7 Best Resume Website Builders 2021: Create a Killer Online Resume

Our independent research projects and impartial reviews are funded in part by affiliate commissions, at no extra cost to our readers. Learn more

To help your resume make an impact online, we’ve compiled the seven best resume builder websites on the market. On this page you can compare the top resume building sites side-by-side in our comparison chart, and then explore their strengths and weaknesses in more detail in their reviews.

In a competitive job industry, having a well-designed resume is important, but not exactly groundbreaking. Having a resume website, however, is a great way to show off your work and stand out from the crowd – it’s believed only 7 in 100 job seekers currently have one!

And what’s more creating a resume website is a whole lot easier (and cheaper!) than you might think. Here are the best platforms for the job:

7 Best Online Resume Builders

  1. Squarespace Best overall resume website builder
  2. Weebly Affordable and good value
  3. Wix Best for SEO
  4. WordPress.com Cheap, but restrictive
  5. Duda Standout designs, but expensive
  6. Site123 Simple to set up, but limited
  7. WordPress.org Steep learning curve

Squarespace beat every other site in our research, combining sleek, professional designs with powerful features. We’d recommend Squarespace for all kinds of resumes, but especially for those in creative industries.

When it comes to recommending the best platforms, there’s no place for guessing here at WBE. The platforms we recommend go through an extensive research process to generate unique scores, so we can confidently compare them like-for-like.

Having looked at impressive examples of online resume websites, and spoken to some of the people behind them, we were able to gain unique insights into the most important factors for a resume website builder. These factors have been given extra weighting in our ranking:

  • Affordability – You don’t want your resume to break the bank, and you want the option of a month-to-month payment.
  • SEO – It’s helpful if your site can be a tool for recruiters finding you, not just the other way around.
  • Design – Unsurprisingly, a good-looking resume is a top priority.
  • Resume features – Specifically contact forms and scheduling options.

Squarespace

Best overall resume website builder

Outstanding

4.6

out of 5
  • Award-winning templates
  • Powerful resume features
  • No coding skills needed

Free trial available

Paid Plans: $12 - $46 / month

Pros

  • Beautiful designs create stylish resume
  • Built-in SEO tools and contact forms
  • Best resume features for just $12/month

Cons

  • Takes a while to get to grips with
  • Paying monthly bumps up your plan cost
  • Small app store compared to competitors
Read Review

The best resumes are neat, clear, and minimal – qualities that Squarespace’s designs serve up in spades. With a starting price of $12, it’s not the cheapest platform – however, the option to pay monthly means you can choose to only set your site live during months you’re looking for work. We also love how easy it is for potential employers to book a chat with you – it’s a really nice, original touch.

Features

When we analyzed each website builder’s features from the perspective of someone building a resume, Squarespace performed best, with a score of 4.7 out of 5. Squarespace has good in-built features anyway, but these stood out for resumes specifically:

  1. Editable contact form – As well as having a selection of beautiful contact forms to inject straight into your Contact page, Squarespace also offers the ability to book an ‘appointment’, which could be an impressive way to catch the attention of employers
  2. Good SEO – Want to be found via Google? Squarespace has all the features you need to set you up for success – but you may have to dig around to find them
  3. Download option – Upload a PDF resume to your site for easy printing

Its blogging features are also excellent, including social sharing, flexible post display options, and podcasts.

Top tip! Not all templates automatically add social icons to your site navigation. To add (or remove) social icons, hover over the top menu, go to Edit > Elements, then switch the Social Links toggle on or off.

Design

Squarespace’s designs steal the show – it earned 4.5 out of 5 stars in our resume research for design flexibility. The ‘Personal & CV’ category has eight high quality templates ready for you to build an online resume with.

Whether you want a design that’s playful or professional, Squarespace has a sleek, minimal option for you. And with Squarespace version 7.1, it’s easy to add any ‘missing’ elements to your site

Pricing

Squarespace websites have a high-end feel, for a price that’s pretty middle-of-the-road.

If you want your resume site live all year round, then pay annually for the Personal plan ($144/year, equivalent of $12/month). If, however, you just want to pay month-by-month (until you find a job), this jumps up to $16/month.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average amount of time to find a job is 24 weeks, so paying month-by-month seems pretty sensible!

Both $12 and $16/month feel like a small and worthy investment for the quality of the site, and the very opportunity of landing more clients, or a better job.

You can try out any plan in full on a 14 day free trial, and we have an exclusive Squarespace coupon code for our readers which will save you 10% on the cost of any plan.

#2. Weebly

Affordable and Good Value

Weebly

Affordable and good value

Excellent

4.5

out of 5
  • Budget-friendly plans
  • Large app store
  • Drag-and-drop editing

Free plan available

Paid Plans: $6 - $29 / month

Pros

  • Cheap plans offer great value for money
  • Solid features and impressive app store
  • You can switch templates at any time

Cons

  • Themes aren’t as modern as Squarespace’s
  • Lack of creative freedom for non-coders
  • $6/month plan shows adverts on your site
Read Review

Squarespace a little too expensive? Weebly is a far cheaper alternative. The end designs don’t have the same ‘wow’ factor, but its resume features are also strong, and it’s more intuitive to use.

Features

We mentioned Weebly has strong features, so what stands out? Firstly, a bunch of helpful SEO guides to help you find work via Google (a lot more ‘hands on’ support in this area than Squarespace offers). You can upload a PDF, as well as add a contact form, and all these features are built in (and free).

Weebly earned 4.5 out of 5 for features – it’s just altogether very ‘geared up’ for pulling together a smart resume, and getting people to find it.

Design

Weebly’s designs don’t pack the same punch as Squarespace’s, but they’re pretty nice, and there’s a small range of dedicated resume templates which are a great springboard to work off.

People seemed to agree, however, that Weebly was more intuitive to use than Squarespace – of the two, our user testing candidates were more likely to recommend Weebly.

You can switch your website’s template on Weebly at any time without having to start from scratch. This is a great feature for the long term success of your resume website. If you have a career change or decide to follow a different style, it’s important to have this flexibility.

Pricing

Pricing is where Weebly really shines. The Personal plan costs the equivalent of $6/month (when you pay for a year upfront), or $9/month on a month-to-month plan. When we spoke with film director Jonny Dry about his resume-slash-portfolio, built with Weebly, he said:

‘I’ve used Squarespace in the past for other websites I’ve been involved with, and I do think that is the gold standard. However, for me, Weebly came the closest of the other competitors – and at half the price.’

…and we totally agree!

Paid Plans: $14 - $56 / month

Pros

  • Beginner-friendly personalized SEO tools

  • Users were most likely to recommend Wix

Cons

  • Expensive entry plan at $14/month
  • Overwhelming level of creative freedom
  • You can’t switch templates later on
Read Review

We’ve mentioned SEO a couple of times already, but if you want recruiters to find you (e.g. by googling ‘Marketing Executive Chicago’) rather than you finding them, strong SEO is essential – and Wix is the website builder we’d most recommend for the job.

Features

Wix’s SEO Wiz acts like your personal SEO assistant, making personalized recommendations to help you climb Google’s rankings, rather than just giving general guidance and advice.

Other Wix features to set your resume apart include:

  • Over 100 fonts to choose from
  • Contact forms and testimonial boxes
  • Visuals such as image and video backgrounds, galleries and various scroll effects

You can add tons of extra functionality via Wix’s App Market, including social links, contact forms, and FAQ sections – all totally customizable.

Design

Wix has 20 templates tagged as ‘Resume and CV’. Not all of them are great, but there’s a lot more variety; whereas Squarespace really leans towards creatives, those in white collar industries have a much greater choice with Wix.

And it’s much more intuitive when it comes to customizing your design, too – simply click and hold elements to drag them into place. Just be sure to toggle over to the mobile version regularly to make sure everything still displays well across other devices.

Pricing

Wix has a totally free plan, but we wouldn’t recommend this for a resume as it’s not the most professional (you’ll get Wix ads displaying across your site, and can’t connect a custom domain name). The cheapest ad free plan is $14/month when you pay annually, or $18/month paid month-to-month, so comes in a little more expensive than Squarespace, and towards the more expensive end of the platforms in this ranking.

#4. WordPress.com

Cheap, But Restrictive

WordPress.com

Cheap, but restrictive

Very Good

4.1

out of 5
  • Designed for blogging
  • Low prices from $4/month
  • Coding skills are helpful

Free plan available

Paid Plans: $4 - $45 / month

Pros

  • Super cheap ad-free $4/month plan
  • Best blogging features on the market
  • Feature-rich cheap plans are good value

Cons

  • Free themes are dated and clunky to edit
  • Proper customization requires coding
  • Least likely to be recommended by users
Read Review

WordPress.com is WordPress.org’s less popular, but easier to use younger brother. While WordPress.org is a content management system (more on that a little later on), WordPress.com is in a website builder format like the other platforms in this ranking.

You’ll find WordPress.com quite restrictive in terms of design, but coming in at just $4/month, it’s a great low budget option.

Features

WordPress.com comes with the most popular WordPress plugins (the equivalent of apps) all installed and ready to go. Some notable ones include:

  • Essential SEO
  • Security
  • Form builder (for contact forms)
  • Advanced galleries

Both types of WordPress were designed primarily for blogs, and come equipped with lots of features to support this (comments, archives etc.). If you want to add a blog to your site, this could be a sweet combo.

All in all, WordPress.com is pretty feature-rich – especially given the very low price point – and scored an impressive 4.1 out of 5 in our research.

Design

Design is WordPress.com’s weakest area. The templates you can pick up for free from the theme directory can look a little dated, and making even basic changes can prove frustrating – let alone trying to play around with the structure of a page. WordPress scored poorly for ease of use for this reason.

Pricing

WordPress.com is a great deal. For a resume, WordPress.com’s Personal plan will work just fine, and costs just $4/month.

#5. Duda

Standout Designs, But Expensive

Duda

Standout designs, but expensive

Good

3.8

out of 5
  • Stunning template choices
  • Designed for agencies
  • Business-tailored tools

Free trial available

Paid Plans: $14 - $59 / month

Pros

  • Good for merging resumes and portfolios
  • Sleek designs are easy to customize
  • Out-the-box features such as widgets

Cons

  • No specific template designs for resumes
  • Tools aimed at portfolios and agencies
  • Too pricey and advanced for most resumes
Read Review

Duda is a really cool platform, but is down in fifth place largely because it’s designed primarily for agencies, and will prove overkill for most people wanting to put together a resume. If you’re branching out into more of a portfolio, it could work really nicely – but it is a little on the expensive side.

Features

Duda’s features are geared up more for supporting small businesses than resume sites, so it scored only 3.4 out of 5 in this area. Marketing and analytics make up a lot of the small selection of apps on offer, and these are things you’re unlikely to need for a resume. That said, the resume basics – ability to add downloadable PDFs, contact forms etc. – are all in place.

Design

Duda’s designs are a real selling point, combining some of Squarespace’s sleek aesthetic with the kind of ease of use you get with Wix, and other drag-and-drop builders. But again, there aren’t really any designs suitable for just your basic resume – they’re more of a portfolio feel.

Pricing

Duda comes out the most expensive platform in this ranking, which makes sense considering it’s more geared towards business sites. Still, the damage isn’t too bad at all – the Basic plan comes in at $14/month (billed annually), or $19/month (if you pay month to month).

#6. Site123

Simple to Set Up, But Limited

Site123

Simple to set up, but limited

Good

3.7

out of 5
  • Quick, automated setup
  • Basic designs and tools
  • Three resume templates

Free plan available

Paid Plans: $12.8 - $41 / month

Pros

  • Quickest way to build a resume website
  • Artificial design creates a site for you
  • Simple and affordable to build with

Cons

  • Only offers basic SEO and resume tools
  • Extremely limited customization
  • Small range of dated looking templates
Read Review

Site123 offers a very quick and very simple way to create an online resume. But if Duda is ‘overkill’ for building a straightforward resume, Site123 is ‘underkill’ – it’s simple and affordable, but lacks the depth of features/sleek design of other platforms, which is why it’s down in sixth position.

Features

Site123’s features are pretty basic in comparison to other platforms. Contact forms, for example, do exist, but are hard to customize. And while the SEO basics are covered, you can’t dig into the more advanced stuff. It’s a common theme.

Design

Site123 has three templates for resumes. They’re okay, but they do look a little outdated. And while it’s easy to add your own text and images to your Site123 website, it’s not easy to adjust the design itself.

Targeted at people who just want a simple way to get a site live, ‘ease of use’ is a Site123 strong point (4 out of 5 stars), but design flexibility… not so much (2.9 out of 5 stars).

Pricing

Pricing is another low point for Site123. The cheapest paid plan (there’s a free one, but we wouldn’t recommend it) comes in at $12.80/month (paid annually) or $19/month (paid three months at a time), with no option to pay monthly. At this price point, Squarespace will be a better option for pretty much everyone!

#7. WordPress.org

Steep Learning Curve

WordPress.org

Steep learning curve

Okay

3.4

out of 5
  • Open-source platform
  • Coding skills are useful
  • Total creative freedom

Free plan available

Paid Plans: $2.95 - $5.45 / month

Pros

  • Super powerful, flexible platform
  • Endless customization options
  • You have full control over everything

Cons

  • Steep learning curve requires patience
  • Various costs to budget and pay for
  • Edits can be tricky – coding skills help
Read Review

WordPress.org is a slightly different kettle of fish. It’s a content management system, rather than a website builder. This means you need to bring different elements together, and pay for them separately (rather than an ‘all in’ website builder price).

With a bit of patience, a WordPress.org site can actually be a very cost-effective way to have a resume ticking along in the background. But for those after a seamless experience, sleek design, or month-to-month payment, this isn’t the platform for the job.

Features

WordPress.org has unlimited scope for additional features, thanks to a fully stocked plugin directory that anyone can contribute to (a plugin serves the same purpose as an app for a website builder).

There are both paid and free plugins available, but make sure you keep an eye on the reviews – the fact that anyone can upload a plugin to the directory isn’t always a good thing, so keep an eye on the quality!

Design

WordPress.org has a free theme directory, including 38 themes tagged as suitable for resumes. While some of these have more of an agency feel, some really nail the ‘simple resume’ criteria, and kind of look more like a PDF than a website.

Whichever theme you choose, don’t expect layout/design changes to be easy – in fact, most will require basic knowledge of HTML or CSS.

Pricing

There can be a lot of costs associated with a WordPress.org site, but if you strip it down to the bare minimum, you can get away with paying only for a domain name and web hosting.

A domain name will cost $10 to $20 dollars per year, and you can pick up cheap shared hosting for as little as $0.90/month (although this cost relates to a minimum two year contract, and will quickly ramp up if you opt to pay month-to month). We recommend using Bluehost to power your WordPress website (it is our top-rated WordPress host after all), with plans starting from $2.95/month (paid annually).

Other Online Resume Builder Options

In this post, we’ve focused on online resume builder tools which help you build a resume website. There are three key reasons for this.

Why We Recommend Building a Resume Website

1. They help you stand out

Trying to get a job can be a frustrating process, knowing that you’re well-qualified for a role, but need to stand out from the hundreds of other resumes that have been submitted.

A resume website is a surefire way to help you stand out from the crowd, with Weebly estimating that only 7 in 100 job seekers have a resume website. This can be especially helpful if you’re applying for a role involving creative or digital skills – here’s tangible evidence of what you can put together!

2. They help you get found

Not only do resume websites help you stand out when applying for jobs, but they help recruiters actually come to you. With good SEO, you can be found by profession and location – this means you could continue to receive opportunities, even when you aren’t looking for them.

3. They help you display your work

If you choose to develop your resume into more of a portfolio, or increase your profile with a blog, you have these options with a resume website.

Online Resume Builders (for PDF Resumes)

If you are only looking for a tool to craft a stylish PDF resume, here are our top six recommendations:

In an ideal world, a stylish PDF and sleek resume website is a winning combo, so why not do both?

Best Resume Builder Websites: Summary

In this post, we’ve guided you through the best website builders for online resumes, and demonstrated why we think a resume website is a worthwhile venture for your job hunt. Here’s a recap of our top seven platforms:

7 Best Online Resume Builders

  1. Squarespace Best overall resume website builder
  2. Weebly Affordable and good value
  3. Wix Best for SEO
  4. WordPress.com Cheap, but restrictive
  5. Duda Standout designs, but expensive
  6. Site123 Simple to set up, but limited
  7. WordPress.org Steep learning curve

If you’re in doubt, remember Squarespace is a failsafe option and our top recommendation, while Weebly comes in at a close (and slightly more affordable) second place. But if any other platform caught your eye for a specific design or winning feature combo, go for it!

FAQs

It’s a personal website that tells employers everything they need to know about you and your employment history, including your experience, skills, and interests. It’s a great way to promote yourself and stand out from the thousands of other applicants all applying for that same dream job as you.

Wix and Weebly have free plans, however, your resume will have adverts all over it, and you won’t be able to connect a custom domain. This can throw the professionalism of your online resume into question, so it’s definitely worth upgrading.

Most resume builder websites are aimed at people who don’t know how to code or have a degree in web design. Squarespace has incredibly high quality designs and gives you lots of creative freedom. Wix and Weebly have drag-and-drop editors which are beginner-friendly, but still create stylish resumes.

Have a browse through its templates and pick a design you like. You can then customize the template to showcase your skills, experience and interests, and add a variety of features like social links. Then just hit publish and it will be ready for recruiters to find on the web.

You don’t have to, but we highly recommend it. Without a custom domain, your URL will be long  and complicated, combined with the website builder’s address. For example: www.your-name-here.wixsite.com/your-resume-website. This makes it difficult to remember, and employers might not take your website seriously.

As with a physical resume, there’s no hard and fast rule determining the length of an online resume. Don’t be tempted to make it longer just because your website builder allows it! You’ll want your resume to be equivalent to one page if you are just starting out in your career, and it can grow alongside your experience: A two-page resume for a decade-long career makes sense. If it’s six pages, you’ve gone too far!

An online resume can easily include multimedia options, from links to your online work, social media, or blog, to videos and photo galleries that can show your abilities in action. Consider what media or downloads will improve your resume, and make sure that your online resume builder of choice supports them. Still, don’t go overboard: Simple is often better.
