Squarespace is a website builder known for creating stunning, mobile responsive websites. It is popular among photographers and artists because of its affordable monthly premium plans and beautiful, design-conscious templates.

In our research, Squarespace shone out as the best all-around choice. It performed especially well for its features and designs, combining high quality tools and professionally-designed templates. Its features are all built in-house, guaranteeing quality.

Squarespace didn’t score so well for ease of use – the drawback of such power is a slightly challenging editor. Still, you don’t need coding skills or tech experience, just a bit of time and confidence!

Squarespace is the number one platform to help you create a professional-looking portfolio website. The templates are crisp, clean, and full of white-space that give your portfolio a very high-end feel and can really elevate you above your peers.

Templates are also mobile-responsive to ensure your work looks great whenever and wherever it is viewed.

Take the ‘Avenue’ template below, which puts your creative work front and centre, while keeping the page clear of any unnecessary content.

This keeps your visitors engaged in the work you have created and quickly shows what your website is about – it’s your own private gallery and so should look like one!

squarespace portfolio template best website builder
Squarespace’s portfolio templates offer all sorts of eye-catching display options for your work, including grids (above), image mosaics, and full screen hero images

Having an attractive and professional website design is important if you want to make a strong first impression and start getting business leads through your portfolio.

But getting people to contact you is next to impossible if you can’t be found online, so it’s reassuring that Squarespace makes it easy to tag your content correctly to ensure your pages are found by search engines.

In-depth on-site guides also explain how to optimize each part of your portfolio in order to improve your online visibility – essential to drum up traffic and gain some potential new clients.

Pros Cons
The templates on Squarespace are stunning, regarded by many as the best in the industry. They’re particularly good for creative needs — portfolios included. Squarespace doesn’t have a free plan, but its prices are pretty competitive. It’s a tad more expensive than some of its competitors, like Weebly, so isn’t the cheapest option on the market. But it’s still an affordable choice.
Squarespace tries to provide in-house solutions of all its key features. You can really feel the difference compared to the lucky draw that plugins can be. The learning curve on Squarespace is a little steep by website builder standards. Total tech-phobes would be better served by platforms like GoDaddy or SiteBuilder.

These guides include both text and video, which is really helpful for different types of learners. For me, I learn best by watching and repeating, but you may process information better by reading a text explanation instead. Thankfully, Squarespace caters for us both!

Adding pages to your portfolio website is quick and easy, so it’s painless to add a blog and start creating fresh content for visitors to read and Google to index (which is the term used to describe how Google sorts your site among all the others it crawls) – this is a win-win situation that should attract more visitors and keep them browsing your work for longer.

Squarespace’s Pricing: $12+

Squarespace’s plans start at $12 per month. This gives you a great range of features, including unlimited storage and bandwidth (perfect for image-heavy portfolios), which is more than you get on Wix’s cheapest $13 per month plan!

There’s also ecommerce plans starting from $26 in case you want to sell artwork directly through your portfolio – a potentially decent money spinner if you can grow your traffic.

Whichever plan you choose, you always start off on Squarespace’s 14-day free trial so you have time to decide if it’s right for you.

While Squarespace isn’t quite as user-friendly as some other builders, such as Wix and Weebly, it’s still pretty easy to get to grips with.

In-depth tutorial videos and help guides smooth over any issues you may encounter and the 24/7 customer support means problems get solved rapidly – so you’re not hanging around when you’ve got better things to be doing.

Editing is smooth and intuitive, with everything driven from a menu bar rather than Wix’s floating toolkit, for example.

For us, Squarespace is an ideal portfolio website builder if you are after a website that looks stunning and has a professional, high-end feel to it. The editor is fairly easy to use, so you can quickly design a portfolio website to your liking, while the SEO guides will help you to get found by search engines (and hopefully lead to some new clients).

Pssssst – Weebly Cyber Week Deal!

Just to let you know, we’ve spotted that Weebly is currently offering 35% off all websites and online stores for Cyber Week, making it even more affordable! But hurry – offer ends December 6th 2019.

Weebly is one of the easiest and most affordable portfolio website builders, making it a great choice if you are looking for a simple portfolio building experience.

Weebly received one of the highest scores for both features and value for money in our research. That’s because it provides a large range of features even on its low-cost plans, meaning you get more for your money. It fell down in help and support, with phone support only available on more expensive plans.

Weebly’s template designs have improved over recent months and although they aren’t quite as eye-catching as Squarespace, they offer a simplicity you will struggle to find elsewhere.

weebly portfoli template best website builder
Weebly’s templates keep things simple - helping you create a great-looking portfolio quickly and easily, without wasting time fiddling with every little on page detail

Clean and basic, Weebly’s designs are mobile responsive and great for simple portfolios, but if you want something a little more stand-out then it’s worth considering a third party template.

There are several online outlets that specialize in creating fancy templates for Weebly, which is a great way of keeping the building process simple but ending up with a really striking website.

Pros Cons
Weebly hits a great balance between ease of use and personalization. Want to fill in a preset template? You can do that. Want to radically change a template to give your portfolio a unique pop? You can do that too. Weebly has a boat load of apps, but many of them require a premium plan. Be sure you’ll use the features before taking that step.
Square’s recent acquisition of Weebly means you can rely on the builder’s ecommerce functionality getting stronger. Something to keep in mind if you want to monetize your portfolio. Unless you’re comfortable coding, you might find Weebly limiting when it comes to customization. Not ideal if you want tons of creative freedom!

Weebly’s Pricing: $5+

One of the best things about Weebly is its affordable prices. Unlike Squarespace, Weebly comes with a free plan,  so you can build and publish without spending a cent. To create a professional portfolio, however, you’ll need a paid plan – the cheapest option with Weebly is the $5 per month Connect plan.

Weebly also has tons of apps which is a great way of scaling your site without having to upgrade your plan. You can simply add any extra features you need one by one, making it a budget-friendly option for growing your portfolio.

Weebly’s Apps

There are several SEO-boosting apps available in Weebly’s App Center and the image uploader encourages you to add meta tags to any artwork you might upload.

Both can help you boost your visibility to search engines like Google, and also help you improve your rankings for relevant keyword searches. Weebly makes it super simple to add and maintain a blog so that you can keep creating fresh content regularly.

Most of Weebly’s apps are only available to premium plan subscribers, so it might be worth investing a few dollars each month to reap the benefits of the premium plan.

You’ll also get access to the unlimited storage and bandwidth needed to support image-heavy portfolios and provide room for growth if needed.

More Information on Weebly:

Weebly Review Our detailed Weebly review tells you everything you need to know about the platform

Weebly Pricing GuideWe explain the costs involved with Weebly’s premium plans

Weebly’s editor is a simple drag and drop editor that lets you move on-page elements as you see fit –  ideal for creatives.

Weebly’s editor also includes an in-built form editor, making it simple to add a form and encourage people to contact you directly through your website.

We recommend Weebly for small, simple portfolios or for anyone that wants to build a portfolio website quickly and cheaply. Editing is super simple so you don’t need to worry about any learning curve at all. The SEO options are good and cover the essentials, while a premium plan will grant you access to additional SEO-boosting apps, ensuring you get found by fans and clients in search engines.

Wix is an easy-to-use and versatile website builder. It has a user-friendly editor that helps you create a beautiful portfolio website quickly, and is very affordable. It comes with great support for SEO beginners too, making it easy to grow your audience.

Wix is a great platform to create your portfolio website on. It provides more than 500 templates, of which 40 are design-focused and 17 are made  for portfolios, such as ‘3D Designer Portfolio’ below.

wix portfolio template best website builder
Wix templates are extremely eye-catching and make it easy for you to create a beautiful portfolio website quickly

Working from templates is a great way of quickly creating a professional and eye-catching portfolio website. All you need to do is find a design you like with galleries for your work, switch out the content and you’re good to publish – it couldn’t be easier!

In fact, in our research Wix received an impressive 5 stars out of 5 for its customer score, and 4.3 out of 5 stars for ease of use, making it one of the most beginner-friendly builders out there.

Pros Cons
Wix offers excellent creative control for those who want to put their stamp on the portfolio design. The drag and drop builder means if you can imagine it, you can do it. You can’t change between templates. If you decide you want to redesign your portfolio you’ll have to rebuild it from scratch.
All sites made on Wix are automatically optimized to work across devices, looking equally sharp on phones and laptops. The extent of creative control can be overwhelming for some. If you want a simple portfolio live quickly Wix may not be the best fit.

One of the best ways Wix helps you build a successful portfolio is by making SEO as easy as possible. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and is important for getting your site found on Google.

SEO can be daunting for beginners, but Wix has helpful guides and even an SEO Wiz to create a personalized, step-by-step guide for you to follow. This is a fantastic example of how Wix goes above and beyond to help your site succeed.

When you’re actually building your site, hover-over tooltips are on hand to explain what features do, while dragging elements and dropping them wherever you think works makes designing your portfolio incredibly simple.

No wonder Wix scored full marks for help and support in our research!

Drag and drop editing also makes it easy to change your layout or remove things at a later date if you don’t think something’s working – don’t like that particular gallery style? Just delete it or change the appearance settings!

More Information on Wix:

Wix ReviewIf you’re looking for more information on Wix then this is a great place to start.

Wix Pricing GuideWe take a closer look at the costs of each Wix premium plan.

Wix lets you add a blog with a click of a button, ideal for content marketing and for sharing your expertise and updates with fans. Keeping a blog is also a great way to create fresh content for Google to crawl (which is the term used to describe how Google reads your website content and sorts it) and potentially boost your site’s rankings, too.

Wix gives you the option to add meta tags and meta data to your images and pages to boost your online visibility. This can increase the likelihood of new clients finding your portfolio and getting in touch about potential opportunities, and for this reason alone it’s worth considering a paid premium plan in order to make a better first impression.

Wix’s Pricing: $13+

Wix offers a free plan, which is a great starting point – but for anyone hoping to make a memorable impression, it’s really worth considering spending a little bit of money to push your portfolio to the next level.

Wix’s paid plans start at $13 per month. Paid plans let you use a custom domain name (or website address – essentially your portfolio website’s postcode) and removes all adverts too – letting visitors focus on the work you want to show off!

You’ll get up to 20GB of storage and unlimited bandwidth (the data used to power your website online) on all paid premium plans. This is ideal if you’re an artist, graphic designer or work in a visual medium as it means you don’t have to worry about large file sizes draining your resources.

With premium plans you also gain access to more templates, more tools and more apps from the Wix App Store – where you can find all sorts of cool apps that cover things like digital marketing, extra design styles and all sorts of interesting features for your online portfolio.

If you want an affordable, unique and attention-grabbing portfolio, Wix is definitely worth considering. It’s easy to use and provides you with more options for showing off your work than nearly any other website builder. The extra SEO assistance also makes it the perfect builder if you’re looking to drive a lot of traffic to your site.

Duda is a website builder that comes with super stylish designs for an ultra sleek portfolio. It lends a creative helping hand, providing professionally designed templates you can customize to a certain extent. It’s a little on the pricey side, but comes packed with features.

Duda is an ideal choice for anyone who wants a stunning portfolio without the responsibility of full creative control over your site. You get over 90 templates to choose from, all of which are clean, simply, and stylish.

Your site’s design is very dependent on the template you choose – unlike Wix, for example, you can’t totally redesign your layout, so make sure you pick a template you like. All templates are totally mobile responsive, so your work will look its best on smartphones and tablets as well as on desktop.

duda portfolio builder templates
Duda has over 90 templates, all of which are modern, attractive, and easy to customize.

Originally, Duda was created to make web design easier for agencies and freelancers, but its easy-to-use platform means it can be  used by anyone wanting a professional-looking website.

This focus on web design means you get a ton of features alongside stylish designs. Here’s a look at just some of Duda’s features:

  • 55+ languages for multi-language sites
  • Customizable blog layouts
  • Ecommerce tools
  • Widgets
  • On-site comments
  • CSS and HTML editing options
  • Widget builder
  • Mobile editor for on-the-go management
  • Photo editor
  • Free image library

From blogging to ecommerce, to creating multi-language websites and more, Duda has an impressive list of features for you to arm your portfolio with.

One of the most interesting features offered by Duda is its widgets. Widgets are like apps – they add extra function to your website!

You can choose from existing widgets such as popups, contact forms, click to call buttons, coupons, reservations, menus, and more. Or, you can build your own widget for a more custom service!

Pros Cons
Creative control is guided in template limits, making it easy to enter in your own content and be done! Ideal if you don’t want the fuss of designing your own layouts. Expensive pricing plans make this a less budget-friendly option. Prices start at $14 per month (billed annually) with no free plan.
Offers incredible inhouse widgets and apps to lend power to your portfolio and create personalized services for your site. This can be especially useful if you’re accepting bookings, enquiries, or running events. Less creative freedom than other builders, so if you want ultimate creative control this simply isn’t the builder for you.
User-friendly and simple designs make it easy to create a stylish website. Basic SEO tools means you’ll face more of a challenge to get your portfolio found online.

Duda’s strengths really lie in its designs, and this shone through in our research – it received 4.9 stars out of 5 for design flexibility, making it the highest scoring builder in this category!

It fell down when it came to value for money, though. Duda’s attractive designs and fancy features are reflected in its price plans. Starting at $14 per month, it’s one of the most expensive builders on our list.

Duda’s Pricing: $14+

Duda has three price plans:

  • Basic: $14 per month (billed annually)
  • Team: $22 per month (billed annually)
  • Agency: $74 per month (billed annually)

The Basic plan includes multi-language options, HTTPS encryption, and lets you build one website. You only have access to email support on this plan, which is less than ideal.

The Team plan us the only one that offers a free 14-day trial. This is a good way to try out its more advanced features, but is a little frustrating if your budget doesn’t stretch to $22 per month.

For these reasons, Duda only scored 1.6 stars out of 5 for value for money. It goes without saying that this is not the best portfolio builder to choose if you’re on a tight budget and want real bang for your buck.

That said, if you’re looking to build several different portfolios, the Agency plan might be a good option, as this lets you build up to eight websites for $74 per month (billed annually).

Overall, Duda is a great if you value design over value for money, and don’t mind paying for its modern templates and vast range of features.

GoDaddy might be better known as the place to go to secure a domain name, but also offers a surprisingly decent website building toolset. It’s a good platform for creating a basic and functional portfolio, but isn’t anywhere near as comprehensive as Wix or Squarespace when it comes to design options…

Pros Cons
Simple to use with 24/7 customer support, GoDaddy is a safe, reliable portfolio option. Really quite limited when it comes to design, especially when compared to style merchants like Squarespace or Duda.
All-in-one convenience. With GoDaddy you can take care of your domain name, hosting, and portfolio all in one place. Features aren’t as glossy or well-developed as most of its competitors. GoDaddy is functional, but not much more than that.

The interface is user-friendly and efficient, while the ‘drag and drop’ editor lets you move images/text/etc around the page as you see fit – so there’s no learning curve to worry about.

Our favorite thing about GoDaddy is its use of Artificial Design Intelligence (ADI).

With GoDaddy ADI, you’re prompted to enter basic information about your site, for example what it’s called, whether it’s a portfolio, if you need an online store, and so on.

From your answers, GoDaddy then automatically creates a personalized website for you!

You can pick the theme you like the best, change the color scheme, replace images, add pages, and make it totally your own – but GoDaddy gives you a real head start by creating the basics for you. You don’t have to build from scratch, saving you time.

This makes GoDaddy the fastest builder you can choose to create your portfolio – setup takes mere minutes, and even with editing and uploading your own content, you can have a site live in under an hour!

This smooth building experience is reflected in GoDaddy’s customer score – in testing, it received an impressive 4.8 stars out of 5 from our users. It’s not quite so impressive when it comes to features or support, sitting comfortably in the middle of the pack.

godaddy portfolio template best website builder
GoDaddy’s templates are all mobile responsive, but are tailored toward simple, functional portfolios. If you want to really stand out, it’s worth considering another platform like Squarespace

GoDaddy offers more than 300 professionally-designed templates with numerous portfolio-specific designs options available to use as a jumping off point. It also helps you integrate your social media accounts to your portfolio website, which can help you raise your profile and grow your audience.

More Information on GoDaddy:

GoDaddy Website Builder Review – Our in-depth breakdown of its strengths and weaknesses

A big selling point for GoDaddy is the 24/7/365 support available to customers – and we can confirm that this is very reliable from our own experience!

GoDaddy’s Pricing: $10+

GoDaddy’s monthly plans are really reasonable, too. For a portfolio website, you’re looking at around $10 per month.

GoDaddy has four paid plans ranging from $10 to $25 per month when billed annually. For a professional portfolio you’ll likely need the $15 per month Standard plan, as it’s the cheapest plan to include SEO. All plans come with a generous one-month free trial.

Strikingly is a simple website that aims to make it easy for anyone and everyone to create a website. This welcoming philosophy is reflected in its beginner-friendly editor and helpful support resources.

Strikingly is a simple website builder that comes with a free plan, basic features, and fairly flexible designs. Its simplicity makes it easy to use, but can also make it quick to outgrow as your confidence and portfolio grow.

If you’re looking to build for free, you should know that Strikingly comes with a free plan, but that this only allows you to build one-page websites. This doesn’t seem the most obvious choice for a portfolio website, but there are some very stylish examples you can use for inspiration!

strikingly portfolio builder template examples
You can browse Strikingly’s template page for inspiration and examples of other portfolio sites created with this simple builder

So, how did Strikingly perform in our testing, and what’s its main strength?

In a nutshell –  Strikingly is a simple but stylish website builder. Its focus on accessibility makes it a joy for tech-phobes, but can make it feel limiting to anyone with more experience.

If you have big dreams for your portfolio, you’ll probably hit a ceiling with Strikingly before too long.

That said, it comes with great blogging tools, flexible designs, and offers great value for money. You can even add a small store to your portfolio if you want to sell a few products through your site.

Pros Cons
Fantastic help and support makes this builder especially suitable for beginners. Limited creative control can become frustrating as your confidence grows, or if you want total creative freedom over your design.
Great blogging tools means you can easily combine your work with regular blog posts to engage visitors. One page websites can be stylish, but aren’t ideal for large or complex portfolios.
Super beginner-friendly and accessible for anyone, no matter your experience. Free up your time for more artistic ventures! One page websites can be stylish, but aren’t ideal for large or complex portfolios.

Where Strikingly really impressed us in our research was with its help and support.

24/7 live chat, helpful starter videos, articles, an idea forum, plus the option to submit a message to Strikingly support staff, all add up to make Strikingly the best builder for help and support on the market.

When we tried out Strikingly’s live chat support, our pricing query was read and replied to within one minute – that’s pretty impressive! On top of that, the ‘Happiness Officer’ who replied was helpful, friendly, and answered our question straight away.

strikingly portfolio builder live chat
Strikingly’s live chat support is speedy and helpful, and the Happiness Officer answered our questions straight away.

Where Strikingly didn’t do so well is features – it only scored 2.3 stars out of 5 for this area.

Strikingly has a fairly reasonable range of basic features – but compared to the offerings of other builders such as Squarespace, Strikingly appears pretty limited and basic.

If you want a small and simple portfolio to showcase your work, it’ll do the job. If you want to grow your online presence and build a business through your portfolio website, you won’t find Strikingly very scalable.

To get the most out of Strikingly, you’ll need a paid plan.

For more information on Strikingly’s features, plans, and templates, check out our in-depth Strikingly Review.

Strikingly’s Pricing: $8+

Strikingly scored strongly when it came to value for money, receiving a solid 3.7 out of 5 stars. It has a pretty generous free plan that you can stay on for as long as you like, and its paid plans are pretty affordable.

There are three paid plans to choose from:

  • Limited: $8 per month (billed annually)
  • Pro: $16 per month (billed annually)
  • VIP: $49 per month (billed annually)

To build a multi-page website you’ll need at least the $16 per month Pro plan, which is a shame as other builders let you do this on their cheapest plans. On the whole though, Strikingly’s cheaper plans offer great value for money and provide a low cost way of adding a couple of products to your portfolio.

WordPress.com is a more user-friendly version of the open-source platform WordPress.org. The difference is that you don’t need to find hosting or security for WordPress.com – you can just sign up for free and begin building. Simple!

However, it’s worth saying straight away that WordPress.com is built primarily for blogging. When you try to create other types of site, it gets challenging pretty quickly.

That’s why WordPress.com only scored 3.2 out of 5 stars for ease of use in our testing, and received the lowest customer score.

With that said, however, WordPress.com does have merits for the right type of user. If you’re willing to take on its blogging-heavy templates, you’ll find a packed list of features and affordable prices.

Despite focusing mostly on blogging, WordPress.com does come with 61 specialized Portfolio themes for you to choose from. Out of those, 11 are free to use, and all of them are mobile-friendly.

wordpress.com portfolio builder
WordPress.com has hundreds of themes for you to choose from, including 61 portfolio themes in a range of different styles.

Some themes are more stylish than others, so take your time when picking the one you want – it’s a good idea to preview the theme by clicking the ‘Open Live Demo’ button. This shows you what the theme looks like and lets you click through the different pages to get the full picture.

Pros Cons
An abundance of features makes this a tempting choice. From blogging to SEO and beyond, there’s a tool for every need. Not very beginner-friendly, so you’ll need time, confidence, and patience to get the most out of this builder.
Sensible prices mean you get real bang for your buck, and offer a solution for all budget types. Received the lowest customer score in our user testing.
Best choice if you want to combine a blog with your portfolio, as blogging is WordPress.com’s main purpose. Templates and features are quite blogging focused, meaning they’re not always so visual as other builders’ designs.

Customizing your theme on WordPress.com isn’t nearly as easy as the other builders on our list. It doesn’t use drag-and-drop; instead you edit content and design separately.

To really get the most out of WordPress.com you’ll also need to be up for some coding.

WordPress.com does try to help you out, providing a checklist and helpful prompts to guide you as you build. But it lacks the speed and ease of builders like GoDaddy and Wix, so be ready for this and set enough time aside to get to grips with WordPress.com.

The truth is, our users struggled to master WordPress.com and most of them didn’t particularly enjoy using it.

Okay, you might be thinking, so why have you included it in the list of best portfolio website builders?

Well, WordPress.com is a powerful, flexible, and popular platform, and if you want to combine a blog with your portfolio, you won’t find better blogging tools anywhere on the market.

Its SEO tools are particularly appealing, too. WordPress.com does 80-90% of the work for you, with built-in SEO mechanics taking care of the technical bits.

Another positive of WordPress.com as a portfolio website builder is its price plans. Like Weebly, Wix, and Strikingly, it comes with a free plan you can stay on forever.

However, to get a professional domain, 24/7 support, or marketing tools, you’ll need a paid plan.

To learn more about WordPress.com and discover whether it’s the builder for you, read our full WordPress.com Review.

WordPresss.com Pricing: $5+

WordPress.com offers some fantastic prices which, combined with its range of features, meant it scored highly for value for money in our research.

It has four paid plans as well as its free plan, ranging from $5 to $45 per month:

  • Personal plan: $5 per month (billed annually)
  • Premium plan: $8 per month (billed annually)
  • Business plan: $25 per month (billed annually)
  • eCommerce plan: $45 per month (billed annually)

The cheapest Personal plan unlocks 24/7 support, while the Premium plan gives you access to marketing and monetization tools such as SEO, advanced social media, and PayPal buttons.

Overall, WordPress.com is a solid choice if you want to include a blog in your portfolio website, but it’s a lot of effort. Other portfolio builders do it better, but WordPress.com has earned its place in this list through powerful features and reasonable price plans.

Jimdo is a fairly straightforward website builder that leans towards ecommerce users. If you are hoping to make a bit of extra money by promoting your work – then Jimdo is a good choice of platform for you. But for a more full-rounded portfolio, you might want to consider a more versatile builder like Squarespace or Weebly.

Jimdo is a good platform for designers, artists and creatives to showcase and promote their work on.

jimdo portfolio template best website builder
Jimdo’s templates are full of big bold pictures to help you grab your audience’s attention

Template choice might be a little limited but the designs are clearly designed with creatives in mind, full of large images and a wide selection of elements to showcase your work in an eye-catching manner.

It’s very easy to combine text and image to add context to projects, show-off designs in a gallery, or even add a shopping cart to encourage purchases.

Pros Cons
Solid hybrid of portfolio builder and ecommerce platform. Very handy if you have plans to monetize your portfolio. Poor template options with limited options to change design and put your stamp on your portfolio’s appearance.
Offers the lowest price point in the industry for making your website advertisement free. Clunky interface. Far from the easiest portfolio builder to use.
Dig deeper into Jimdo’s pros, cons, features, pricing, and more with our detailed Jimdo Review.

Jimdo’s Pricing: $9+

Jimdo has two different sets of price plans – the Jimdo Dolphin range, and the Jimdo Creator range. Jimdo Dolphin is best for beginners, while Jimdo Creator is aimed more at coding experts.

Jimdo Dolphin has a free plan, and four paid plans ranging from $9 to $39 per month (billed annually). The $9 per month Start plan lets you build up to 10 pages – if you need more than that, the next plan up costs $15 per month and lets you build up to 50 pages, which should be more than enough!

Jimdo Creator also has a free plan, but its paid plans are a little more expensive, ranging from $10 to $40 per month.

If your needs aren’t too demanding and you don’t want to spend too much money ( the ad-free plan costs just $9 per month), then Jimdo is a solid choice for anyone looking to make a simple portfolio website.

SITE123 is a fairly basic builder that aims to make your life easier with minimum hassle. If you want to keep things small and manageable without investing much time, SITE123 is a speedy and convenient choice. It’s got a bit of everything, but not much power, so is best for simple portfolios.

Like GoDaddy, SITE123 uses ADI to help design your site and make setting up your portfolio as quick and easy as possible. It’s no surprise that SITE123 received 4 out of 5 stars for ease of use!

SITE123’s templates aren’t as stunning as Squarespace’s, for example, but they’re still attractive. You can filter by industry, such as photography, creative arts, music, and more.

site123 portfolio builder templates
SITE123 has a range of attractive templates, perfect for simple portfolio websites

You can’t change templates once your site is live, so be careful when picking out your template. All designs are mobile responsive, and you can edit the mobile view to make sure your work looks its best on any device.

Pros Cons
Easy to build with because it gives you everything you need right at your fingertips. Lack of creative control – for example you can’t switch templates once your site is live, which limits redesigns.
Excellent live chat support is there to give you a helping hand if you get stuck. Features aren’t very scalable, so it’s not ideal for growing your portfolio long-term.
Very beginner-friendly, and you can build for free! It’s a pretty basic builder, so we don’t recommend it for businesses or big projects.

SITE123 is best for personal portfolios – we wouldn’t recommend it if you’re building a business around your work, as its features aren’t very scalable.

SITE123 aims to give you a well-rounded service, providing all the key features your site will need to get off the ground.

In our research we found that, while these features are helpful, they don’t have much depth to them.

SITE123 doesn’t give you powerful features. So if you want to drive growth, build a complex portfolio, or offer a sophisticated site to your visitors, you’re better off with a portfolio builder featured higher in this article.

Not sure if SITE123 has what you’re looking for? Find out with our expert SITE123 Review.

SITE123’s Pricing: $12.80

SITE123 has two price plans to choose from: the free plan, and the $12.80 per month Premium plan.

To connect a professional domain, remove SITE123 adverts, or sell products through your site, you’ll need the Premium plan.

This is another reason SIT123 isn’t a very scalable option – if you outgrow the Premium plan, you’re a bit stuck! On the other hand, this pricing structure offers a manageable and affordable option for small, personal portfolios.

SITE123 is great for beginners wanting to build a small, simple site. Overall it’s a safe choice that makes your life easy –  as long as you don’t ask too much from it.

The last portfolio website builder in our list is SiteBuilder. This is the easiest to use builder, making it ideal for nervous starters with little technical confidence. However, it lacks key features such as a free trial and advanced SEO, making it a less obvious choice than its competitors.

SiteBuilder’s biggest appeal is that it’s the easiest portfolio builder to use, making it perfect for total beginners who want a headache-free building experience. It scored 4.3 out of 5 stars for ease of use in our testing – a score matched only by Wix!

sitebuilder portfolio web builder
SiteBuilder is the easiest portfolio website builder to use, making it ideal for beginners.

However, SiteBuilder’s customer score wasn’t quite so shining – while Wix went on to receive full marks, SiteBuilder only received 3.9 stars out of 5.

This is because SiteBuilder can’t perform the same way as the top builders when it comes to design and features. Next to Squarespace’s templates and in-house tools, for example, SiteBuilder looks extremely limited and second-rate.

A big drawback of SiteBuilder is that you can’t preview any of its designs before signing up – and there’s no free trial, so you’re committed to a paid plan from day one.

It also lacks good quality SEO tools, meaning that while you’ll find it easy building your site, growing and promoting your portfolio will be an uphill battle.

Pros Cons
Super easy to use, meaning it’s suitable for total beginners and tech-phobes alike! Extremely limited features means you shouldn’t choose this builder if you have big plans for your portfolio.
Ability to sell online if you don’t mind paying for the most expensive plan. No free trial or free plan means you’re committed to a paid plan straight away.
Comes with a pretty solid set of features for you to use. You can’t browse SiteBuilder’s themes before signing up.

Although the best thing about SiteBuilder is undeniably how easy it is to use, it does have other benefits. A free domain with annual plans, blogging and ecommerce options, and analytics features are all available through SiteBuilder.

In fact, SiteBuilder beat both Strikingly and SITE123 for features in our research!

However, across the rest of the board SiteBuilder was consistently below average – for example, it only got 1.2 out of 5 stars for value for money.

SiteBuilder Pricing: $11+

The first thing you should be aware of is that SiteBuilder offers neither a free plan nor a free trial.

When you sign up you have to choose a price plan – there are three, ranging between $11 and $20 per month (billed annually):

  • Pro plan: $11 per month (billed annually)
  • Premium plan: $14 per month (billed annually)
  • eCommerce plan: $20 per month (billed annually)

We recommend choosing the Pro plan to start building your portfolio website, as the Premium plan only adds priority support, and the eCommerce plan is only necessary if you want to sell online.

Just a heads up – the prices displayed on SiteBuilder’s pricing page show the monthly price for the two-year plan because that’s the cheapest option.

Overall, SiteBuilder is a good choice for beginners who want the easiest possible portfolio builder. However, when you want your work to shine and represent you in the best possible way, SiteBuilder might hold you back.

Are You a Total Beginner?

SiteBuilder is the easiest builder to create your portfolio with, despite its flaws. This makes it perfect for first-timers!

Tips for Picking a Portfolio Website Builder

Using a website builder to create your own digital portfolio is becoming an increasingly popular choice for creatives from all sorts of backgrounds, including designers, artists, models, writers, filmmakers and photographers.

Not only is it an easy and affordable way of showing off your talents to the rest of the world, but it’s a great opportunity to drum up new business.

But first up is picking the right website builder for your portfolio. You’ve got a lot of choices, so how do you even know where to start?

To point you in the right direction – and save you a lot of time and effort when shopping around – it’s worth remembering that the very best portfolio website builders will help you:

  • Showcase your work and stand out from the crowd
  • Get found and gain an audience
  • Generate industry contacts and new business opportunities
  • Save money (by being affordable and scalable)
  • Save time and effort (by being easy to use)

Having a portfolio website gives you your own private gallery online in which to show off your talents to the world

Showcase your work and stand out from the crowd

Website builders make it incredibly easy to create your own stunning portfolio website and show off your skills to the world.

Let’s imagine a gallery full of your work and no-one else’s, that was entirely dedicated to showing off your skills and that anyone could visit at any time of time of day. This would give you more exposure, less direct competition, and the chance to show off your work in the best way possible – that sounds pretty great right?

Now what if you could completely design and build that gallery yourself – even if you didn’t know the first thing about construction? Even better, no?!

The best portfolio website builders provide lots of templates specifically designed to help you show off your work in the best way possible.

You’re free to edit and amend the demo content as you see fit – so if you like a certain feature, say a mosaic-style gallery – then simply replace the images in the frames with your own photos or content!

This not only puts your creative work front and center for users, but is incredibly easy and time-saving to do.

As templates are pre-designed with portfolio stores in mind (but are still totally editable too), visitors have no trouble finding the content they’re looking for. Navigation has already been optimized to be simple and straight-forward – whether it’s a gallery or images, links to writing examples, or even a contact page to get in touch with you.

You can even browse app markets (most website builders have one in some form or another) for additional display options or extra features to show-off your work and make it stand out in a crowded marketplace – it’s essentially the same as downloading apps for your smartphone or tablet!

Whether you are an artist, a photographer, a model, or any other kind of creative – you need a platform to showcase and show-off your catalog of work. Portfolio website builders provide you with wide-ranging selections of eye catching templates that help you stand out from the crowd, lots of gallery and display options to make your work pop, apps to add attention-grabbing features and encourage simple navigation so visitors can quickly see everything you have to offer.

Get found and gain an audience

The best portfolio website builders can help boost your online visibility, make it easy to connect your website with social media accounts for cross-platform promotion, and provide marketing tools to help you get the word out to fans and potential clients!

For all the criticisms they receive, website builders actually offer pretty good SEO (search engine optimization) tools that can improve your site to help it rank higher in search engine results pages (SERPs).

It’s easy to add ‘alt tags’ to images and ‘meta data’ to webpages – both of which act like a description of your portfolio website that helps search engines sort and categorize it, similar to a blurb on the back of a book.

Having ‘alt tags’ and ‘meta data’ is essential in order to rank higher and get found by people online.

You can also add a blog very easily to your website through most website builders, which can be a great way to show off your knowledge and promote your creative work.

This is known as content marketing and can also help you rank higher in SERPS because Google scans the content on your page and picks out the words relevant to what someone is searching for.

For example, if you are a photographer and write a lot of blog posts about the types of film you use when shooting landscapes, then you’ll stand a better chance of ranking highly when someone searches for ‘best camera film for landscape photography’.

Maintaining a blog is an easy – yet important – way of creating regular new content for your site and visitors.

There are also marketing tools available to use to further promote your portfolio and spread the word about your creative talents.

Most website builders offer some form of email marketing tool, such as Wix’s ‘Wix Shout’, which are ideal for sending out news updates or for letting your fans know about your next exhibition or show.

You can support these email campaigns with additional marketing apps, such as ‘Traffic Generator’ that can create Google Adwords campaigns for you and drive traffic to your portfolio – a great way to be found by your target market.

You could even download an app to connect your social media feeds with your website.

Imagine syncing your portfolio updates with your instagram account for super-simple, cross-platform marketing that can really build you a dedicated audience!

Platforms like Wix and Squarespace provide several marketing tools to help you push your portfolio to the next level. Create specialized email marketing campaigns to notify subscribers of updates to your portfolio, integrate with social media and show off your work across multiple channels, or even add a blog to show off your knowledge and expertise. People can’t appreciate your work if they don’t know it exists, so take advantage of the marketing tools provided by website builders to promote yourself to fans and potential clients.

Generate industry contacts and new business

As this will be the first time most prospective clients are seeing your work it’s super important that you make a great first impression – just like if it was a job interview.

I know that I (and many friends and colleagues, and I’m sure you too!) have always had more success when making a strong first impression and the same is true for your website.

Whether it’s a job interview or your portfolio website, it pays to create an impression that makes an impact. The portfolio website builders we recommend below are ideal for getting yourself noticed in the best way possible.

Having lots of templates to choose from is a big plus point for anyone building a portfolio website because it gives you a lot of options to choose from when deciding on how to make a great first impression.

User-friendly editors keep website design simple and uncomplicated, so it’s painless to create a specific contact page or add a contact box so that people can easily submit enquiries or reach out to you.

Remember, people like convenience, so if it’s hard to get in touch with you then you could lose out on potentially lucrative business opportunities!

Just imagine how time-saving it would be to do away with cold emails and cold calls in order to try and drum up business – Just add a contact form and let people get in touch with you directly!

Website builders make it easy to add contact pages and forms to your portfolio website so that prospective clients can contact you directly. This does away with the need for you to send cold emails or make stressful cold calls asking for business and so is a huge time-saving opportunity. Add to this SEO boosting apps and features to help your website rank higher and get found in Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) and you’ll be on your way to generating lots of new business!

Save money (by being affordable and scalable)

Using a website builder is a far more affordable option than hiring a professional designer that might set you back thousands of dollars.

Nearly all website builders offer a free plan, which is great if your needs aren’t too demanding.

However, if you want more storage, more templates, or a custom domain (like a personalized website address) then it’s worth considering a paid premium plan.

For the price of a Starbucks Grande Caffe Latte each month (around $5-10) you’ll not only be able to build your own portfolio website, but you won’t even need to worry about things like hosting, storage, and site security as they will all be taken care of!

This is a huge time, effort and money saver as you’d otherwise need to spend time researching, comparing, and paying for it out of your own pocket if working with a designer.

Paid plans also give you more storage space and bandwidth, which are both important in helping your website to grow.

Having more storage lets you add more content to your portfolio to keep users engaged, while bandwidth is the name for the data used to power your website when people visit and is provided by your website builder of choice.

Having more bandwidth means you can support more visitors and higher levels of traffic.

It would take years for you to rack up a bill on a website builder that would match the cost of hiring a website designer, so to my mind it makes much more sense to remove as much financial stress as possible if your budget is tight.

Our recommended portfolio website builders are not only easy to use, they keep things within budget too. Paid monthly premium plans are affordable and work out much cheaper than the on-going costs you’d be stuck with if hiring a costly web designer or developer to create your site from scratch. Paid plans also include hosting, storage and bandwidth – all of which would prove increasingly expensive if you had to sort them all out separately by yourself.

Save time and effort (by being easy to pick up and use)

The drag and drop editors used by website builders makes it incredibly easy for even the biggest technophobe to create stunning, professional-looking website in no time at all.

Nearly all major website builders provide an easy-to-use drag and drop editor that pretty much does what it says on the tin! You select an element such as text or image and then you drag it to where you want it on the page and drop it there – simple.

Drag and drop editors are also known as ‘What You See Is What You Get’ editors (WYSIWYG), which means that any changes you make in the editor will be reflected on your live website.

It’s sort of like when you create a custom birthday card on a site like Moonpig – the card you receive will look exactly like the one you designed.

Drag and drop website building is incredibly easy and doesn’t require you to know anything about coding at all, which does away with fiddly code tweaking and lets you focus on creating a stunning portfolio website.

This is a very time-saving way of working because you’re essentially editing in real-time, so you know exactly how your portfolio will look to visitors.

But for some readers, time may be at even more of a premium and you might not be able to afford a few hours to dedicate to building a portfolio website. In this case, just work with the pre-designed templates and edit as much or as little as you want, then publish it to the web.

For added peace of mind, website builders provide lots of help to keep your building experience running smoothly and ensure you don’t run into trouble.

Among the available support options are Wix’s in-editor tooltips that explain what tools do if you hover over the little question marks, it includes Weebly’s live help chat for efficient problem solving, as well as Squarespace’s in-depth tutorial videos and wide-ranging support guides.

It’s important to have support available when you need it as it helps to solve issues quickly, so you can carry on working and don’t waste time waiting around for an answer.

When you can simply drag and drop your photos or artwork wherever you want, it makes designing a unique portfolio incredibly easy. It also means you don’t need to know how to work with HTML, which means you can create your website quicker. And because your portfolio will look like it does in the editor, it means you can fine-tune your design and know exactly how it will look to your visitors. If you really need to save time – then there’s pre-designed templates for you to edit and publish, simple!

FAQs

What is an online portfolio?

An online portfolio is digital collection of one’s work, usually housed on a website. It makes your work — be it it writing or painting — easily accessible to potential clients and employers. In the digital age online portfolios are an excellent way of showcasing what you’re capable of.

Can I make a portfolio website for free?

Not a good one, no. If you want your own website it’s going to cost a few dollars one way or another. Even if you build your own site from scratch (which many do, especially in the design and development sphere), you’ll still need to dish out a few bucks for web hosting and a domain name.

I’m not sure which portfolio website builder to use. What should I do?

Play around. Most builders offer free trials, so make use of them. If you like the sound of Squarespace, that doesn’t mean you should sign up straight away. Sign up for a trial and see if the platform is right for your needs. If it is, fabulous, sign up. If not, no harm done. You owe it to your work to find the best portfolio builder possible.

+1 for Pixpa. Started with their free trial recently after Squarespace's collab with Unsplash. I already feel that this platform is much more intuitive than others listed. Most importantly, offers almost the same features at lesser price. Yet to explore its full capabilities, after which I'd be able to review better.
