Weebly’s website builder isn’t shutting down for now, but the future of the platform remains uncertain under Square’s ownership.

While the website builder remains up and running, Weebly did announce the closure of its mobile app for later this year. Is this a sign of Weebly’s operations winding down? Is it still worth signing up for Weebly in 2025? Let’s dig into what we know so far.

Is Weebly Shutting Down?

As of October 2025, there’s been no indication that Weebly’s website builder will shut down.

Weebly customers received an email a few weeks ago to share an update on the future of the Weebly mobile app:

“We want to let you know that the Weebly mobile app will be removed from the App Store and Google Play on December 1, 2025. After this date, you’ll no longer be able to download or update the app.”

The email goes on to reassure customers that Weebly sites will remain live, but they can only be managed via desktop as of December.

Last year, many Weebly users feared the website builder would be sunset in the summer of 2025. The concerns started thanks to a Weebly support page, which suggested the platform would only commit to supporting the Weebly editor until this time. However, the company has since removed the wording, and summer has now been and gone, while Weebly remains standing.

According to a community post on Square, “Square is managing a gradual migration process.” So, while Weebly remains live right now, users could be nudged towards Square over time – as new users already are.

Weebly vs Square Online

Weebly was acquired by Square in 2018, which triggered the gradual merging of the two platforms. Square wording, branding, and logos are all visible when using Weebly, which can be quite confusing when the two still operate under separate names.

Since the acquisition, Square’s ecommerce website builder Square Online has been the primary option for new users. You can still access Weebly if you want to, but it’s not actively encouraged.

According to a Weebly support page:

“We have no plans to discontinue the Weebly site builder at this time. However, we encourage new sites to be built with Square Online, a robust, mobile-optimized eCommerce solution.

I’d like to draw your attention to the “at this time” wording and the not-so-subtle nudge that users build with Square Online instead of Weebly, despite the reassurance the message tries to give. Does this sound like a website builder with long-term plans for the future? Not really.

The email announcing the closure of the Weebly mobile app also explained that the team wants to focus “resources on improving the desktop and Square Online experiences so you can manage your business with more powerful, reliable tools.”

While that might give Weebly site owners some hope, the Weebly website editor has seen a growing number of issues and little to no updates since its acquisition. As a result, Weebly can’t compete with major website builders anymore, like Wix or Squarespace.

What Alternatives Are There to Weebly?

There are plenty of Weebly alternatives to build a website with or migrate your existing website to – and these platforms continue to receive updates and support, unlike Weebly.

Of our recommendations, Wix is the best all-in-one alternative, providing high-quality features, a free plan (which you can stay on forever), and a suite of AI tools, including an AI-powered assistant named Astro.

Other popular options include Squarespace for design and Shopify for selling online. An up-and-coming builder I also recommend from recent testing is Hostinger, especially if you’re looking for an affordable alternative.

Of course, there’s also Square Online, which is a natural swap for existing Weebly users. Square Online’s pricing ranges from $0 to $149 per month (billed annually).

Is It Easy To Switch Website Builders?

Unfortunately, switching from Weebly to another website builder isn’t the most straightforward process.

If you want to move to Square, you’ll need to create a new Square Online account and start from scratch, despite operating under the same ecosystem. Essentially, Weebly is a closed website builder. So, even if you want to switch to another website builder, like Wix or Shopify, you’ll need to build everything again manually.

Should You Still Use Weebly?

In short, I don’t recommend using Weebly to build a website at all.

For existing Weebly users, I’m afraid the clock is ticking. With regular bugs, no new features, and limited support (primarily provided through Square’s community forum), the best thing you can do is abandon ship sooner rather than later. And, unfortunately, all of your work will be lost at sea, since Weebly won’t help you get in the lifeboat.

It’s a bad situation either way, and the shutdown of Weebly’s mobile app next month could be a real sign of what’s to come. Weebly’s end isn’t a question of if, but when.
