Our independent research projects and impartial reviews are funded in part by affiliate commissions, at no extra cost to our readers. Learn more

Cheap WordPress hosting can be blighted by security breaches, bugs, and slow loading times. However, if you know what to look for, there are some hidden gems to be found.

That’s why we put our 10+ years of experience to good use, and used our hosting research process to find the best shared WordPress hosts – and then scoured their plans to bring you the best cheap WordPress hosting on the market right now. Here are the results!

6 Best Cheap WordPress Hosting Plans:

  1. Hostinger – from $0.99/month.
  2. DreamHost – from $2.59/month.
  3. Bluehost – from $2.95/month. (Our top recommendation!)
  4. GreenGeeks – from $2.95/month.
  5. A2 Hosting – from $2.99/month.
  6. HostGator – from $5.95/month.

Bluehost is our top recommendation because it provides the best of both worlds. Not only is it super cheap, but it also comes with an official recommendation from WordPress itself. Now that’s value for money!

All prices we list are the discount prices for new customers, for a 36-month subscription. This may sound strange, but we’ve used these prices because they get you the cheapest deal with these WordPress hosts.

By the end of this article, you’ll know which WordPress host is best for you – and exactly how much you’ll pay for its services. Let’s press on…

New customers can get shared WordPress hosting from just $2.95/month with Bluehost (normally $8.99)

So what do you get for a $2.95/month Bluehost plan?

  • One-click WordPress installation
  • Free SSL certificate
  • Free website domain
  • 50GB of storage
  • 24/7 support via phone & live chat

Bluehost’s 24/7 support stood out from the crowd when we used it ourselves. In fact, Bluehost’s responsive live chat and extensive knowledge center combined to exceed our expectations by 9%, beating out every other provider we tested.

Better yet, all of Bluehost’s WordPress hosting plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so if you’re not completely happy with the service you receive, you’ll get a full refund.

Bluehost is our number one recommendation for WordPress users. It wowed us in our research, comes with an official stamp of approval from WordPress itself, and it’s one of the cheapest hosts at just $2.95 per month!

After Bluehost, our next choice would be DreamHost – it delivers on features as well as price, and is a tiny bit cheaper, too. Still, when you’re only paying $0.36 more per month for WordPress’ top recommended host, Bluehost wins out over DreamHost in our eyes.

When choosing your host, keep an eye out for important features that may affect the value of your plan. For example, Hostinger only gives you 10GB storage, and neither Hostinger or A2 Hosting provide free domains, so your money won’t go as far compared with a better value host like Bluehost or DreamHost.

Heads Up: Discount Vs Renewal Prices

Most web hosts offer incredibly cheap discounts for new customers, especially when you sign up for a longer subscription term. Throughout this article, we usually talk about prices for 36-month subscriptions, because this is commonly the cheapest plan length.

Once those 36 months are over, your plan will renew for the same amount of time, but at the regular price. So Bluehost’s $2.95 per month plan will renew at $8.99 per month, locking you in for another 36 months automatically. This is standard practice for all web hosts.

To avoid this, make sure to cancel your automatic renewal – then you can shop around again for a new discount with a new host, change your subscription length, or switch plans.

Hostinger Overview

Hostinger’s cheapest plan doesn’t have as much to offer as its competitors. Although it comes with handy features like free site migration and weekly backups, it’s extremely limited, with only 10GB storage and 100GB bandwidth. That said, a $0.99 per month price tag is hard to resist!

Hostinger Pros Hostinger Cons
Choice of eight data centers keeps your loading times speedy for visitors No free domain name! Lack of free extras results in extra costs on top of your plan
Cheap $0.99/month plan is an incredibly low price for WordPress hosting No live chat support could frustrate those needing quick answers
Optimized WordPress features designed to speed up your website Extra long 48-month subscription length locks you in for four years of hosting with Hostinger

What Do You Get For Your Money?

Features

Hostinger’s cheapest plan is suitable for one basic WordPress website. Storage and bandwidth are limited, and four years is a long time to go without getting a free domain thrown in. The domain lucyslovelysite.com, for example, would cost $8.99 for the first year, then $11 per year after that – that’s $41.99 for four years, on top of your hosting plan.

However, we liked Hostinger’s focus on keeping sites speedy – it uses the WordPress-optimized LiteSpeed Cache plugin, which stores a website’s data so that it can be retrieved faster in the future.

Ease of Use

Hostinger provides one-click WordPress installation, so although you do technically have to lift a finger, it’s still a pretty effortless process. Hostinger also runs automatic WordPress updates for you, so you don’t need to worry about your site becoming outdated. The lack of included domain is a drag, however. While other hosts help you connect a domain to your site during setup, you have to sort your domain out yourself with Hostinger, which is much more hassle.

Customer support

Hostinger has a lot of strong features, but if help and support is a top priority for you, then you should look elsewhere. While Hostinger has a helpful knowledge base full of articles, it doesn’t offer live chat or phone support. If you need to contact the customer service team directly, you can only do so via email, or by submitting an e-ticket.

DreamHost Overview

We recommend DreamHost over Hostinger – it’s still affordable at $2.59 per month, but is a lot more generous with its features. With a 97-day money back guarantee, you won’t have nightmares over committing to DreamHost – it actually came top in our WordPress hosting value for money testing!

DreamHost Pros DreamHost Cons
Generous storage and bandwidth limits help you grow from day one 99.95% uptime is pretty average, so your site may be down more often
Great value for money – perfect for those on a budget No direct phone support – only callbacks are available
97-day money-back guarantee is much longer than the 30-day average Real customer support is only available 5.30am - 9.30pm PT – 24/7 chat is only available via a help bot

What Do You Get For Your Money?

Features

DreamHost’s features are nearly as good as our top-rated WordPress host Bluehost, which is pretty impressive. Automated daily backups are rare for such a cheap plan, as is the free domain privacy that’s included too. A free domain name seals the deal nicely.

Ease of Use

DreamHost pre-installs WordPress for you, which is even easier than Hostinger’s one-click installs. You can get started on your WordPress site straight away. Its free, automated WordPress migrations mean you can easily switch to DreamHost without any technical hassle.

Customer support

DreamHost’s customer support is far from a dream. There is no phone support, and the live chat option is limited. Sure, it’s great value for money, but if you need a customer support safety net, you should go elsewhere.

Are You Expecting Tons of Traffic?

DreamHost’s unlimited bandwidth makes it perfect for sites with lots of visitors. Not bad for just $2.59 per month!

Bluehost Overview

The first thing to know about Bluehost is that WordPress hosting is its speciality. It’s WordPress’ number one recommended host, and we found out just how good it really is when we put it through our WordPress hosting research, awarding it a whopping 4.7 stars out of 5. And at just $2.95 per month, it offers incredible value.

Bluehost Pros Bluehost Cons
Recommended by WordPress – thanks to its features, support, and seamless integrations Optional extras at checkout can add up if you’re not careful
Dependable 99.98% uptime means you’re not paying for a website that’s never live Storage limits could be more generous
Great value features make it easy to run your WordPress website, without breaking the bank Renewal prices can be high, depending on the subscription length you choose

What Do You Get For Your Money?

Features

Bluehost’s $2.95 per month Basic plan comes packed with generous features. A free domain saves you money on registering a custom web address, while free, expert WordPress migration makes switching from another host a breeze. It also goes the extra mile to make sure your site is secure, speedy, and easy to use, with features such as secure login credentials configuration.

Ease of Use

You’ll also find that Bluehost’s Basic plan is easy to get started on and begin using. When you sign up, Bluehost automatically installs the latest version of WordPress for you, so you can get straight to building your site. It also runs automatic WordPress updates, so you don’t have to!

Customer support

When we tested Bluehost’s support, we were impressed to say the least. It exceeded our expectations by 9% – the most of any host we tested.

customer service expectations draft

We tested four top providers’ customer support channels by asking a series of set questions and rating the speed and efficiency of the responses against set criteria.

We tested live chat, email, and knowledge base resources because these were the areas users described as most important to them.

Before starting, we benchmarked providers against the average level of service our users would expect. We then rated each provider against this average customer support expectation to calculate the “exceeded expectations” or “failed expectations” percentages.

We found Bluehost’s knowledge center and live chat support especially useful. It also has in-house WordPress experts to help with any specialist queries.

GreenGeeks Overview

Did you know that hosting is really bad for the environment? Fortunately, GreenGeeks lets you host guilt-free by offsetting three times the energy it uses. It’s also pretty committed to delivering great WordPress hosting, with free nightly backups and an uptime guarantee of 99.98%.

GreenGeeks Pros GreenGeeks Cons
300% green energy match is perfect for eco-conscious WordPress users Lack of server locations may impact loading times for visitors abroad
Free nightly backups is a rare feature to get on such a cheap plan Monthly pricing is expensive – watch out for renewal prices
Unlimited storage is ideal for media-heavy sites No managed WordPress plans – limiting if you want to scale up in the future

What Do You Get For Your Money?

GreenGeeks doesn’t hold back when it comes to its Lite plan’s features. You get the usual features, such as auto-installs and updates, plus perks such as a free domain, free site migration, and unlimited storage. It also throws in unlimited email accounts, a free CDN, and free nightly backups!

Our star rating: 4.2/5

A2 Hosting Overview

With four shared WordPress hosting price plans to choose from, A2 Hosting has the most choice. However, it lacks some key features across all plans – such as free domains and plugin updates – and it has a low uptime guarantee of 99.95%.

A2 Hosting Pros A2 Hosting Cons
Plenty of affordable upgrade options should you want to grow your site Low 99.95% uptime guarantee could mean you’re paying for less time online
Anytime money back guarantee means you can try it risk-free Lacks key features such as plugin updates, which means more work for you
Servers optimized for speed and security to help get your site off the ground Poor help and support, which failed our expectations by 9%

What Do You Get For Your Money?

Features

A2 Hosting delivers on most of the WordPress basics you’d expect from a top WordPress host: WordPress itself comes pre-installed, and it runs automatic software updates for you. However, there’s a hitch – A2 Hosting doesn’t run updates on plugins for you like many other hosts do, meaning you need to be vigilant to keep your whole site up to date.

Ease of Use

A2 Hosting pre-installs WordPress for you and offers a free migration service too, so you don’t need to worry about setup. It also throws in a whole bunch of technical features that beginners may not need, and could easily become overwhelmed by. Our advice is to make sure you’re confident with these features to ensure value for your money.

Customer support

A2 Hosting’s support failed our expectations by 9% overall. So why is it the best host for customer service? Well, it deserves that title because of its stellar email support, which we highly recommend for informative, enthusiastic responses. If you’re not a fan of email support, however, you won’t find much joy with A2 Hosting’s other support channels.

HostGator Overview

HostGator has the best uptime guarantee at 99.99%, meaning your site is up and running for the most amount of time possible. HostGator also offers free backups, unmetered bandwidth, and free domains on all its plans. However, it’s the most expensive WordPress host on our list.

HostGator Pros HostGator Cons
Outstanding 99.99% uptime guarantee is the best around Expensive plans compared to other top WordPress hosts
You get some nice perks, including a free domain and backups Value for money – you don’t get many extra features for the extra cost
Supports large traffic – cheapest plan can handle up to 100k visitors per month Control panel is a little dated, and isn’t as easy to use

What Do You Get For Your Money?

Features

The truth is, HostGator doesn’t add much more to its WordPress plan to justify the higher entry price. Its standout features include unmetered bandwidth (to support up to 100k visitors per month), free backups, and a free domain name. Its 99.99% uptime guarantee is also worth shouting about!

Ease of Use

HostGator’s control panel is a little outdated and clunky, which could prove to be frustrating or tricky for beginners. The good news is that setup is easy with one-click WordPress installation, or free site migration if you’re switching from another host. It also provides free backups, so you can relax knowing your content is protected.

Customer support

HostGator provides superb customer support round the clock via phone and live chat. We tested it out ourselves and found that overall, HostGator exceeded our support expectations by 3% – not as good as Bluehost, but not as bad as A2 Hosting. HostGator’s knowledge base was by far its best support resource.

Best Cheap WordPress Hosting: Conclusion

Cheap doesn’t always mean bad – this article has shown you the six best cheap WordPress hosting providers, and you’ve seen just how much power you can get for less than $3 per month.

However, the cheapest option isn’t always the best. With this in mind, we recommend Bluehost as the best cheap WordPress hosting provider. It only costs $2.95 per month, and is the best WordPress host on the market – it’s our top choice, and even comes with an official recommendation from WordPress itself.

If you want the cheapest of the cheap, then Hostinger is your go-to – but be warned that you’ll need to commit for four years to get its cheapest $0.99 per month price.

When choosing your cheap WordPress plan, keep in mind that you’ll need to sign up for a pretty lengthy contract – 36 months is the standard – and that not all hosts provide the same level of features.

Bluehost provides a free domain, automatic WordPress installation and updates, 50GB storage, and 24/7 expert WordPress support for $2.95 per month. Bluehost’s amazing value gets our vote – but which of these cheap WordPress hosts will get yours?

Do You Have $2.95/month to Spend on Hosting?

If so, we recommend Bluehost. It’s cheap, it’s powerful, and it’s the best WordPress host on the market. You won’t find better value!

FAQs

WordPress recommends three hosting providers:

  1. Bluehost
  2. Dreamhost
  3. SiteGround

They come with WordPress specific features and so are perfectly suited to hosting WordPress sites. While all three are good, after testing each one, we agree with WordPress’ number one recommendation – that Bluehost is the best host for WordPress websites.

It depends on the size of your website. Shared hosting means you’re sharing the server with multiple websites, so your resources are limited. This is why we recommend a feature-rich host like Bluehost which gives your site the best resources.

Web hosting comes as part of the package with WordPress.com, so everything is sorted for you like website security, and the domain name. However, with WordPress.org you are required to source your own web hosting, and you need to code the website yourself.

Actually… yes and no. There are two different versions of WordPress: WordPress.org and WordPress.com. WordPress.org is the platform we’ve discussed here: it’s powerful, scalable, and requires a hosting provider. WordPress.com is less advanced, and hosting is taken care of for you – it’s basically an easy way to build a smaller site!

WordPress states that the vast majority of hosting providers “meet the WordPress minimum requirements,” but in order to go above and beyond, they recommend Bluehost, Dreamhost, and SiteGround.

We didn’t include SiteGround on this list because it only offers managed WordPress hosting, and so has a more expensive starter plan at $6.99 per month.
