Best for White Collar Businesses
- Scalable tools to help businesses grow
- Templates cover a vast range of industries
- Lots of features that are easy to embed
- Templates aren’t as well designed as those from other website builders
- No free plan available
- Dated interface
1&1 IONOS MyWebsite is a website builder designed for the professional. Its design, features and interface are all geared towards helping small businesses get online.
But before we get into this, let’s go back a step.
A website builder is an online programme that helps you build your own website. You don’t need to know how to code, you don’t need to fork out thousands of dollars, and it’ll only take you a few hours to create!
Here at Website Builder Expert, we test tons of website builders. We don’t just want to tell you about the best ones on the market – we want to pair you with a website builder that will meet your personal needs.
Now that’s cleared up, we’ll walk you through how good 1&1 IONOS really is.
How easy is it to use?
Is it just for small businesses?
Read on to find out…
This review covers 1&1 IONOS’ website builder, MyWebsite. The company also provides hosting – you can read our 1&1 IONOS hosting review here.
The purpose of a website builder is to make designing a website as quick and easy as possible. Like most, 1&1 IONOS gives you templates to work from.
These templates act as your starting base. They’re divided into categories and come with sample text and images, so you can quickly get a feel for what your site will look like.
Once you’ve decided on your template, you can start populating it with your own content. Seems simple enough, right?
Right. But we want to know how easy you find it. To do this, we got everyday people to test 1&1 IONOS and feedback their thoughts. Here are just some of their comments:
The use of templates provides some form of comfort, knowing that a lot of the work is already done for you.
Some things were easy to understand and quite intuitive, like changing things on a page. You simply click and they pop up.
The only major problem people came up against was trying to customize 1&1 IONOS’ templates. You can put your content into a template, but moving things around the page can be frustrating.
This is because the editing interface works in sections. You can move things around in each specified section, but not to anywhere you like on the page. This does mean your website will never look messy, though.

So what do users think of 1&1 IONOS MyWebsite?
Well, when we asked, 60% of people said they would recommend 1&1 IONOS to a friend.
Not only does this show that most people had a positive experience with 1&1 IONOS, but it also suggests the platform has more use than just business.
1&1 IONOS for Blogging
Blogging is one of 1&1 IONOS’ biggest strengths.
1&1 IONOS offers features specifically designed for blogging, such as displaying article categories, allowing comments on posts, social bookmarking, a search feature, and an RSS feed.
This makes it a great website builder to use if you need a blogging site, or if your business has a blog it wants to promote. If you’re keen to learn more about how to start your own blog, read our guide.
1&1 IONOS for Business
This is where 1&1 IONOS comes into its own. The MyWebsite website builder is set up to help small businesses get online.
1&1 IONOS comes with a free domain for the first year, a personal email account, built-in email marketing, social media integration, and tools for SEO (search engine optimization).
It can also translate your site into multiple languages. This is great if you’re looking to promote your services in different countries, but more on that later.
1&1 IONOS for Ecommerce
In the past, we saw 1&1 IONOS’ ecommerce functionality as just a useful add-on, but it’s come a long way since then. There are now three plans on offer, the most advanced of which (Online Store Expert) allows you to integrate your store with Facebook, Instagram, Ebay and Amazon, and to sell up to 1,000,000 products/services. Not bad at all!
While it’s still got a long way to go to match the power of dedicated ecommerce platforms like Shopify it’s definitely much more scalable than other website builders with an ecommerce plan.
1&1 IONOS for Portfolio
Portfolio sites certainly aren’t a strength of 1&1 IONOS. The templates have a more corporate feel to them, and given your lack of creative control, they don’t really work for artistic industries.
You can create photo galleries, add testimonials, and embed live feeds from your social media. This is great for showcasing some work, but it’s not enough if that’s the main focus of your site.
Squarespace is the clear winner when it comes to building creative portfolio sites. Its templates are modern and stylish, and it’s not just us saying that – it’s used by loads of professional photographers and artists too.
1&1 IONOS for Scalability
Thanks to its built-in marketing tools, SEO features, and multilingual translation, we’d say 1&1 IONOS is very scalable.
Your website can grow with your business, and you can even start selling online should you wish. Again, 1&1 IONOS is for small businesses and blogging sites: if that’s the type of site you’re after, you’ll be able to grow your business/blog no problem.
When it comes to adding features (or widgets as they call them), 1&1 IONOS makes the process as easy as possible.
From its side panel (right), you can drag and drop anything you like straight onto your site – yes, it’s that easy!
Think of it as a bit like PowerPoint. Simply select the widget you want, then drag it to where you’d like to place it on your page.
Text, videos, social buttons, maps, contact forms – you name it, 1&1 IONOS lets you embed it.
These widgets are categorized to make them simple to find. You can also search for something specific in the bar above.
In terms of tools, it’s got some really great ones that can help you grow and stand out. Below are three of the most important:
You don’t need to rely on the sometimes flakey Google Translate. With 1&1 IONOS, you can translate your site’s content into 62 different languages. Not only that, if you’d like multiple languages on your site at once, you can have up to 25 at any given time. Muy bien!
This is a fantastic tool for anyone who works internationally. You don’t have to limit yourself to the US and UK markets – advertise your services in Spanish, French, or even Mandarin!
One neat tool 1&1 IONOS offers lets you change your site’s content based on who’s viewing it, or what time of year it is.
Let’s say you’re a dental practice and want to let new customers know they can get a free consultation. You can set your site up so new visitors see the free consultation offer, but others won’t – amazing!
This works for seasonal deals as well. You can change what people see on your site to reflect the calendar month.
Help and Support
1&1 IONOS offers 24/7 email and phone support. On top of that, it has live chat available from 8am-8pm, and a dedicated knowledge base.
The icing on the cake though, is the new personal consultant. This is an employee you can contact directly for recommendations, explanations and advice.
1&1 IONOS has two types of pricing plans – ecommerce, and non-ecommerce.
The only non-ecommerce plan is the ‘Online plan’. It’s your basic website builder, coming with all of the 1&1 IONOS’ basic features. Being a non-ecommerce plan, you can’t sell online with it.
If you’d like to sell through your site, you have three ecommerce plans to choose from:
- Online Store – $15/month
- Online Store Advanced – $25/month
- Online Store Expert – $45/month
The main difference between the ecommerce plans is the number of products you’re able to stock; with the Online Store plan, you can sell up to 5,000. With the Online Store Advanced plan it’s 10,000, and with the Online Store Expert plan you can sell up to 1,000,000 products.
The other key difference is the number of other channels you’re able to integrate with. With the Online Store plan, you’re limited to a Facebook store. The Online Store Advanced plan adds Instagram into the mix, and with the Online Store Expert plan you’ve got the option of Amazon and Ebay, too. Even if you only want to dabble in other channels, for $45/month the Online Store Expert plan is surely the way to go.
All plans (ecommerce, or non-ecommerce) come with a free domain and email accounts, social media and business widgets, and a multilingual translator tool. We can think of much worse ways to spend five bucks!
There’s no free trial or plan with 1&1 IONOS, but at $60 for the entire year, we reckon it’s well worth taking a look at and seeing what you think.
1&1 IONOS is a solid website builder that doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not.
If you want some flashy, arty website, there are plenty of other platforms out there to choose from. But if you want a serious website to promote your business, 1&1 IONOS MyWebsite is the website builder for you. You can put a site together quickly and easily, without spending a fortune – or even spending much at all.
With great tools like email marketing, multilingual translation and 24/7 help and support, you’ll have everything you need to get your website up-and-running fast, then scale up effectively when the time comes.
We’d recommend that small businesses and bloggers sign up to 1&1 IONOS and see what they think. It’s as cheap as five dollars a month and could help you make your dream a reality.
What about 1&1 IONOS hosting?
1&1 IONOS’ hosting services are separate to the website builder. It offers web hosting, cloud hosting and dedicated hosting. If you’re interested in learning more about hosting, read our article on ‘what is hosting’ here.
How can 1&1 IONOS help me rank on Google?
There are loads of ways to boost your website’s ranking, but 1&1 IONOS has some truly useful SEO features to give you the best possible chance. Things like writing your own meta titles and descriptions, getting keyword support, and integrating Google Analytics are all possible.
Are 1&1 IONOS’ templates mobile friendly?
Yes! All 1&1 IONOS templates are mobile responsive, meaning they automatically adapt to fit phone and tablet screen sizes. One thing to be wary of, though, is that you can’t change templates after your site has gone live. Something to bear in mind when you initially pick one: go for a template that can grow with you.
