If you haven’t seen Wix’s App Market – you’re in for a treat. In this Wix App Market review, we’re going to show you can improve your Wix website with really interesting applications / tools.

WHAT’S WIX APP MARKET?

Wix provides you with over 260 apps to integrate into your Wix website (see our full review of Wix here).  These apps include tools and services that extend Wix’s functionality to help you build a better, more function website.

Basically, what this means is that there are certain tools that Wix does not provide you as part of their core services, so to fill this need / void, Wix provides you with 1-click, hassle-free installation of tools provided by external services providers.

Most website builders do not offer app markets for their users, which is why this makes Wix even more interesting.

Also, an average of 45,000 apps are being installed on a daily basis into websites built with Wix – that’s about 15 million app installations per year!  This just goes to show how helpful Wix’s apps are to users – and can be to you as well.

This is just something to keep in mind if you are still deciding on which website builder to use.

Serving the Wix website owners is our number one priority. Our goal is to offer a wide choice of apps that provide the popular and niche features Wix users have been asking for or that address current and future market trends. – Avishai Abrahami, Wix CEO & Founder

WHAT SORT OF APPS DOES WIX OFFER?

These apps include useful tools such as shopping carts (by Shopify), live chat widgets (by Rumble Talk and LiveChat) and many other functional services including marketing tools (email newsletter, lead / traffic generation, social contests, coupons), social widgets (forums, comment boxes, all the major social networks) and other tools such as online reservation tools, contact form builders, appointment booking, and schedulers.

These external apps can be bolted on to your Wix website so to improve how you serve your visitors and customers.  This is especially helpful to you if you are running a business to help you further engage your visitors (through surveys, live chats, coupons, social interaction, comment boxes) or even selling them products (using Shopify’s powerful e-commerce tools that offerk more than 65 payment gateways vs Wix’s standard PayPal and Google Checkout).

WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT WIX’S APP MARKET?

In addition to adding more functions to your website, Wix has made it extremely simple for you to add these Apps to your website.

Typically, if you were building a website and wanted to add some external tools / widgets, you will have to download these tools, follow what is usually fairly confusing and technical instructions to install these tools.  You just know you’re mostly not going to get it set up and working properly on the first try, so you’ll have to find the troubleshooting section or email the support team.  That’s frustrating.

Wix basically removes all these frustrations by fully integrating all 260 apps that they offer – making them all 1-click installs and ready to be used by you in very little time.  They’ve done the integration work for you already, so you can focus on other more important things.

Here’s a video from Wix that quickly shows you how it all works:

You can see how easy it is to start adding these Apps to add more functions to your Wix website.

AWESOME HELP FROM WIX AS USUAL

As mentioned in our full review of Wix, one of the best parts of using Wix is their helpful / support (they call it the Wix Learning Center).  Wix has one of the best help / support knowledgebase we’ve seen amongst all the website builders, as they include text, pictures, and videos in their help guides.

The most helpful part is that you can easily and conveniently access help articles almost everywhere when you are building your website.

This is no different for their Apps market.  Wix has included step-by-step instructions on how to integrate and set up these Apps on your website.

ARE ALL THE APPS FREE?

A lot of the Apps that you find in the Wix App Market are free, and some of them have them also offer you premium versions for a fee so you can access even more functions from the App providers.

For the Apps that have premium versions, what you can do is test their free versions first to see if you like what you see.  If you do, you have the option to upgrade.

If you don’t want to upgrade, there is no time limit as to how long you can use the free versions – so you can keep using these Apps for as long as you want.

The only App that we saw that has a time limit is Shopify (shopping cart), which has a 30-day trial before you need to start paying.

UPGRADING APPS AND SAVING MONEY

When we were looking around the premium versions of the Apps, we observed that for some Apps (not all of them), if you upgrade to their premium versions through Wix, the monthly fee is lower than what you would normally pay for the same App provider outside of Wix.

For instance, Rumble Talk (a live chat tool) charges their users $12.50 per month for their Starter Plan.

Wix Apps Market Review

With Wix, you can get the same plan for $9.99 per month.

Another example is Shopify – based on their website they normally only offer a 14-day trial for their visitors. With Wix, you get a full 30-day trial and the monthly fee (if you choose to upgrade) is cheaper than if you were to use Shopify outside of Wix.

Shopify Premium Plan

This is most likely because with Shopify, they give you a full website / storefront whereas with Wix, you are already using Wix as your website builder.

While it’s not always cheaper to use these Apps with Wix, we just wanted to bring this to your attention as it’s just something you want to keep an eye out for because they could be a better deal for you.

But even if you were paying the same fee to use the premium version of the App as if you got the App outside of Wix, the fact that Wix has fully integrated the App into its website builder, making it simple and headache-free for you to install and start using the tool without wasting time, is totally worth its value.

CONCLUSION – WIX APPS REVIEW

One of the drawbacks of using website builders versus an open source CMS (content management system) like WordPress is that website builders tend to have fewer options and flexibility when it comes to integrating external Apps or widgets.

This I why a lot of people (who don’t mind a steeper learning curve) decide to use WordPress since there are a lot of plugins / apps / widgets that are built for it.

Wix has taken a big step to building up their Apps Market so you can also use a lot of these tools from external services provider, to add more functionality to your Wix website.  Further, Wix has fully integrated these tools into their website builder, along with good help / support articles (as usual), makes it really quick and easy for you to start using these Apps – No need to mess around with installation and troubleshooting.

In our view, we’re excited to see how Wix is improving their range of tools by incorporating external Apps by other service providers.  We’re also looking forward to seeing more Apps being added into their market in the future.  It just makes it so much easier for Wix users to expand and grow their websites.

This is something to really think about if you are still deciding on whether to try Wix (see our full review of Wix here).

      Hi John,

Wix does allow you to build a blog, and has partnered up with Google Business Apps to manage emails.

You can always just visit Wix’s support center and search for specific features.

any chance WIX will be adding an app to allow website to offer individual password protected logins rather than just one member login for all to use?

      Hi Igrant,

Wix has a free “Member Login” app that you can bolt on to your Wix website. Each member that signs up can have his/her own unique password to login to the membership area.

Any advice on how to make that a ‘paid” membership site? Wix’s suggested workaround is collecting payment via a paypal button before granting access to content but that is very labor intensive.

          Hi Traci,

Yeah that’s a bit of work. Take a look at Sentry Login, which is an independent membership plugin that can be integrated with Wix. With Sentry, you can create a paid membership system.

I haven’t used them before, so can’t give you my thoughts on how well they work. But it’s an option for you to explore!

(Also, an average of 42,000 apps are being installed on a daily basis into websites built with Wix – that’s about 15 million app installations per year! This just goes to show how helpful Wix’s apps are to users – and can be to you as well.)

Can you please provide where you’re getting this information from? Wix once supply many apps inside of the Wix App Sore. But, that number went down. And, 80% Wix Apps have bad reviews or 3 stars and less.

So, if you’re suggesting outside of Wix App Store an average of 42,00 apps being installed on a daily basis inside of Wix, please share from where and whom.

I love Wix, but many apps provided by 3rd party and built by Wix within the Wix apps store lack function and many don’t work as advertised. Also, Wix apps store does not provide much for tablet and mobile devices. This is a shame. 67% of end users use mobile devices to surf, social network, emails, and make purchases, desktop computers is a dying breed. Even with the New Wix Editor Tools 2015 is not for mobile devices, but only for the desktop. Any desktop design effects will not display on a mobile devices. The same is true for most of Wix Apps. Fact, there is no design control for tablets and very little for smartphones too.

Best web editors for designers with a true drag and drop, like Wix, but having more of the ability to design in all layouts from desktop, tablets, and smartphone view are Adobe Muse or Webydo. The only two web editors that allows designers to design a website without limitation to only one type of devices, for now.

      Hi Koko,

The information is readily available if you look at their public reports. Wix is a publicly traded company, so in their investors presentation they disclose all these stats. We won’t disclose any information without being able to back them!

In terms of Apps in general, everybody is going to have their own experiences / opinions about them. For instance, even for WordPress plugins, some users will find them helpful, and some will find them not helpful at all. So it’s a hit and miss sort of thing and it’s all part of the process of continuously improving upon your website.

But yes, I’d agree in general that all apps could be improved! Just like anything else in life : )

Thank you for this helpful article. I’m leaning towards Wix to build my next website. However, I’m heavily relying on future advertisers for my revenue stream. Can you tell me how I can place advertisements on Wix DIY websites?

      Hi Jael,

If you are using Google Adsense, you can apply the Adsense app from Wix’s app market.

If you are placing other forms of advertisements, either the advertiser should provide you with some sort of HTML embed code which you can place on your Wix site using their HTML element, or you can just insert an ad image, and hyperlink it using some sort of unique tracking link that your advertiser should provide you.
