What is a drag-and-drop website builder?

You might have seen the name before – after all, drag-and-drop website builders are the most popular type of website builders on the market. The name ‘drag-and-drop’ describes how the designing process on these platforms work – you drag elements like images, text boxes, and videos from a menu, then drop them onto your website.

Think that sounds easy? Well, you’d be right. Drag-and-drop website builders are the easiest platforms to use – with these builders, anyone can create something beautiful online, without having to code.

Benefits of a drag-and-drop website builder

  • Easy to use
  • Loads of creative freedom
  • No coding required
  • Set price plans
  • Good customer support

Drawbacks of drag-and-drop website builders

  • Limited customization
  • Prices can add up with apps
  • Restricted to built-in features

Best drag-and-drop website builders

The best drag-and-drop website builders are:

  • Wix – best overall drag-and-drop website builder
  • Weebly – best for small businesses
  • Squarespace – best design
  • Site123 – best live chat customer support
  • Strikingly – best value for money

  • 1&1 IONOS – best for white collar businesses

Now you know the best of the drag-and-drop bunch, but how do they compare against each other? They all have different strengths and weaknesses, so it’s good to know where their powers lie.

Topping the list, Wix lets anyone build a website because it’s so easy to use. Weebly is really simple, too, but has more scalable business tools, while Squarespace requires the most creative thought, making it slightly more tricky to navigate at first.

How do you choose from such an impressive range of platforms? There are some things to consider:

  • Ease of use
  • Pricing
  • Design flexibility
  • Tools and features
  • Customer support

Worried about committing to a plan then regretting it? Every platform we’ve listed offers a free plan or free trial, so you can test out each website builder at no cost.

Wix tix a lot of boxes in the website building world. It has the most intuitive drag-and-drop design on the market – Wix came first in our ‘customer score’ testing – letting you create an awesome website for almost any industry.

Boasting the best ecommerce functionality of any ‘generic’ website builder, it’s great for small businesses and portfolios, and for online stores selling a few products..

One of Wix’s best features is called Ascend. It’s the all-in-one marketing package, letting you create newsletters, craft social media posts, and design campaigns in one place. Better still, prices start from just $9 per month.

Speaking of costs, Wix is one of the better value platforms. It even has a free plan, but this means your site comes with Wix ads all over the page, and a rather unprofessional ‘.wix.com’ subdomain.

To remove the ads and sub domains, you’ll need to upgrade to one of the premium Wix plans, which range from $11 /month to $35 /month.

Weebly helps your business grow online, offering the best tools to scale your ecommerce store. It also provides the finest SEO (Search Engine Optimization) features of any website builder we tested, helping people find your website more easily.

Couple that with its ease of use, and it’s no wonder we’ve scored Weebly so highly on our list. It may be more tricky to use at first than Wix, but with its low prices, it’s great value for a basic website.

Like Wix, Weebly has a free plan, which also comes with a subdomain (.weebly.com). To remove these website blemishes, you can upgrade to a premium plan ranging from $4 /month to $46 /month.

They say looks aren’t everything, but with Squarespace, they’re certainly very important. It’s the best dressed platform on the proverbial red carpet, offering the most stunning templates within its wardrobe.

Squarespace is ideal for photography portfolios, and for ecommerce stores selling visually impressive products. Yes, it’ll take a bit more creative effort than other website builders, but it’s the closest you can get to a professionally designed website without turning to a web developer.

But that’s not to say Squarespace is all style over substance; in terms of features, it has real quality. You can build beautiful blogs, embed social feeds, and integrate ecommerce tools with ease.

This level of creative power comes at a reasonably high price, though, with plans ranging from $12 /month to $40 /month.

Website crashes might be common, but they’re still bad for your site’s reputation. In fact, 79% of people are less likely to purchase from a site again if the website performs poorly.

Fixing issues quickly is vital for any website to be successful in the long run –  fortunately, Site123 really does make fixing issues as easy as 1,2,3.

Its design-assisted approach makes building your website really easy, and it has a brilliant live chat whizz bot to quickly fix any problems, right there and then.

Site123 is best for blogs, personal websites and small businesses – while it can get you online quickly and easily, it lacks the features to help you grow. Also, you cannot change templates once you go live, so make sure you’re happy with your choice.

The pricing is based on a loyalty scheme-type format: the longer you sign up for, the more money you save. If you go for the Basic plan for 3 years, it’ll cost just $6.45 per month, saving you 62%.

With Strikingly, you can bowl over your visitors without breaking the bank. We’d say it’s something of a ‘best of the rest’ platform – you can easily build a nice website (with Strikingly ads on your page) at no cost, but it has a few limitations.

For starters, Strikingly can only create one-page websites, making it ideal for blogs. Overall, it’s rigid in terms of design, stemming your flow of creative juice by restricting what you can do with each template.

Strikingly may be the best value platform, but how much do the price plans cost? Unsurprisingly, they won’t set you back much, with plans ranging from $8 /month to $49 /month.

Jimdo Creator is a mixed bag. It’s easy to drag-and-drop elements, but tricky to customize them once you’ve done so. In other words, you lack real creative control.

On the plus side, Jimdo Creator offers the lowest price plan on which you can remove adverts, so your site can look professional for a rookie-level price. If you go for the Business plan ($20 /month) or higher, you’ll also benefit from unlimited storage, which can really help to grow your website.

Another positive it that Jimdo Creator comes with a free plan. However, our research found Jimdo to have poorly designed templates, with a limited choice overall. The picture is clear: Jimdo Creator is more of a quick fix, and somewhat ironically, not a platform for the creative industry.

Like Jimdo Creator, 1&1 IONOS is not one for the creatives. Aimed at the over 50s, it’s best suited to small corporate businesses, but not much else.

It has all the features you need to give your business a platform online – including maps, contact forms, and the ability to track emails – while its templates cover plenty of industries. However, the interface is dated, and you should avoid this builder if you want your site to be eye-catching.

There’s no free plan, but 1&1 IONOS does offer a non-ecommerce plan for just $1 /month. If you want to sell products, you can choose from three plans, ranging from $10 /month to $30 /month.

Best ecommerce drag-and-drop website builders

The best ecommerce drag-and-drop website builders are:

You’ve now been introduced to the best ecommerce drag-and-drop builders, but how do they compare? Shopify is the leader overall because it’s so easy to use, while BigCommerce suits bigger businesses with its scalable tools and range of built-in features.

Volusion and 3dcart don’t offer much in the way of design freedom or ease of use, but they pack a punch when it comes to data reports, analytics and inventory.

There are some considerations to make when choosing an ecommerce drag-and-drop website builder. These include:

  • Depth and quality of built-in features
  • Ease of use
  • Size of app market
  • Pricing
  • Template design

The leader of the pack, Shopify has all the qualities you’d expect from the best overall ecommerce platform. It has the most comprehensive range of features, and was designed specifically to help users build and grow an online store with ease.

Still not convinced? You should know it came first in both our ‘ease of use’ and ‘sales features’ testing, which, as you could guess, are two important attributes for a good ecommerce website builder.

Of course, no one’s perfect. Shopify is the only platform to enforce its own transaction fee should you not use its own payment gateway, and it doesn’t provide a free domain even for the first year.

However, the pros massively outweigh the cons – and if you aren’t sure, Shopify comes with a 14-day free trial. Afterwards, you’ll need to upgrade to one of the three price plans, costing $29 /month, $79 /month, and $299 /month.

BigCommerce was designed to help fast growing businesses, offering the best tools for scaling your ecommerce store into an empire. Best of all, these features all come in one package, so you don’t need to spend time searching and paying for apps.

With such power comes complexity, though. BigCommerce lost points in our user testing because it uses jargon and has a complicated interface, making it tricky to locate some features. BigCommerce is not for tech beginners.

So how much does this powerful platform cost? Following a 15-day free trial, you can pick from three price plans, costing $29.95 /month, $71.95 /month, and $224.95 /month. It also offers a quotable custom plan for even bigger companies.

Overall, BigCommerce is good value for money due to the impressive range of built-in benefits.

This one goes out to the data lovers. What Volusion sacrifices in creative freedom, it makes up for in analytics and inventory features. It provides brilliant data reports, and lets you integrate with numerous payment gateways – but that’s about it.

Volusion blends in with the crowd because it has no niche feature. It doesn’t support the sale of digital products, nor does it have any blogging features. Instead, the power of Volusion lies in its backend, letting you analyse and grow your online store more easily.

You can trial Volusion free of charge for 14 days. After this, you’ll need to upgrade to a paid plan ranging from $29 /month to $299/month (the highest plan supports online revenue of $500k+). Also, like BigCommerce, Volusion offers a custom plan which you’ll to request a quote for.

#4: 3dcart

Extensive backend

Like a shopping cart with broken wheels, 3dcart is frustrating to use, but does let you add some useful stuff. It has a really impressive backend, and comes with helpful SEO prompts to help your site rank higher on Google – but in terms of user experience, it’s terrible.

To make matters worse for the user, 3dcart has relatively expensive plans for what it provides. Prices range from $19 /month to $229 /month, which is similar to Shopify and BigCommerce, but 3dcart doesn’t come close to matching these ecommerce industry leaders in terms of functionality.

3dcart Pros3dcart Cons

#5: Big Cartel

The only platform that lets you sell for free

Why should you pick the platform at the bottom of the list? Despite its ranking, Big Cartel does have its place in the market – it’s the only platform on which you can sell products for free. It’s also ideal for small businesses that are happy to remain small.

However Big Cartel is last for a reason. Our user testing found it was the hardest builder to actually build an online store with, and it requires some coding knowledge to operate properly.

You’ll also need apps to maximise your store’s performance, while its poor themes and website features lack depth and quality.

ADI: An easier solution than drag-and-drop?

Many people think they don’t have the time to build an ecommerce store. If website builders aren’t quick enough for you, there’s an even faster way to get online – ADI (Artificial Design Intelligence).

What is ADI? Essentially, it’s a website building game changer. It uses artificial intelligence to build you a website, after you’ve answered a few questions about what type of website you want.

Wix has recently introduced Wix ADI, which you can choose to use when you first visit the Wix website. GoDaddy uses GoCentral, which like Wix ADI, creates a website in just a few moments. It’s worth noting you can customize an ADI creation before publishing it, but you’re limited in what you can edit.

What are the benefits of ADI? The answer is clear: it’s never been easier to build a website.

Best drag-and-drop website builders: Conclusion

Drag-and-drop builders are so popular because they’re so easy to use, and we’ve taken you through the benefits and drawbacks of each one. We haven’t forgotten the entrepreneurs among you, either, having also highlighted the best ecommerce drag-and-drop platforms.

Let’s quickly recap the 12 best builders below:

The best ecommerce drag-and-drop builders are:

As we said, drag-and-drop website builders are easy to use. But ADI has made creating a website as quick and easy as ordering your favorite pizza.

If you’re more concerned about spending money, rather than time, on building a website, then don’t forget that each platform either offers a free plan or a free trial. This means you can drag-and-drop your way online without spending a dime.
