We’ve spoken to real artists who have been through the process of getting online, and together we’ve reached the conclusion that affordability, design and SEO are the field’s top priorities.

Squarespace Pros Squarespace Cons
  • Squarespace templates are widely regarded as the best of the best for design, which is an asset for artistic websites in particular
  • The drag-and-drop nature of Squarespace templates makes them incredibly easy to format
  • The downside of Squarespace’s drag-and-drop nature is having limited control over your site’s design – it will be stunning, but it won’t be personal
  • Squarespace has a free trial so you can test out the interface, but it has no free plan. You’ll have to upgrade to a paid plan after two weeks to reap all the benefits of this platform

Squarespace is best known for its stunning templates, sleek design, and ease of use. In other words, all of the top priorities for an artist looking to accentuate his or her work.

Squarespace is a drag-and-drop website builder, which makes for easy design. But unlike some other builders, you can’t just drag anything anywhere. Squarespace templates are more section-based, which takes a little longer to get comfortable with.

The drag-and-drop model means you don’t have as much control over end results as you would with more advanced platforms. But we don’t count this against Squarespace, since the templates it offers are some of the best around. You can’t really make a bad choice, since every original template is stunning –  but we trust your artistic eye to know that!

Squarespace doesn’t have a free plan, but it does offer a 14-day free trial for you to decide exactly which plan you’ll need. If you want our two cents, the Personal plan ($12/month) is a great pick for smaller personal sites and comes with a custom domain and 24/7 support. That’s everything you need to get off the ground, and you can always upgrade later!

Weebly Pros Weebly Cons
  • Weebly is a super affordable website builder, which makes it a perfect place to get started on the web
  • Weebly is very easy to use – again, ideal for beginners
  • Weebly has strong SEO functions, which will help your site rank on search engines and ultimately get you more visitors
  • Weebly’s site designs aren’t as impressive as its competitors’ templates. It definitely can’t hold a candle to Squarespace’s design options
  • Weebly has a free plan, but you’ll have to upgrade to a paid plan to be able to do much with your site

Weebly comes in second for showcasing art because of its strong Search Engine Optimization (SEO) features. These tools allow more people to find your website by helping your site rank higher on search engines like Google. That means more admiring eyes on your work!

In fact, Weebly came out top in our research for Website Features, scoring 4.4/5. With plans starting at just $5/month, it also offers pretty unbeatable value, scoring 4.3/5 in this area.

Its designs aren’t as impressive as the likes of Squarespace or Duda (which we’ll come to shortly), but it is super easy to use, and it offers a free plan. To simply showcase your art you can use the free Weebly plan, but to access more powerful tools, and to remove Weebly ads, we recommend upgrading to the Pro plan for just $12 per month.

Wix Pros Wix Cons
  • Wix offers the same drag-and-drop ease of use as Squarespace and Weebly
  • Wix Art Store is an optional addition to your site that provides a beautiful layout and easy selling functions for your work
  • Wix offers pretty robust free plans
  • You can’t switch templates on Wix, so once you decide on a design, there’s no going back
  • Wix gives you a lot of choices and features for your site, and it may take you longer to get online than with some simpler website builders like GoDaddy

In third place comes yet another easy to use, drag-and-drop website builder. This time, it’s… Wix!

Wix’s ease of use makes it a strong fit for most websites, but it’s great for artists in particular because of the Wix Art Store. Wix Art Store is an add-on that allows you to sell your artwork on your Wix site, without any of the business-side hassle.

You might be wondering why we’re not saving it for the “selling” list later on. That’s because Wix Art Store emphasizes your artwork just as much as it emphasizes sales. That means you get the highest image quality, mobile-friendly viewing, and artistic templates – or in other words, a website with heart.

Wix does offer free plans, so you can build a stunning art gallery for no cost. However, Wix has three paid plans, which offer more storage and unlimited pages. We recommend that you start out on the Combo plan, which costs just $13/month – you can easily upgrade later if you want to start selling on the side.

Duda Pros Duda Cons
  • Duda was built to be a creative platform, and that shows in its beautiful templates
  • Comes with a number of apps and widgets to keep your site fresh and engaging
  • Duda’s design process is very user-friendly
  • Duda is expensive. After the 14-day free trial period, you’ll have to settle on a plan of at least $14/month
  • Duda doesn’t offer much SEO guidance

Struggling with artistic blocks? Duda will help you smash through the wall. This is a platform designed for those who possess artistic talent, but are lacking some inspiration. If you’re stuck for ideas, Duda comes with built-in apps and widgets to encourage alternative solutions.

Duda has some lovely templates, too, and it’s really easy to use. It was our top scorer in terms of Design Flexibility, scoring an impressive 4.9/5. However, all this comes at quite a high cost – Duda is almost twice as expensive as Wix on average, with price plans ranging from $14 to $74 per month. Duda does have a 14-day free trial period, but afterwards you’re going to have to shell out.

GoDaddy Pros GoDaddy Cons
  • GoDaddy is extremely easy to use, which not only saves you a headache but also allows you to get online quickly
  • Provides 24/7 customer support – so you’re doubly safe from headaches!
  • Cannot compete with the likes of Squarespace or Duda when it comes to design
  • GoDaddy’s features get the job done, but they’re not as shiny and new as the apps and widgets that its competitors can provide

Most of us turn to website builders because the idea of spending hours (or, let’s be honest –  days) laboring over the technical stuff ourselves is a no-go. If saving time is your number one priority, then GoDaddy is as good as it gets. It’s super easy to use, so there’s no time investment to figure it out, and you can get online in a matter of minutes.

GoDaddy is also relatively cheap, but what you gain in time and money you lose in creativity. Because setting up a site with GoDaddy is such a quick and easy process, you don’t have as much say in the design. This means you won’t get to customize your site to match your artwork, and you run the risk of ending up with a site that looks “plain” in comparison to others.

GoDaddy doesn’t offer any free website builder plans, but it does have a one-month free trial. If you like what you’ve seen after a month, we recommend beginning with GoDaddy’s Standard plan at $15/month. It’s not the cheapest (that would be the Basic plan at $10/month), but it includes SEO features that the Basic plan does not – which means your artwork has a much better chance of being found online!

Strikingly Pros Strikingly Cons
  • Excellent help and support
  • Built-in blogging platform, which is a great way to keep your site visitors engaged and in the loop
  • Very limited design flexibility
  • Not as scalable as bigger website builders, like Squarespace and Wix. If you’re looking to grow your site in the future, then Strikingly is not for you

Strikingly is another platform that prioritizes speed over in-depth editing, so you won’t have much control over the end result and the template may feel a little bland. But hey, at least your artwork will steal the show.

Strikingly excels in ease of use and customer support, which are both valuable assets. In terms of design and scalability, it can’t compete with the bigger names like Squarespace and Wix, but if you’re looking for a quick, affordable, and easy way to get online, then it’s a good choice.

Strikingly has a free plan, so you can test the waters with features like blogging, contact page, and social feed. If you outgrow the free plan, we recommend upgrading to the Limited plan for just $8/month, which includes a domain name that will give your site a much more professional feel.

WordPress.com Pros WordPress.com Cons
  • Offers an incredibly hands-on level of design customization
  • Has a free plan to get you started
  • You can’t get the benefits of WordPress.com’s design customization unless you know how to code – it’s a more advanced platform than the rest of our top choices
  • WordPress.com is not the fastest way to get online. If you’re looking for speed and ease of use, you’re better off with Strikingly or GoDaddy

As a website building platform, WordPress.com excels in customization, which is a major plus for design-minded artists. However, it’s kind of the opposite of Strikingly and GoDaddy in that it’s great for design, but weak for speed and ease of use.

The bulk of WordPress’ design customization requires some knowledge of code, which is time-consuming at best and difficult at worst. However, if you are willing to delve into the technical side, the resulting design personalization is a great reward!

If you’re up to the challenge, WordPress has a free plan to start off. If you feel comfortable with WordPress after using the free plan, we recommend upgrading to the Personal plan for $4/month, billed yearly. It comes with a custom domain and access to 24/7 support – which will come in handy when using such an advanced platform!

Best Website Builders for Artists: To Sell Your Art

Now you’ve got an online gallery for your artwork, why not make some extra money from your blood, sweat and tears? Okay, that may be slightly dramatic, but there’s no harm in getting paid to do what you love.

You’ve probably heard of online marketplaces like Etsy. These are great for getting your artwork out there, but you will be competing with so many other artists’ work. Also, with online marketplaces, artists starting out in their career might be shocked by the high commission fees, which can reach up to 40% per sale.

However, with a website builder, every pair of eyes is on your work alone. In terms of cost, you may pay transaction fees, but these are usually only around 2% – nothing that’s going to make too much of a dent in your budget.

So this is where e-commerce website builders come in. They are there specifically to help you sell items online, and make the whole process simple by providing all the tools you need in one place.

Platforms like Shopify and BigCommerce are suited to ambitious business owners who want to scale fast. Meanwhile, Wix and Squarespace are better suited to small stores selling a few pieces of art, because they focus more on making your site look good rather than helping your business grow.

Now, let’s go into more detail about each ecommerce builder…

Shopify Pros Shopify Cons

Shopify is for serious sellers. It’s a great choice if you have loads of different items to sell, and you want the whole selling process to be a smooth as possible. In short, it’s powerful, and easy to use.

You also have access to outstanding 24/7 customer support, so if you ever need to make some changes – or find yourself in trouble – you can fix things easily.

With Shopify’s mobile app, you can accept payments and manage your online gallery while you’re on the go – ideal for the modern day artist.

Selling your work on Shopify is really easy, and its lowest price plan – costing $29.99 per month – would suit most artistic ambitions.

Wix Ecommerce Pros Wix Ecommerce Cons

We love Wix because it’s so flexible and easy to use, and Wix Ecommerce features are no different. It also has loads of excellent ‘creative arts’ templates to choose from, which can help present your artwork in the best possible light.

As we mentioned earlier, the Wix Art Store is an all-in-one package for showing and selling your art. It comes with social media integration, which lets customers see your items on channels like Facebook and Pinterest, and sends email notifications so you can stay on top of your orders wherever you are.

  • Editing interface is tricky to use at first

BigCommerce is for super serious sellers. This platform focuses on helping big businesses grow even more, and can help you design an artistic empire thanks to its impressive range of built-in features.

Some of the best features for artists include multi-channel selling, which means you can make money from channels like Facebook or Pinterest. You can manage the shipping process really easily, while BigCommerce has recently improved all of its templates to make the designs even more appealing.

With similar pricing plans to Shopify, we recommend starting out on the lowest premium plan, which costs $27.95 per month.

Squarespace Pros Squarespace Cons
  • High quality features
  • Best designed templates
  • Lacks numerous payment options
  • No app store

Squarespace has real quality in its features. However, like we said earlier, it’s best suited to artists looking to sell a few items. If you’re looking to sell more than that, you’re better off with Shopify or BigCommerce.

With no app market, all the sales tools you need for selling your artwork is built-in and ready to go. This means you don’t have to mess around searching for and installing third-party plug-ins, which may appeal to some users. If you’re looking to manage your online gallery in one place while battling a busy schedule, Squarespace is a good solution.

One of the best Squarespace features gives you control over product variants. This means you can sell different colors or variants of items which are different sizes, giving you plenty of flexibility.

Weebly Pros Weebly Cons
  • Easy to use
  • Best value for money
  • Cannot update stock levels
  • No multi-channel selling

You know Weebly is one of the easiest website builders to use, but how does it fare in the world of e-commerce? It does, ahem, Weebly well. Weebly lets you sell up to 10 products on its Starter plan. The platform also comes in as ‘best value for money’ based on our research, which suits the cash strapped artists among us!

We’ve already mentioned the powerful SEO tools you get with Weebly, but how do they help your online gallery?

SEO best practice is good for your website, because it’s like having a really attractive, persuasive, and easy to read sign situated down the road from your store. It grabs people’s attention, and piques their curiosity – especially if they’ve been looking for an art gallery.

How to Choose a Website Builder

There are certain things to consider when choosing a website builder. Luckily for you, we’ve got some handy tips below…

  • Is there lots of design flexibility, and is it easy to make changes?
  • Can you add new pieces of artwork?
  • Do the templates really let your items shine?
  • Do the price plans fit your budget?
  • Is the customer support comprehensive enough?

Don’t forget that each platform offers a free plan or free trial, so there’s no need to worry about credit card commitments.

9 Best Website Builders for Artists: Conclusion

Clearly, website builders have made it easier than ever to display and sell art digitally. Hi Melanie, Thanks so much for your comment. We've tried to choose the most versatile website builders for this post (design being one of several factors we took into account), but the list is by no means exhaustive! I'm glad you're getting on well with Ucraft - it's not a builder I'm super familiar with so will definitely check out these themes. Thanks for the tip! Hannah
