Wix Payments: Processing Fees, Setup, and More

Wix Payments is Wix’s native payment provider, allowing you to accept payments through your Wix website. It’s like choosing PayPal or Stripe to process payments, but with Wix Payments, everything is kept in one place instead of outsourcing to third party platforms. The amount of live Wix stores in 2023 increased 43% year-over-year in Q2.

It’s now one of the main options available when setting up payments through your Wix website. But there are plenty of routes to take, including:

• Wix Payments – Accept credit and debit cards directly through Wix
• PayPal – Accept payments from customers using PayPal
• Stripe – Accept payments from customers using Stripe
• Klarna – Accept ‘buy now, pay later’ payments from customers
• Manual payments – Accept cash, cheques, or other offline payments
• Square card reader – Accept credit card payments on the go using the Wix Mobile app
• Pinwheel – Pinwheel Pay connects users to multiple banks, cards, and payment networks.

Wix Payments also offers an additional 40+ different payment gateways, making it a comprehensive solution for managing your payments online. It lets you:

• Offer flexible payments, from memberships to subscriptions

All of this without the need to use a third-party payment provider! The idea behind Wix’s own payment system is to offer a secure, efficient, and convenient payment method for your business that can be easily managed from one central dashboard.

Although it says the processing fees are 2.9% + $0.30, it’s a touch more complicated than that because it depends on the payment method your customers are using. Each payment method will have a different processing fee, let’s look more closely at them below.

Processing Fees: Between 1.9% and 2.9% + $0.30

Wix Payments is free to use and charges no transaction fees. In fact, Wix doesn’t charge transaction fees on any of its payment methods. This sets Wix apart from other builders and solidifies its position as the second best ecommerce website builder. Our best ecommerce builder being Shopify, which charges fees unless you use its in-house payment processor, Shopify Payments.

However, all payment providers charge a processing fee as standard, and Wix Payments is no different.

To accept credit and debit card payments, Wix Payments sets a processing fee of 2.9% of the transaction amount, plus $0.30. This is charged for every payment you receive through Wix Payments. However fees can go down to 1.9% for those in the EU, so it’s worth checking your country on the fee page.

Wix’s processing fees are pretty standard – both PayPal and Stripe charge the same 2.9% + $0.30 fee as a basic rate. While some payment processors vary their rates depending on the size of your business, or the credit cards being processed, Wix Payments always charges 2.9% + $0.30 for everyone. So you don’t need to wrap your head around lots of figures. It’s the same across the board!

Setup Fees: None

Wix Payments doesn’t come with any setup fees, but you do need to be on one of Wix’s paid plans to use it and accept payments through your site. Wix’s Core plan starts at $27 per month (when billed annually), and you can progress up to $32 per month on the Business plan to gain extra features.

It’s also worth mentioning that Wix scores 4.4 out of 5 for value for money, the best score in our ecommerce research. Considering that, and with no additional setup fees for Wix Payments, using Wix for your online store is a very affordable route to take.

Refunds and Chargebacks: Processing Fees and $15

For refunded payments in the U.S., you’ll be charged the processing fee of 2.9% +$0.30, so if you are refunding your customer on their purchase of $50, you’ll be charged $1.45. Plus the $0.30 for that customer’s purchase will not be put back into your account.

Wix Payments now charges you to process refunds or chargebacks on your account, meaning when the money is returned to customers for defective products or payment mistakes. Again the amount of chargeback fee you’ll pay depends on where you are regionally. The charges are as follows:

• Canada: $15.00
• European Union: €15.00
• Switzerland: ₣15.00
• UK: £15.00
• US: $15.00

Wix Payments lets you accept payments from all major credit cards, including:

• Visa
• Mastercard
• American Express
• Discover
• Diners
• CUP
• JCB
• Maestro
• iDeal
• Giropay

Additionally, Apple Pay is available, and the payment function will automatically be displayed to Apple users on your store. Also it might be worth noting that Wix does not accept payments made over the phone.

If you’re selling outside of the US, Wix Payments has a few extras for you. Merchants in Austria, Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland can accept payments via Pay Now by Klarna. If you’re in the Netherlands, you can use iDeal, and merchants in Germany can accept payments via Giropay. Unfortunately, US dollars are not supported as a currency for any of these payment methods at this time.

Combining Wix Payments With Other Payments Providers

Using Wix Payments can be a successful way of giving customers more choice at checkout. The payment providers you can offer alongside Wix Payments varies from country to country, but US merchants can offer a combination of the payment methods, including:

• Wix Payments
• PayPal
• Apple Pay
• AliPay (provided by Stripe)
• Manual payments
• Wix POS

This highlights a big benefit of Wix Payments, which is that it allows customers more freedom at checkout to choose a payment method they feel most familiar with.

There’s no doubt that Wix is popular, with a website builder market share of 9.5%, coming in behind Shopify (38.2%) and GoDaddy (27.9%). Not to mention the most global searches online of any other builder, with 3.8 million searching for Wix.

Wix Payments helps you manage all of your transactions in one place, and is a good extension of the Wix ecommerce features, which are ranked the best in our research, with a score of 4.5 out of 5. But let’s see how it compares to other payment methods on the market:

The main benefit to Wix Payments is that it keeps customers on your site for checkout, rather than directing them to a third-party page. This can create a more frictionless and on-brand customer journey.

However, a lot of customers feel safer and happier using a payment processor they trust, such as PayPal. Our advice is to offer both Wix Payments and PayPal, to cover all bases, and to give your customers the freedom to choose. Unfortunately, it seems Wix doesn’t support Stripe alongside Wix Payments – but it can be connected as a third-party provider.

Anyone with a Wix Core or Business plan can use Wix Payments, as long as you’re in a supported country, and your business isn’t on Wix’s restricted list (we’ll go into more detail on that in a minute).

Supported Countries

Sadly, Wix Payments isn’t available in every country right now. For the time being, here’s a list of the 15 countries, including the six currencies available, that Wix Payments operates in:

This is a pretty small selection compared to other payment processors – especially when you consider that PayPal is available in over 200 countries! For businesses that are international Wix Payments might not be for you, and we’d recommend PayPal instead.

Core and Business Plan Customers

As we’ve already mentioned, to accept payments through your Wix website, you need to be on a business plan. Here’s a quick overview of Wix’s Core, Business, and Business Elite plans, and their monthly versus annual subscription costs, per month:

As we’ve mentioned, in our research Wix does the best in the ecommerce value for money category, with a score of 4.4 out of 5. That’s because it has increased the amount of the languages it supports, from 29 to 180, offering more scalability for businesses looking to expand internationally.

Wix also updated its buy now buttons, logo generator, and offers greater omnichannel selling, including Instagram for those who sell through it. Therefore, despite increasing its prices by 17% this year, all the feature updates make it well worth the price tag.

But is Wix Payments good value for money? In short, yes. Wix plans are better value than, say, Shopify’s. The Basic Shopify plan starts at $29 per month when paid annually, which is already more expensive than the Wix Core plan. And Shopify charges transaction fees on top of its processing fees, whereas Wix doesn’t.

Shopify also charges for premium themes upwards of $150, but there are no fees on transactions in Shopify Payments. Shopify Payments also offers over 100 card payment providers, we’d say even with Wix Payment’s 2.9% + $0.30 processing fee, it still offers sellers more room to develop their store.

Valid Business Products and Services

Wix has a list of restricted products and services that can’t be sold through Wix Payments. These outright banned businesses include, but are not limited, to:

• Activities involving weapons
• Adult entertainment
• Airlines
• Animal and wildlife products
• Auctions

And that’s just the As – there’s around 60+ prohibited products and services in total.

There’s a whole other, thankfully smaller, list for businesses that may use Wix Payments, but need explicit written permission to do so. This list includes ticket agencies, charities, and car sales.

It’s worth noting that Wix Payments is not alone in restricting the types of businesses allowed to use its services. Both PayPal and Stripe also have lists of prohibited services and activities, including similar topics, such as gambling, adult content, and weapons.

When we tested Wix for ease of use it scored a fantastic 4 out of 5, making it one of the easiest ecommerce builders to use. To set up Wix Payments, if you’re starting from scratch, you’ll need to begin by creating a Wix business site. You can set up payments for your site on the free plan, but you’ll need one of Wix’s premium business plans to actually accept payments.

Then head to your Wix dashboard and click “Accept Payments” from the left-hand menu. Then click “Add Payment Methods”, and select the payment methods you want to make available on your website.

You’ll then need to finish setting up Wix Payments by clicking “Complete Setup” – this takes you directly to your dedicated Wix Payments dashboard, where you’ll find steps to follow so you can launch Wix Payments on your site.

The key is to finish entering your account details, such as your business type, personal information, including name and address, and bank account details, so you can receive your payments!

Once you’ve submitted all of your details, you’ll then have to wait to be approved by Wix before you can start using Wix Payments on your website.

We recommend Wix Payments for sellers wanting an all-in-one, convenient way to manage their online transactions. It’s ideal for businesses who already have loyal customers that know and trust you – otherwise, you could miss out on sales from people who prefer using familiar payment processors.

One of the things we like most about it is that it’s free and easy to use, and it can be offered alongside other popular payment methods, such as PayPal, to avoid putting any customers off. We recommend making the most of this and giving your customers a choice at checkout.

Wix Payments is a worthy addition to your checkout. It holds its own next to PayPal and Stripe in terms of reasonable, transparent processing fees. It’s not quite as versatile as other, more established payment processors – its small range of countries and currencies lets it down.

We recommend Wix Payments for sellers looking for an easy, convenient, and affordable payment processor. Its biggest draw is that you can manage all of your transactions from one central dashboard, putting ease and convenience at the forefront.

While Wix Payments provides a more frictionless checkout for customers by allowing them to pay directly on-site, it’s also less familiar. Customers may still prefer to have a recognizable option such as PayPal that they know and trust.
