that it looks amazing whether visitors are browsing on desktop, smartphone, or tablet.

This is important if you’re hoping to win new business from your portfolio. Studies show that 61% of people won’t bother returning to your website if it isn’t optimized for mobile.

So if you think about it, without a responsive template, you’re probably missing out on new business opportunities.

Having a mobile-responsive website is essential. Without one, your portfolio will feel old and out-of-date, which reflects badly on you. Using a responsive template is a quick and easy way of giving users the browsing experience they want.

3. Easy to browse galleries for your work

“Pick a portfolio template that makes it easy to browse your images. If people find your images difficult to look through, they’ll disappear – costing you traffic and opportunities…”

Let’s face it – your portfolio website exists for one reason only: to show off your work to the world.

You can make life easy for yourself by opting for a portfolio template that has a gallery to display your work in.

This frees you up to focus on more important matters, like googling the location of next week’s shoot.

Try out different template designs to see which galleries work best for your portfolio – you won’t regret it.

Choose a portfolio template that makes it easy for fans and potential clients to browse your work. This can free up time you’d otherwise spend editing your site, so why not use it to work on your commissions instead!

4. A contact form

“If you make it easy for people to contact you, you’ll win more business. So to win more business, pick a portfolio template that lets users contact you immediately.”

Without a built in contact form you’ve got two options:

  • Offer up your contact details to the internet at large and hope they’re taken by clients not scammers.
  • Spend time editing your website, tweaking the look + feel of different contact forms until you find one that looks just right. Then you discover that they’re not linked to your email account and spend more time reading a ‘how to’ guide so you can receive the messages people send to you. Once fixed, you discover that these messages all get sent to your ‘spam’ folder by default so you need to figure out how to fix that too….

Neither one sounds like a particularly good option does it?

Make life easy for yourself and pick a template equipped with a contact form.

It saves you time on a fiddly job and also makes it easy for clients to instantly reach out to you after browsing your work.

Choosing a portfolio website template with a built-in contact form is a no-brainer. Without one you won’t receive as many business enquiries – costing you money. It’s also another way of saving time + effort you could invest in more creative tasks.

5. A blog

“Not being tech-savvy is no excuse not to have a blog on your Portfolio website. Go for a template with one built in because a blog is a valuable tool in boosting your SEO.”

Blogging is a vital tool in boosting the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) of your portfolio. Improving your SEO is essential if you want to appear higher in Google search results and attract more traffic to your website.

You might not think you have the time to write a blog, let alone set up – so why not keep things simple?

When you’re shopping around for the right portfolio website template, choose one that has a blog built in.

It’s an easy way for have a blog and market yourself without any coding or tech skills.

You want to rank highly in Google search results. Google loves fresh, regular content. You can make Google and your portfolio rankings happy by writing a blog. Pick a template with one built-in and you’ll be on the fast-track to position #1!

6. An ‘About Me’

“It’s important that your portfolio clearly tells the world what you do. You can make it even easier to communicate this info by choosing a template that has an ‘About Me’ built into the design.”

You might not have even have realized that having an ‘About Me’ section is that important. I know I didn’t!

But my housemate who has a portfolio for his short films, well he let me in on a little secret…

Your ‘About Me’ is a great opportunity to tell the world who you are, what you do and where your skills lie. Being clear about your abilities is even more important if you’re hoping to win over new clients!

Choosing a portfolio website template with an ‘About Me’ page means you can tick one more worry off your list. All you need to do is update the text and you’re good to go.

Without room for an ‘About Me’ you’ll need to add a page, then a title box, format it, add a text box, format and resize it, preview, move it slightly to the left, etc.

In all honesty, you’ve got better ways to spend your time.

Picking a portfolio website template with an ‘About Me’ page saves you the time and effort needed to add one. Having an ‘About Me’ is a great way of communicating your skills to potential clients. It’s also a nice way of adding some personality to your website!

Illustrator Portfolio Template

I’m a big fan of Wix’s ‘Illustrator Portfolio’ template. It’s clean, simple and very easy on the eyes.

Your creative work is put front and center with an easy-to-scroll gallery on the homepage. You also have pages for a contact form and a short ‘About Me’.

This may look like a simple template – and don’t get me wrong, it is – but it also contains everything you need to publish your portfolio website online sooner rather than later.

The only thing you’re lacking on this template is a blog. Thankfully, Wix makes it relatively simple to add one if you want to.

“Squarespace is the home of high-end Portfolio templates that put your photos front and center.”

With more than 80 templates to pick from, Squarespace is a good choice for your portfolio website as just under a quarter of these are specifically designed for portfolios.

Squarespace portfolio templates are ready to make your work look incredible straight out of the box.

The designs are very high-end and professional. The on-site navigation is sleek and easy. The features and functionality you need are all present and correct.

Having these things built into a template is a real time-saver and frees you up from having to worry about adding them later.

If you do want a change, then the Squarespace editor gives you a lot of freedom to personalize your template design if you want to. Be aware, that it’s not as flexible as the Wix editor though.

Lange Template

Squarespace’s ‘Lange’ template oozes class and is a stunning way of showing off your creative work.

This design combines full-page imagery with small framed images, making your work instantly impactful but also easy to browse.

‘Lange’ makes getting online easy. You won’t need to do much editing because it has a built-in blog, a contact page (you need to add a form for instant contact though), and an ‘About’ section.

This is a mobile responsive portfolio template that makes your work look incredible.

Ishimoto Template

How cool is this ‘Ishimoto’ template from Squarespace?

It not only looks incredible, but gives you a really unique side-scroll to display your work in. It’s a really neat way of showcasing yourself that will stick in people’s memories.

Despite its clean design (lots of white space – hooray!), ‘Ishimoto’ has been designed to make your life life easy.

You’ve got a built-in blog and ‘About Me’ page, which is really convenient. The template is also mobile-responsive, so any design tweaks you do make will look stunning on any device.

Admittedly, you do lack a contact form. However your contact information sits at the bottom of every page as a clickable link. Not as handy as an actual form, but better than nothing.

3) Weebly Portfolio Templates (40+ million websites)

“Weebly is a really easy to use website builder. It provides templates that are attractive but basic.”

Weebly has around 50 themes (aka templates to you + me), of which seven are marked out as being designed for portfolios. That’s not to say you can’t pick any of the available themes if they take your fancy!

Weebly’s portfolio templates (soz, themes) are really attractive and put a big emphasis on showing off your work. You get a lot of gallery choices, so you’re bound to find a design that takes your fancy.

For simple designs, you get a lot of pre-populated features that are quick and easy to tweak. In fact, the Weebly editor is a massive time-saver! It’s super easy to use and makes editing a cinch.

Leaps & Bounds Template

The ‘Leaps & Bounds’ template is a really lovely one-page portfolio website template.

Having everything you need on the same page makes getting your website live a pretty painless process.

There’s no need to mess around adding pages and features. Just quickly tweak the ones already on the template. It couldn’t be easier.

This saves you a whole lot of time that can be better spent tweaking pixels on a graphic or adding a few brushstrokes to your latest portrait.

One thing to note though is that you’ll need to add a contact form if you want one.

Out of the box, does this template have…
A stunning website design?
A mobile-friendly website?
An easy to browse gallery for your work?
A contact form?

4) Fabrik Portfolio Templates

“Fabrik is a creative portfolio website builder. It’s template are attractive and professional looking.”

Farbik offers eight (yes only 8!) template designs, but makes up for this by letting you switch templates at any time.

To be fair, the templates are very attractive and very professional looking. They remind me a bit of Squarespace, although you get a wider choice with Squarespace.

Every template is responsive (which is what we want to see!), and equipped with nearly all of the key features you need.

This makes it really easy to get your portfolio website up and running quickly with Fabrik.

Coburg Template

Fabrik’s ‘Coburg’ template has a really attractive magazine-style design. The different sized frames let you place emphasis on specific projects, while the wide borders keep images separate and easy to browse.

You’ve got all the essentials rolled into one template here, so it saves you a job adding extra pages and features.

The fonts are gorgeous and everything looks really professional, so you’ll definitely make a great first impression.

Out of the box, does this template have…
A stunning website design?
A mobile-friendly website?
An easy to browse gallery for your work?
A contact form?
(contact link in header)
A blog?
A blog?
Freedom to customize this template? 6/10

5) SmugMug Portfolio Templates

“SmugMug is a specialist photography portfolio website builder. It has functional templates that make it easy to sell prints of your work.”

SmugMug gives you a decent choice of portfolio templates with 30 to pick from.

You’ll find SmugMug templates easy on the eye, but it can be tricky to add all the features you need.

This is because SmugMug template previews show you a ‘best case scenario’ demo, but only provide you with a skeleton design to work from.

You will need to add in a fair few of the features we’ve listed above yourself. This is a pain as you’ve probably got better ways of spending your time.

Still, we think SmugMug deserves its place here because it is one of the few platforms that gives you the ability to start selling. To find out more, read our SmugMug review.

Osiris Template

SmugMug’s ‘Osiris’ template is a really attractive mosaic design.

‘Osiris’ makes sure that your creative work makes the right kind of impact by covering the entire webpage in it!

As mentioned above, SmugMug leaves most of the work up to you – so its not the most user-friendly template in the world – but it sure looks great!

This is also a responsive design.

Out of the box, does this template have…
A stunning website design?
A mobile-friendly website?
An easy to browse gallery for your work?
A contact form?
(need to add)
A blog?
(need to add)
An ‘About Me’?
(need to add)
Freedom to customize this template? 4/10

6) Format Portfolio Templates

“Format specializes in portfolio websites. It can help you to make an attractive, professional-looking portfolio.”

Rather than offering you a wide range of templates, Format lets you choose one of five themes. These themes are divided by how you want to show-off your work.

This may seem like it limits your choices, but in fact it’s a really liberating way of working. You’re always focusing on the end product rather than getting stuck tweaking every last detail, which makes Fabrik’s workflow very efficient.

You’re free to edit templates in Fabrik’s ‘drag & drop’ editor, but you’ll find it’s a more limited tool than Wix and Squarespace offer.

Sierra Template

‘Sierra’ is a lovely template. It’s bold, attractive and somehow balances being very white with being very colorful!

The galleries in this template give you different size frames for your artwork, so you can put emphasis where you see fit. The variety of styles already built-in also saves you task thumbing through the available styles later on.

The top navigation bars keeps things simple for your visitors, while an in-built blog, ‘About Me’ and ‘Contact’ page makes it easy to have this portfolio template up and running no time at all.

You even get a ready-to-use ‘Store’ – you can’t say that about too many templates!

Out of the box, does this template have…
A stunning website design?
A mobile-friendly website?
An easy to browse gallery for your work?
A contact form?
A blog?
An ‘About Me’?
Freedom to customize this template? 6/10

7) GoDaddy Portfolio Templates

“You might know GoDaddy better as the place to get yourself a personalized domain, but it also has a decent website builder too!”

GoDaddy’s 300+ website templates are quite basic, but this only makes your job easier.

If you want a portfolio website without all the bells and whistles – something simple + efficient – then GoDaddy is the builder for you.

The editor is user-friendly, so you’ll pick it up quickly. This empowers you to make as many (or as few) tweaks to your website as you see fit.

Templates are mobile-responsive, so you can be confident that your portfolio looks great anytime, anywhere.

Clarity Template

See what I mean about simple and functional portfolio templates?

The ‘Clarity’ design is clean and free of clutter. It’s a one-page template that makes it easy for people to browse through your work and get in touch.

You’ve got nearly everything you need rolled into a single, easy to use page. This is ideal for non-technical users like you and me as it makes getting a website online really easy.

You’ve got a horizontal strip gallery, an ‘About Me’, a contact form, and social media integration.

One key feature that’s missing is a blog. You can’t even add one! You have to link to an external blog, which isn’t really ideal at all.

Still, if you’re after a basic portfolio website that shows off your work, then GoDaddy’s ‘Clarity’ template is worth a look.

Out of the box, does this template have…
A stunning website design?
A mobile-friendly website?
An easy to browse gallery for your work?
A contact form?
(contact button)
A blog?
(need to add)
An ‘About Me’?
Freedom to customize this template? 4/10

8) IM Creator Portfolio Templates

“IM Creator is a simple website builder that lets you create attractive portfolios without knowing how to code.”

IM Creator provides you with an impressively large choice of templates. I’d place it as second only to Wix in terms of sheer choice!

In fact, IM Creator has more than 50 templates dedicated to showcasing art + design work.

It’s a very easy platform to use as you build your site using content blocks (think digital LEGO). This means that IM Creator templates make it easy to get online fast.

They may not be the most functional of sites, but if you want a portfolio that looks professional with minimal editing on your part, then it’s worth considering IM Creator.

The Architect Template

I find IM Creator’s ‘Architect’ template to be a really interesting and unique design. I haven’t seen many templates that look similar to this one – so it’s an easy way to stand out!

This is a very basic template that is a cross between a gallery and a blog.

You’ll find it easy to show-off projects and provide context alongside them. This can be handy in winning over potential clients.

Pop-up galleries help to show off your work, while a contact button makes it easier to contact you than having an email address on the page.

It’s certainly not the most feature-rich design in our list but the design is a standout for me.

Out of the box, does this template have…
A stunning website design?
A mobile-friendly website?
An easy to browse gallery for your work?
(overlaps the blog)
A contact form?
(got a button
need to add form)
A blog?
(overlaps the gallery)
An ‘About Me’?
(need to add)
Freedom to customize this template? 6/10

9) Jimdo Portfolio Templates

“Jimdo is a handy website builder that makes it easier than most to make some cash on the side. It is much less versatile than Wix and Squarespace.”

Jimdo provides 15 website templates to pick from as well as a blank canvas. When filtering all 15 designs are classed as ‘portfolio’ designs…but you get the same result if filtering for an ecommerce store or a fashion site. So take it with a pinch of salt.

The template designs are attractive and tidy, although nowhere near as eye catching as Wix or Fabrik templates.

All templates are mobile-responsive and offer a choice of ways to show off your creative work best.

Jimdo is a user-friendly platform that can save you a lot of time when building your portfolio website.

‘Shanghai Graphic’ Template

The ‘Shanghai Graphic’ template is a neat little one-page template.

It puts your work front and center so that you instantly grab the attention of any visitors.

Pop out galleries are handy for displaying high-quality imagery while keeping things tidy on the page.

You’ve also got an ‘About Me’ and a ‘Contact’ page so this template ticks most of your boxes.

You’ll need to add a blog though as this portfolio template keeps things simple by default.

Out of the box, does this template have…
A stunning website design?
A mobile-friendly website?
An easy to browse gallery for your work?
A contact form?
A blog?

    Hi Tom,
    Nice one…!

Your help with a suggestion would be greatly appreciated…

    Feature:
I need a portfolio website that has a log in feature so that only members can log in and view… its a casting agents and the portfolio is actors and the login members are casting directors..

    Business MOdel:
Thing is, Im looking for this to be a FREE because I dont want to pay for anything until the website is up and running and everything is de-bugged and working good- and that can take months… but obviously after it is being used and in service and has been ‘tested and proven’ then it becomes an indispensible part of the business and of course needs to be paid for…

    Thanks!

    Max

      Hi Max,

Thanks for your comment. Of the website builders reviewed, Wix Weebly and Squarespace offer the ability to create a members only area and password protected pages. Wix and Weebly both have a free plan while Squarespace offer a 14-day free trial, so they’re your best options to try before you buy. Hope that helps and good luck with the website!
