HOW TO CHOOSE THE
BEST WEDDING WEBSITE BUILDER?
For many couples, building your own wedding website is becoming increasingly popular – but how do you know you’re getting the biggest bang for your buck?
Aside from being a beautiful keepsake for you and your partner to reminisce over, the best wedding website builders are the platforms that:
- Save you time
- Save you money
- Cut out unnecessary stress + effort
- Help you manage everything from a single online location
- Make wedding planning and logistics easier
We look at each of these benefits and why they’re important below. But if you want to jump straight to a particular point, just click the relevant link in the bullet list above.
1.You will save time
If you hired a professional website designer it would not only be expensive, it would be time-consuming too because the process involves a lot of planning and tweaking in order to align it with your end goal.
However, website builders empower you to take control and create your own dream wedding website – even if you don’t know how to code.
All it takes is few hours of your time, say one evening after work, and before you go to bed you’ve made your own wedding website – no waiting around, no finding a designer, and no expensive bill when it’s finished.
Just think about what you could do with all that time and money you’ve just saved!
2.You will save money
We’ve discussed elsewhere just how costly hiring a professional designer can be (up to the tens of thousands of dollars in some cases!).
As wedding’s are already expensive affairs, using a website builder is a fantastic way for non-technical individuals (like you and me) to build our own wedding websites while avoiding the need to put a serious dent in our budget.
These days most website builders offer a free plan that you can take advantage of, which is good news if your budget is feeling a little tight.
However, it’s also worth considering the premium plans on offer, which range from $5 – $25+ per month.
Paid plans are a worthwhile investment if:
- You want to remove adverts + banners from your website
- You’d like to use your own custom website address (e.g. www.johnandemilywedding.com)
- You don’t want to worry about the hassle of setting up hosting and domains
- You want access to a bigger pool of specialized templates, apps and plugins that you can use to add more functionality to your wedding website (e.g. guest book, maps, photo upload, send digital invites, etc)
A monthly fee may seem like a steep investment, but compared to the cost of hiring a designer to build a website from scratch, paying for hosting and a domain, then potentially hiring a developer to create custom features – let’s just say your budget will be thanking you for using a website builder.
Heck, the money you save by not hiring a professional could just as easily pay for a few more bottles of bubbly at the reception!
3.You will save on effort
There’s no point in building your dream wedding website if you need to learn a bunch of new skills to get going, right?
Fortunately, website builders are becoming easier and easier to use. This not only saves you time in the long-run, but also means you don’t need to commit as much time and effort to figuring out what all the buttons do or learning any new skills, like coding.
The very best wedding website builders make life as easy as possible for you by having a “drag & drop” editor that allows you to literally drag on-page elements like text and images anywhere you want on your website.
Let’s not forget that hiring a designer to build your website can take a lot of time and patience to get right – so, I think you’ll agree that having something as easy and convenient to use as a website builder is a real life saver for any couple that wants a wedding website.
4.You’ll love the convenience (and won’t need to look anywhere else!)
Using a website builder is like going to a one-stop shop or to a mall, where everything you need is right there with no need to go anywhere else. It’s the most convenient way of saving time, effort, and money when creating your own stunning wedding website.
It also means you don’t have to worry about things like hosting and domains (essentially the digital space where your website lives and the address of how to find it) as the platform will take care of this for you. It’s all part of the service.
When time and money are at a premium, it makes no sense at all to saddle yourself with the extra costs and commitments associated with hiring someone to build a website for you – so why not build it yourself?
If you’re still uncertain about using a website builder for your wedding, it’s worth asking yourself:
“Why go anywhere else when I can design, publish, host and manage my website all from a single place?”
5.You’ll quickly find they’ve got an app for that
Want to send e-invitations? Maybe you want to show-off your registry wish-list? Or maybe you’d love the convenience of managing guest RSVPs in a single platform?
Well thankfully, modern website builders typically have app stores or marketplaces – much like your smartphone does – where you can find useful plugins for your website.
You can add these apps with just a few simple clicks, so if your guests need guidance then add a map app! If you want to take menu choices through your website just add a form app to record responses.
Using apps smartly can really save you huge amounts of time and effort you’d otherwise spend managing wedding logistics.
THE 5 BEST WEDDING WEBSITE BUILDERS
There are two types of wedding website builders for you to consider: all-round website builders and wedding-specific website builders.
Wedding-specific website builders are platforms that help you create one type of website only – wedding websites.
This can be handy for couples that need a guiding hand as these platforms provide the core ingredients that you might need, such as wedding-specific templates, registry integrations, and apps that can help you manage guests, logistics and more.
However, you’ll often find that the actual website building process on these platforms is much more limited than the drag ‘n’ drop freedom you’d get with an all-round website builder.
All-round website builders are a great choice if you’re after a more powerful and versatile editing experience.
You’ll find that they have a smaller selection of wedding-specific templates and apps, but instead offer a huge variety of fully-editable templates, themes and apps that cater for a more varied market and enable you to create a stunning wedding website.
This means that nine times out of ten you can find the feature – or an equivalent – available (for example, at the time of writing the Wix App Store has 7 RSVP apps available to take the hassle out of guest management for you!).
So which type of wedding website builder should you opt for?
To save yourself a lot of time and effort researching and weighing up different platforms, use our list below of the best website builders to point you in the right direction.
1) Wix (110+ million websites)
Wix is an easy-to-use and versatile website builder. We recommend it as our number one wedding website builder because it is the easiest to pick up and use. You don’t need to spend time getting to grip with Wix because it’s intuitive drag & drop editor means that when designing your site, what you see is what you will get!
Add to this a mobile editor to keep things looking sharp on your guests’ smartphones and Wix can be a real time saver for busy couples who have got bigger things to worry about before the big day.
Wix makes it easy to create a beautiful wedding website that will wow your guests in no time.
One of the best things about Wix is the huge variety of professionally-designed templates available. There are over 500 templates to choose from, all of which you can use as a base-point and then tweak and amend to your heart’s content.
And if you find yourself struggling to pick out the right template, Wix has over 20 wedding-specific templates that are the ideal jumping off point for your own wedding website.
Adding extra features to your site couldn’t be easier either as there are hundreds of apps and plugins available in the Wix App Market. Whether you want to add photo albums to share memories of the happy day, add a countdown to the nuptials or even keep guests abreast of the weather forecast for the day – Wix has it all.
You can even send e-invites and receive RSVPs directly from your wedding website with Wix – imagine how much time, money and effort that could save you! It can even make organisation much simpler as everything will be stored in the back-end of your Wix account.
Wix plans start from free, but we recommend considering a paid premium plan for your wedding website. This will not only allow you to use your own custom website address (e.g. www.johnandemilywedding.com!!) but also will grant you access to a much wider pool of templates, apps and plugins to really make your website stand out.
2) Squarespace (1+ million websites)
Squarespace is a design focused website builder known for creating stunning websites. We are big fans of Squarespace here at WBE because no other website builder can help you create a wedding website that looks as polished and professional – without needing to know how to code!
While the choice and variety of templates is not as wide as Wix’s, Squarespace focuses very much on helping you create the most beautiful site you can. Each and every template is clean and crisp, eye-catching yet easy to navigate, and also mobile-responsive – perfect for a wedding website that guests may need to check while travelling.
Squarespace offers a choice of 6 beautiful wedding specific templates that vary between sparse, minimal designs and busy, image-rich templates. Each of these templates can be tweaked in the editor so that you can create the wedding website of your dreams.
There is a real emphasis on showcasing photos and videos, which makes it a great choice of builder to visually tell the story of how you and your partner met and showcase photos from the special day itself.
One of the more stressful parts of any wedding is sorting out your registry. It can be a real nightmare to organize, right?
Thankfully, Squarespace has got you covered by making it easy to integrate a registry directly to your site thanks to the wedding-registry app ‘Zola’ (which helpfully highlights gift ideas on your website).
This makes it easy for your guests to browse your wish list without even leaving your site. And if you’ve opted for a honeymoon donation system? It’s also easy to accept donations too!
You’ll need a premium plan to access these wedding-focused features, but I think you’ll agree that Squarespace’s wedding integrations can (and will) lift a huge weight off your shoulders, freeing you up to focus on more important matters while making life as easy as possible for your guests.
3) Weebly (40+ million websites)
Weebly is probably the easiest website builder to use on this list. The editor is very user-friendly and minimalistic, which makes it an extremely time-saving platform on which to create your stunning wedding website.
The drag and drop functionality of the Weebly editor gives you the ability to take one of Weebly’s many templates and really make it your own. Honestly, it couldn’t be easier to add and arrange text and images, or even add an RSVP form for guests to complete and let you know they are coming.
Weebly’s ease of use and simple user interface means that it can be a real time and money-saver for busy couples who want a professional-looking site without the professional-looking price!
While Weebly might not showcase its wedding templates quite as well as Wix and Squarespace do, that’s not to say they don’t have a decent selection available to you – including mobile responsive designs, which are always handy.
Grouped under ‘Event’s rather than a wedding-specific section, Weebly’s marriage-focused templates are clean one-page designs that helpfully break up the page into multiple sections.
This can be handy for including different – but essential – information for guests, such as a ‘nearby accommodation’ or a ‘how to get to the venue’ section, both of which are easy to add with Weebly apps.
After all, your wedding website is as much for your guests as it is for you! The more you can cover of the day’s logistics and plans in one place, the easier it will be for your guests to enjoy your day with you.
The Weebly app center is a great place to have a poke around and find some cool – and useful- plugins for your wedding website. Whether you want to include a map to show directions, add a guestbook that your guests can comment on, or even integrate the site with your social media accounts and make everyone feel involved, Weebly has you covered.
The choice is pretty big, so it’s definitely worth poking around to find out just how many time-saving features you can add to your site.
Weebly offers free plans, but this will prevent you from using a custom website address and also restrict your access to certain apps, so it’s worth looking into premium options.
As an added bonus, for the price of a weekly cup of takeaway coffee your website will be hosted for a minimum of a year, so that you, your partner, friends, family and guests can revisit and enjoy memories of your special day time and again!
4) The Knot
The Knot is United States’ number one port of call for wedding-related news and inspiration, so it’s unsurprising that the site offers its own free, dedicated wedding website builder too.
Yes, that’s right – free! And with no premium plans to speak of, this means you get full access to everything The Knot has to offer from the get go, which can be very handy for those on a budget.
It can pay to be wary of free platforms sometimes and The Knot’s website building platform might set off a few alarm bells as it’s much more ‘paint by numbers’ than Wix, Weebly ,etc. Whereas the all-rounder editors give you a huge degree of creative freedom, The Knot’s editor is more like a dashboard merged with an editor.
Although this dashboard-style editor is clean and very easy to use, the knock on effect is that you need to keep previewing your website in order to see what it looks like! So while you’ll be able to navigate your way around and start building your wedding website easily enough, it’s not as straightforward as the ‘what you see is what you get’ editing process of all-round builders.
Despite this, I still consider The Knot to be one of the best wedding website builders around.
This is due in part to the way the site holds your hand, focuses you and then helpfully guides you through the entire website-building process.
In fact, this is one area where The Knot shows its real value to you – the onboard expertise. The resources are rich: a huge selection of wedding themes to choose from, registry integration with 25+ major retailers, easy photo album creation, on-the-day logistics sections. It’s got it all.
This can be very useful as it means The Knot almost acts like a checklist for your wedding website!
Ironically, this laser-focus can leave The Knot feeling a little restrictive at times because it simply doesn’t offer you the opportunity to think outside the box – there is no app store; there are no drastically different template designs, and there is no drag ‘n’ drop function in the editor. But despite this, it’ll still help you to make a very good wedding website.
The great thing about The Knot is that it doubles as a wedding planner site. So if you like the site content but not the editor, there’s no reason why you can’t just use it alongside, or as inspiration for, one of the more powerful all-round website builders.
5) Appy Couple
Appy Couple is a leading wedding website builder that focuses on making your site look as great as possible. One of the platform’s more innovative features is that it also provides you with a personalised wedding app that friends and family can download and use for directions, information and documenting the day itself – a great way to save on a photographer!
This platform doesn’t offer free plans and one of the drawbacks to Appy Couple is the fact that you need to sign up for a paid account immediately, even before you’ve designed your site, seen the editor or really figured out what’s available to you.
This might prove a bit of a turn off as it can feel as you’re not quite sure what you’re paying for, whereas all-round builders like Wix and Squarespace at least offer you a free trial period to test things out.
Still, if you’re willing to take the plunge – and it’s worth noting that it is a one-off payment only, no monthly costs here – you’ll gain access to more than 500 wedding-themed designs for your website, app and digital stationary (e.g. invitations), a pool of tools to help you manage guests, photos and the day itself, and a functional editor.
The Appy Couple editor is straightforward enough and, like The Knot, it comes semi-populated with wedding-themed content that you can switch on or off depending on your needs. While this doesn’t give you total freedom to do as you please, the structure can be both helpful and time-saving as it keeps you focused on the task at hand.
All the essentials are covered by Appy Couple – and then some. You can save serious time by organizing your entire wedding through the platform, including managing guest RSVPs, helping to arrange travel and accommodation through targeted partnerships, as well as connecting guests to your registry for easy gift picking!
Thanks to the wealth of features, you’re going to end up spending a bit longer setting up your Appy Couple website than you might on other platforms. This isn’t ideal, but the fact you can manage the logistics of for a large proportion of your wedding from a single place makes Appy Couple a potentially vital tool in your wedding arsenal.
So, while not the cheapest nor the most warmly welcoming of platforms, Appy Couple is still a strong choice of wedding website builder thanks to its in-depth wedding planning knowledge (you can even save toasts onto the app!), high-end design and quality end product.
Joy is a free wedding website builder that was originally designed for the founder’s sister!
Despite being free, Joy is well-equipped to help you create a great wedding website. It even provides you with a phone app that guests can use to share photos, get venue directions, or call Uber after the reception!
Joy is a very easy to use wedding website builder.
It has all the design elements you need to create an attractive and practical wedding website. The editing process is very simple, so you’ll find Joy a real time-saver!
Joy is not quite as versatile as Wix – but it is a solid choice if you want your wedding website building process to be as straightforward as possible.
As a free platform, Joy is certainly more affordable than other wedding website builders on this list – but what’s the catch?
Well, the main drawback is the limited layout options – there’s currently only one. So if you don’t like the split screen design – half fixed-image / half scrolling content – then you’re out of luck.
You can tweak the theme style, colors, fonts and display photos though – just not the structure of the site itself.
Still, Joy covers the essentials so you won’t be caught short. Your wedding website will be mobile-friendly and comes equipped with a countdown + RSVP, room for your story, a ‘romantic’ Q&A about you and your partner, the schedule, and a reminder that you have an app!
It’s also possible to add a registry to your website by adding links to your preferred stores.
Joy is certainly a handy platform but it does have drawbacks.
You only get one template and the styling changes aren’t that different from what we’ve seen elsewhere (think floral, think patterns, etc). You also lack the creative freedom you get on platforms like Squarespace and Wix.
It’s also unnecessarily complicated to use a personal domain (or personal web address). If you want to use one, you’ll need to redirect your site back to Joy. The options you have are whether to mask the URL (and lose mobile friendliness) or not to mask the URL and make do with a ‘withjoy.com’ squeezed into your URL. Not ideal either way.
In our opinion, Joy is a good back up to try out if you don’t have the budget to commit to a more powerful and all-inclusive wedding website builder.
