Should you go for an annual plan?

You can see from the table above that there’s a huge amount to be saved by paying for your plan upfront for a year (or more), rather than month to month. We totally get it – signing up to a year can feel intimidating. But the reality is that you’ll probably want your site for at least a year, and in most cases a whole lot longer. If your concern is committing to Wix as a platform, remember:

  • The free plan is perfect for testing out how Wix works, and building a site you like, without paying a cent
  • There’s a 14-day money-back guarantee with all premium plans, so you have two weeks to try the additional features, then change your mind

Wix has a lot of pricing plans, and the amount of choice can be overwhelming. But we’ve used our thorough research process to summarize what you need to know. To start, here’s a quick overview of Wix’s performance in our key research areas (including value for money, where Wix earned an impressive 4.5 stars out of 5).

Wix's Website Plans (Non-Ecommerce)

Wix has four plans for people who just want to build a website, rather than an online store. If you want to build a personal blog, portfolio, or a business site, then one of these plans will be for you – over the last decade, our users and researchers have always rated Wix plans highly.

These plans range from $14/month up to $39/month. Here’s an overview of the key differences between them:

Combo Unlimited Pro VIP
Price/month (paid annually) $14 $18 $23 $39
Price/month (paid monthly) $18 $23 $28 $47
Storage Space 3GB 10GB 20GB 35GB
Video Hours 30 mins 1 hour 2 hours 5 hours
$300 Ad vouchers
Site Booster (SEO) App
Events Calendar App
Professional Logo Design
Customer support 24/7 24/7 24/7 Priority

Storage space relates to the amount of content you can hold on your site (that’s pages, blog posts, images etc.), and still have your site work normally. Your site won’t suddenly get ‘full’ and block you from uploading more, but as you get closer to the limit, you will notice it gets slower, and possibly experiences downtime or times out visitors.

Here’s some context around storage space limits:

  1. This high-res image (not compressed) is 2.3MB, or 0.077% of the Combo plan storage, 0.023% of the Unlimited plan storage, and 0.007% of the VIP plan storage.
  2. The homepage of this Wix-made site is 81.86MB, or 3,73% of the Combo plan storage, 0.82% of the Unlimited plan storage, and 0.23% of the VIP plan storage.
  3. This post is 666.25KB, or 0.022% if the Combo storage, 0.007% of the Unlimited plan storage, and 0.002% of the VIP plan storage.

$300 ad voucher is comprised of:

  • $100 Google Ads (with a $25 purchase)
  • $100 Bing Ads
  • $100 in Local Listings

There are some pretty stringent terms and conditions around this one – you have to purchase an annual Wix plan upfront, and your Google AdWords account must be under 2 weeks old, among others – but this is actually a pretty great perk. If you were already considering paid ads, this is a huge pro for the Unlimited plan and above.

Every Wix customer has access to the Logo Maker, but unless you’re on the Pro or VIP plan, you’ll only be able to download a very low res version. With the Pro and VIP plan, you get around 40 high-res versions in different styles/formats. Your logo design is created using AI (Artificial Intelligence), rather than a professional designer, so calling it a ‘professional’ design is a bit of a stretch. They do come out pretty good, though.

English-speaking customers can request a callback 24/7, but those with the VIP plan’s ‘priority support’ will always be brought to the front of the queue. The same applies for responding to tickets.

Which Plan Is Best For Me?

Combo Plan: $14.00/month

  • Ideal for portfolios, resumes, small blogs, personal sites
  • Great for fuss-free business promotion
  • Far more professional than the free plan
  • A great starter plan
Why Choose the Combo Plan: Naz & Ella

Ella wanted a place online where she could promote her band’s music, videos, and gig dates to fans. Her website, nazandella.com, uses the Combo plan – it offers everything her site currently needs, and the custom domain/lack of Wix advertising makes it look super professional.

Unlimited Plan: $18.00/month

  • SEO app (helps local people find you)
  • Paid ad vouchers (great for testing the water with paid advertising)
  • More storage (faster site)
  • Increased video allowance
  • A worthwhile step up for small businesses and freelancers
Why Choose the Unlimited Plan: Example Case

Indie band The Plug Sockets started out on the Combo plan too, but hit a wall when they wanted to upload a longer video of a gig. Upgrading to the Unlimited plan gives them an hour of video, rather than just 30 minutes. They also unlock extra features they hadn’t previously considered, like the SEO app, which could prove helpful for being discovered for local bookings.

Pro Plan: $23.00/month

  • Free additional features, like the calendar app
  • A leg up with branding and marketing
  • Use of the Wix Logo Maker for rebranding
  • Access Wix Ascend for bespoke marketing support
Why Choose the Pro Plan: Example Case

Jess owns a small coffee shop in the city. It’s quite tucked away, without much footfall, so she’s relying on word of mouth – and performing well on Google – for new business. Upgrading to the Unlimited plan helped with that (the Site Booster App was the perfect assistant for someone with no SEO experience), but she’s not done yet. There are a lot of coffee shops around, and she needs to stand out. She starts running events in the evening, and upgrades to the Pro plan so she can add a calendar of events to the site. She wants to give the coffee shop a bit of a rebrand, and now has access to the Wix Logo Maker to help with that.

VIP Plan: $39.00/month

  • Best for big/popular sites
  • Maximum storage capacity
  • Priority support
  • A bit overpriced for what it is, but worth it if you make money from your site
Why Choose the VIP Plan: Example Case

Michael started a travel blog when he went on exchange to Europe in college. He thought it would be a fun way to keep his family up to date on his travels, but it quickly took off after one of his posts went viral. Now, thousands of people visit his travel guides every day, and he publishes several pieces of new content a month. He upgrades to the VIP plan, as his site is very content-heavy, and he also wants the extra support. At some point in the near future, he’ll probably migrate his site to WordPress (a better option for big blogs).

Wix's Business Plans (Ecommerce)

For those of you wanting to sell products through your website, you’ll need an ecommerce plan. Wix has three ecommerce plans for you to choose from, ranging in price from $23 to $49 per month (billed annually). These prices are impressive compared to the other top ecommerce website builder plans we’ve researched.

Here’s a side-by-side look at Wix’s ecommerce plans, comparing key features:

Business Basic Business Unlimited Business VIP
Price/month (paid annually) $23 $27 $49
Price/month (paid monthly) $28 $33 $56
Transaction fees 0% 0% 0%
Storage space 20GB 35GB 50GB
Subscriptions
Multiple currencies
Sell on marketplace
USPS discounts Up to 60% Up to 70%
Automate sales tax 100 transactions/month 500 transactions/month
Dropshipping Up to 250 products Unlimited products
Product reviews Up to 1000 Up to 3000
$300 Ad vouchers
Customer support 24/7 24/7 Priority

Business Basic Plan: $23/month

  • Best plan for starting with ecommerce
  • Stripped back features, but fine for starting out
  • You’ll want to upgrade to the Unlimited plan (below) as soon as sales start to pick up
Why Choose the Business Basic Plan: Example Case

Sam built his photography portfolio on the Combo plan, and has a large Instagram following on his photography account. He has been getting a lot of messages from people interested in buying his images as prints, so has decided to trial selling his five most popular pictures in a few sizes. He upgrades to the Business Basic plan to build the shop page of his site, and to start taking payments.

Business Unlimited Plan: $27/month

  • Upgrade to this plan once you’re getting steady sales
  • Tools to level up your ecommerce efforts
  • Add product reviews to your site – a huge trust signal
  • Unlock USPS discounts, and automated sales tax calculations (up to 100 transactions)
  • Option to start dropshipping and accepting subscriptions
Why Choose the Business Unlimited Plan: Example Case

Sam’s prints are selling fast, and this is quickly becoming a major revenue stream for him. He upgrades to the Business Unlimited plan – this unlocks pro ecommerce features, like the currency converter (for selling globally) and marketplace integrations (for selling on other platforms, like Etsy). For just $4/month more, this is a quick and cheap way to level-up his store.

Business VIP Plan: $49/month

  • Streamline, refine, grow
  • Upgrade your caps: more online reviews, more transactions with automated sales tax
  • Additional USPS discount
  • A steep price hike, but worth it if you’re making good money

If this plan sounds most suitable for you, and you don’t already have a Wix account, you might want to consider a dedicated ecommerce platform like Shopify instead. In our research and user testing, Shopify earned the title of “best ecommerce platform for large stores” because of its excellent sales features and inventory management – and it’s still an easy builder to use.

Why Choose the Business VIP Plan: Example Case

Sam is now making some pretty serious money from his business, and his site consistently has over 100 transactions a month. His last plan upgrade was all about really levelling his business up, but this time he’s upgrading in order to really streamline processes, and to save time. With the Business VIP plan, he gets priority support (less profit lost when something goes wrong on his site), and automated tax calculations for up to 500 transactions. The extra USPS discount is a helpful bonus, as is the extra storage space – his site feels a little faster now. Yes, it’s a steep price hike – but he’s earning enough to justify it.

Enterprise: $500/month+

This plan is a relatively new Wix addition. It has previously been listed as $500/month, then ‘Custom price’ and is now ‘starting at $500/month’.

Honestly, it’s a bit of an enigma. It’s hard to see what you’d be getting for anywhere near this price, or why it’s worth pursuing as an option. Our advice? If you feel the Business plans above won’t serve your needs, or you’ve outgrown them, it’s time to check out a dedicated ecommerce platform, like Shopify (which we’ve rated best for large stores) or BigCommerce (which we’ve rated best for fast-growing businesses).

You’ve Done Your Research – Know Which Wix Plan You Need?

If you’ve read this far, then you have a good knowledge of Wix’s different pricing plans. And you definitely have a good knowledge of your own website’s needs, so it’s time to…
3

Is the Free Plan Really Free?

Yes. Wix offers a completely free plan, with up to 500MB storage. In many ways, it’s great – there’s no time limit, and you can build and publish your site without paying a cent.

You don’t need any payment details to sign up to Wix’s free plan, either – all you do is create an account with your email address, and you can start building your site.

However, the free plan is not so great in other ways. It provides limited features, and your website will have Wix adverts on each page. There’s also a range of other drawbacks, which we’ll cover below.

5 Things You Should Know About the Free Plan

  1. You can’t use your own domain name
  2. You’ll have Wix adverts displayed on your site
  3. You can’t sell online
  4. You only get limited features, e.g. no access to Google Analytics
  5. You receive basic customer support, e.g. no priority support options

Here’s a demo website that one of our team made with the free Wix plan, which shows some of this in action: https://carnagelucy.wixsite.com/lucyscupcakes

So, do we recommend Wix’s free plan? Well, sort of – but only because it’s free. If you want a successful, professional, or popular website, you will need a better plan than the free version.

The free plan is really only suitable for testing the waters. If you’re serious about your website’s success, and don’t want to spend time or effort trying to figure out how to code, then choosing a paid Wix plan is the easy and cost-effective way to create a site that stands out from the competition.

Wix vs Competitor Pricing

There’s no denying that Wix has changed tact with its pricing over the years, doing away with cheaper plans like the ‘Connect Domain’ option, which used to be around $5/month (and is still available in the UK for £3/month). The Combo plan (Wix’s cheapest paid plan) has increased by around $1/year over the past few years to $14, meaning this is now one of the more expensive ad-free starting plans on the market.

Here’s a quick breakdown of how Wix’s pricing compares with our other top-rated website builders. We’ve included each builder’s cheapest paid plan (in purple) alongside its best value for money plan (in blue):

wix pricing vs competitor pricing

Does being more expensive make Wix a bad option? No. Wix rolls out new features, tech developments and templates pretty regularly. It’s constantly evolving, and good value for money (4.5 out of 5 stars in our research).

If you want to get the most out of Wix, we’d recommend signing up to its $23/month Business Basic plan which gives you access to a wide range of quality tools and features (and is the cheapest plan which allows you to sell online).

Wix Is a Quality Website Builder at a Competitive Price

Do you want to build a site that can grow with you over time, that you won’t have to switch over to a new builder after a few months? Wix’s high-powered features and design flexibility make it an adaptable choice for the long-term.

Any Hidden or Additional Costs?

Beyond paying the monthly subscription fee, there are other Wix costs you should keep in mind:

1. Wix auto-renewal

Not an additional cost, but may be unexpected

This is not exactly an additional charge, but many customers don’t realize that Wix’s subscriptions are set to renew automatically, at the end of your subscription period.

If you don’t want your plan to auto-renew, you can simply turn it off in your settings. Here’s how:

  • Go to Billing and Payments in your Wix account
  • Click Plan Actions
  • Click Cancel Now

Don’t worry – clicking ‘Cancel Now’ doesn’t actually cancel your plan there and then. Instead, it means your plan won’t automatically renew next time your subscription expires.

2. Wix domain name cost (only free for first year of annual plans)

$14.95 to $24.85 per year

Wix domains are free for the first year, after which most domains cost $14.95 per year. More specialized domains can cost up to around $24.85 per year.

If you don’t pay for your domain, then someone else can register that domain name and use it for themselves. Your domain name’s renewal happens automatically, so that you don’t accidentally lose your domain.

Want to find out more?

3. Custom email addresses

$4.08 per month per email address

Wix has partnered up with G Suite (basically Google’s Gmail for Business) to enable you to create custom email addresses directly within your Wix account, meaning you can pay for, set up, and configure your email addresses right inside Wix’s dashboard.

It costs $4.08 per month if you sign up for an annual plan, or $5.00 if you decide to go with a month-to-month plan.

wix pricing mailbox plans
Click to see Wix's email service offerings

Not sure you need a custom email? Think again! 75% of US ecommerce customers say that a professional email is an essential factor in trusting a business. When a generic email address can make 33% of buyers doubt your trustworthiness, paying out for a custom email address is worth it!

4. Add extra for apps

Free to $20+/month per app

While Wix has tons of free apps in the Wix App Market – 55 to be exact – it also has a number of premium apps you can add to your site. Most apps come with both a free and premium version, so you can choose which you want.

Premium apps vary in price, usually ranging between $3 and $20/month per app. Some apps come with a free trial, while others are paid from day one.

You can start on the free version, and then upgrade to the premium app at any time. Wix’s auto-renewal applies to premium apps, so if you don’t want to keep paying for an app, make sure to turn this off in your settings.

5. Wix Ascend (marketing support for small businesses)

$0 – $49 per month

Are you trying to grow a small business or online store? It can be hard to make headway with so much competition, right? Wix has the right tools to help you reach those goals. Wix Ascend is a one-stop shop marketing and customer management suite. It’s a set of business tools that comes built directly into your site, and is designed to help you grow traffic, gain customer insights, boost engagement and conversions, and manage your business.

You can use Wix Ascend for free, and it actually comes pre-installed within your Wix website. However, this gives you limited access to all Ascend business tools – so if you want to remove Ascend branding or unlock more powerful features, you’ll need to upgrade.

Wix Ascend has a free plan, but it's limited. To unlock more features, you need to upgrade to a paid plan.
Did you know? Email scheduling is one of the tools you get with Ascend’s premium plans. According to research, it seems the best day to send emails is on Tuesday, at either 10am or 1pm!

Wix Pricing: FAQs

No! Hosting is included in all of Wix’s plans, including the free plan. You don’t need to worry about any extra costs there, or the effort of finding your own hosting provider, as Wix sorts out everything for you.

The cheapest Wix domains cost $14.95 per year. However, your domain will be free for one year if you choose an annual paid plan! Domain prices do vary, but on the whole Wix domains cost between $14.95 and $24.85 per year.

Yes! You can upgrade easily by going into your Wix account, clicking upgrade, and picking which plan you want to sign up to. Downgrading is just as easy – go to Premium Plans in your Wix account and click on Change Plan. Then, make sure to finish off by clicking Confirm Plan Change.

If you have a personal or business website that doesn’t need to sell anything online, we recommend the Combo plan. At just $11 a month it’s great value for money and provides everything you’ll need to grow your website, such as a free domain and 3GB storage.

Yes! You can choose whether you pay for your Wix plan monthly or yearly, but remember that you won’t have access to the same perks, features and offers if you pay monthly. For example, you won’t get the free domain for a year. Paying monthly is also more expensive than paying for a yearly subscription.

The main thing you should know about is Wix’s auto-renewal, which we discuss in more detail in the article above. You’ll need to turn this off in your account settings if you don’t want Wix to charge you automatically when renewal time rolls around.

Yes! Wix has a free plan you can stay on as long as you like. This is a great way to pick the right plan, as you get access to all the features it has to offer, plus the comfort that if you’re not happy you’ll get your money back.

Yes! All of Wix’s premium plans offer a 14 day money back guarantee, so you can test this platform out without worrying. This means there aren’t any surprises when you sign up with Wix.

Yes, Wix has a discount code! When you enter the code TAKE10 at checkout, you’ll save 10% on any Yearly Premium Plan, apart from Combo and Connect Domain. Wix has great value for money to begin with, but now you can save even more than usual.

No, you can only sell products after you’ve signed up to a Wix premium plan. However, you can start building and designing your store on the free plan, and have it ready to go for when you do decide to upgrade.

Yes, you can transfer your domain to Wix in just a few clicks. When you transfer your domain to Wix, your domain’s contact information and registration payments can all be managed from within your Wix account.

Wix accepts credit card payments from Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, JCB, and Diners. Wix also accepts debit card payments from Visa and MasterCard. You cannot purchase a Premium Plan, domain, mailbox, or third-party app using PayPal.

Yes, Wix costs more than Squarespace – Wix’s cheapest plan costs $13 per month, while Squarespace’s cheapest plan costs $12 per month. That said, Wix has a pretty generous free plan, meaning you can build and publish a website without paying a cent! Squarespace, meanwhile, has a 14-day free trial instead of a free plan.
