We looked into the market share for website builders like Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, and WordPress. We wanted to know how much of the market these guys dominated and how well websites using them are performing. Let’s get right to it!

What is Market Share?

Market share is the process of tallying up an industry’s total sales, and then taking a particular company in that industry’s total sales, and calculating their percentage within their industry. Market share tells us which builders are financially thriving, and therefore doing well even in these financially unstable times.

An Overview of Website Builder Market Share

The website builder market is expected to have a compound annual growth rate of 6.9% from now until 2032. It’s projected to grow to beyond $14.4 billion globally in the next 10 years. In just the US the website builder industry made $594 million in 2022. A study by BuiltWith showed that over 23 million websites are made with website builders and ecommerce platforms.

For market share values we tallied up the revenue for each builder, and divided the total revenue for each builder by the global $14.4 billion. Here’s a break down of our findings.

Pie chart of different website builders with percentage of market share

Wix isn’t just popular in our best website builder reviews but has 9.5% of the entire market share. It’s been seeing a steady increase year on year – with revenue of $1.39 billion in 2022. But what’s even more interesting is that Shopify and GoDaddy both flew past Wix, with Shopify making an astounding revenue of $5.6 billion and GoDaddy close behind with $4.1 billion.

Combined both of them take over 50% of the market share which is quite incredible to see, especially when you look on Ahrefs, and see how many people are searching online for each builder. Last checked the global searches per month was:

  • Shopify – 3.3 million
  • Wix – 3.8 million global searches
  • Squarespace – 898,000
  • Weebly – 387,000

Showing that Wix is the most popular in terms of brand awareness, but perhaps not the one that people are buying into compared to Shopify and GoDaddy.
